Before changing an alert setting
Make adjustments while the truck is safely parked, not while driving. A setting may be on the center display, on the steering wheel, or available only if the relevant equipment is installed. There is not one master control that adjusts every driver-assistance alert.

- Use the descriptions shown on the display to identify the feature you intend to change. Similar names can refer to different functions—for example, a forward-collision warning is not the same thing as automatic braking.
- If a setting or button described here is missing, check the Owner’s Manual for your model year and equipment rather than assuming the feature is hidden or malfunctioning.
- Keep driving attentively after changing a setting. GMC says the driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times.
You do not need to buy an accessory to change these built-in settings. The available controls depend on the Sierra’s equipment and software configuration. If a menu is absent, first establish whether the truck has the feature; do not assume a product or service purchase will add it.

Where the controls are
For most menu-based adjustments, open Settings on the center display, choose Vehicle, and then look for Collision/Detection Systems or entries for specific safety features. GMC describes this as a general route, not a guaranteed menu path for every Sierra. The organization and labels can differ across model years, trims and equipment.

Some adjustments are not in that menu. Forward Collision Alert timing may be selected with a steering-wheel control, and Lane Keep Assist uses its own steering-wheel button. Lane Change Alert is described in GMC’s support information as an option in the infotainment system’s Vehicle Personalization menu. For traffic-sign settings, GMC gives the path Settings > Display > Instrument Cluster > Traffic Sign Recognition, if that feature is fitted.
A useful way to avoid changing the wrong control is to identify the job you want done before opening a menu. Are you trying to change when a forward-collision warning sounds, change a beep to a seat pulse, switch a lane feature off, or hide a traffic-sign display or chime? Those are distinct adjustments. Read the on-screen description and confirm the selected state after each change instead of treating similarly named safety settings as interchangeable.
| Feature | Where to look | What the setting changes |
|---|---|---|
| Forward Collision Alert | Applicable steering-wheel control, if equipped | Alert timing: Far, Medium or Near |
| Safety Alert Seat or alert type | Vehicle settings, if the seat and options are installed | Compatible beeps or seat pulses |
| Lane Keep Assist | Button showing a vehicle between lane markings | Turns Lane Keep Assist on or off |
| Lane Change Alert | Vehicle Personalization menu | Turns the alert feature on or off |
| Traffic Sign Recognition | Settings > Display > Instrument Cluster > Traffic Sign Recognition, if equipped | Traffic-sign display or related chime options shown for the vehicle |
Adjust Forward Collision Alert timing
On equipped Sierra models, Forward Collision Alert can offer Far, Medium or Near timing through the applicable steering-wheel control. Use the control to view or cycle through the available choices, and check the display for the selected setting. The available options and the exact control may vary, so consult the truck’s manual if the control is not apparent.

The choices change when the alert is timed in relation to a vehicle ahead; they do not change the basic purpose of the feature. GMC says timing depends on distance, vehicle speeds and other factors, and that the range may not be suitable for every driving condition. A driver should not treat any one selection as a guaranteed safe following distance or as a substitute for braking.
These choices are alert-timing preferences, not a promise that the system will warn at a fixed distance in every situation. The vehicle’s speed, the distance to another vehicle and other factors affect timing. If one choice seems too early or too late for your preference, make an adjustment only while parked and then confirm the selection shown by the truck. Continue to leave enough following distance and be prepared to respond yourself.
GMC states: “Forward Collision Alert only provides alerts; so you can quickly take action.” The alert itself does not apply throttle or braking. Automatic Emergency Braking, when fitted, is a separate capability with its own status and settings. Do not infer from a Forward Collision Alert selection that automatic braking has been enabled, disabled or adjusted.
What can affect the ability of Forward Collision Alert to perform as expected?
GMC identifies distance, vehicle speeds and other factors as relevant to alert timing, and cautions that the selected range may not fit every driving condition. A warning is not guaranteed in every circumstance. Treat the setting as a preference for alert timing—not as a way to control vehicle braking or to replace your own attention. For the limits that apply to your Sierra, check its Owner’s Manual.
Choose beeps or seat pulses
If your Sierra has the Safety Alert Seat, the vehicle settings may provide an Alert Type or similarly named option. Depending on equipment, you may be able to choose audible beeps or seat pulses for compatible alerts. Open the relevant safety feature’s description in the Vehicle settings to see which alert types are available in your truck.

Seat pulses replace compatible beeps; they are not an additional intensity level. GMC says pulse intensity is not adjustable. If you find the pulses difficult to detect, GMC advises switching to beeps where that option is available. The menu may not appear if the vehicle does not have the Safety Alert Seat or does not support that choice.
This choice changes how a compatible alert is presented, not whether the underlying driver-assistance system is available. Do not expect the setting to change every warning in the truck. If you choose pulses but cannot reliably notice them, use beeps if the menu offers that alternative. Since the pulse intensity cannot be raised or lowered, repeated searching for an intensity slider will not adjust it.
Turn Lane Keep Assist on or off
Use the steering-wheel button marked with a vehicle between lane markings to toggle Lane Keep Assist. Check the instrument display for the system’s status or indicator, since a button press may change the feature’s state rather than open a customization menu.
Lane Keep Assist can provide a brief steering nudge and a lane-departure alert in applicable circumstances. It is not continuous steering: GMC states, “It’s important to remember that even though this feature provides brief steering nudges, it doesn’t continuously steer your vehicle.” Keep your hands and attention engaged, and steer the truck yourself.
Why might it not warn at a lane marker?
GMC says Lane Keep Assist may suppress a warning when the system detects that the driver appears to be intentionally changing lanes. That behavior means a missing warning at a particular lane crossing does not by itself establish that the feature is switched off or defective. Road and operating conditions also matter to how driver-assistance features perform. For the exact operating limits and activation conditions on your model year, consult its Owner’s Manual.
Do not interpret a steering nudge as an instruction to let go of the wheel. The feature offers brief assistance and does not continuously steer. Likewise, do not diagnose the feature solely from one lane crossing: an apparent intentional lane change can suppress a warning, and the system’s operating conditions matter. Keep control of the truck and use the manual to understand the conditions specific to your vehicle.
Turn Lane Change Alert on or off
Look in the infotainment system’s Vehicle Personalization menu for Lane Change Alert or the relevant side-zone alert setting. GMC describes this feature as providing side-mirror indicators to alert the driver; it does not steer or brake. Its on/off selection persists after the truck is restarted.

GMC’s support guidance frames a related question as: “Can I turn off the Lane Change Alert but keep the Side Blind Zone Alert feature on?” Do not assume that separate labels necessarily provide independent controls on every Sierra. Open the menu and read the feature descriptions shown for your specific vehicle; if the desired combination is not offered, the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual is the authority on its available configuration.

Because the on/off selection persists after restart, cycling the ignition is not a way to restore the setting to its previous state. Verify the selected state in Vehicle Personalization if you want to change it again. The mirror indicators are alerts only: they do not move the truck, apply the brakes or make a lane change safe on their own.
Adjust traffic-sign display or chimes
If equipped with Traffic Sign Recognition, look under Settings > Display > Instrument Cluster > Traffic Sign Recognition. GMC describes this feature as designed for posted speed limits. Depending on the truck’s configuration, the menu may offer a choice affecting the sign display or related chimes; use only the options that actually appear on the display.
Availability may depend on the vehicle and, according to GMC, may require an eligible OnStar plan and navigation data. If you do not want to see traffic-sign alerts, use the available setting in that menu if your Sierra provides one. Do not assume a single control will silence other driver-assistance alerts, because these features have their own settings.
The sign-related menu is separate from the general collision and detection settings route, so look under Display and Instrument Cluster if Traffic Sign Recognition is present. If the setting does not appear, check whether the feature is supported and whether its stated requirements apply to your configuration. The sign display is not a substitute for observing posted signs yourself.
What should I do if I don’t want to see traffic sign alerts?
Open the Traffic Sign Recognition options at the path above, if equipped, and choose only from the display or chime options available on your truck. GMC notes that the feature may require an eligible OnStar plan and navigation data. This menu concerns traffic-sign recognition; it should not be assumed to silence unrelated driver-assistance alerts.
What to check when a control or alert is missing
The feature is not listed
First confirm that the truck is equipped with the feature. GMC notes that equipment and menu options vary by vehicle. Check the Owner’s Manual for the model year and trim, then compare its description with the names shown under Vehicle settings. A general support menu path cannot establish that a particular vehicle has the hardware or option.
The menu label differs
Look for the individual feature name or for a broader collision or detection category rather than relying on one exact submenu label. GMC’s general route is Settings > Vehicle, but the submenu can vary. Follow the on-screen description before changing a control so you do not mistake an alert-type preference for a system on/off setting.

These features are conditional driver aids, not guarantees that a warning will be issued in every situation. Forward Collision Alert timing depends on distance, vehicle speeds and other factors. Lane Keep Assist may suppress a warning for an apparent intentional lane change. Visibility, traffic, surroundings and road conditions can affect system performance. Consult the truck-specific manual for its stated limits rather than relying on a warning to prevent a collision.

A change does not seem to affect the feature you expected
Verify which feature was selected and whether the adjustment changes timing, alert type or system availability. Forward Collision Alert’s timing choice, Safety Alert Seat’s choice of beeps or pulses, and Lane Keep Assist’s on/off button do different jobs. In particular, changing a warning preference does not amount to changing Automatic Emergency Braking.
The steering-wheel control is unclear
Do not guess based on a similar-looking icon or keep pressing controls while driving. Park, check the Owner’s Manual illustration for your model year, and identify the applicable control before using it. This matters especially for Forward Collision Alert, whose Far, Medium and Near choices may be selected at the steering wheel rather than in the center-display menu.
You want one alert changed but not another
Change only the feature that matches the alert you want to adjust. The center-display route is a starting point, not a universal switch; an alert-type preference can change beeps to seat pulses, while other controls adjust timing or turn a particular feature on or off. After making one change, confirm its displayed status before moving on to another setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse the manual for the exact Sierra configuration
GMC’s general guidance is useful for locating common controls, but it cannot identify every menu variation or limitation across Sierra 1500 model years and trims. The manual for your specific truck is the reference for its equipment, control behavior and operating conditions. A manual for a different year should not be treated as proof of the current layout: even a 2021 Sierra 1500 manual applies to that year rather than to every later model.
When changing a setting, make one adjustment at a time while parked, then confirm the displayed state. If the manual describes a different control or the expected option is absent, use the vehicle-specific instructions rather than repeatedly searching for a label that may not exist on your truck.
A safe adjustment routine
- Park the Sierra before opening settings or using steering-wheel controls to change a preference.
- Identify the exact alert or feature you want to adjust, using its displayed description or the Owner’s Manual.
- Use the control location applicable to that feature: Vehicle settings, the specific steering-wheel control, Vehicle Personalization, or the Traffic Sign Recognition display menu.
- Make one change, then confirm the selected state on the display or instrument cluster where applicable.
- On the road, continue steering, braking and monitoring traffic yourself; these alerts and brief assistance features do not replace driver attention.
This routine helps separate an alert preference from a system’s operation. If the available menu does not offer the combination or adjustment you want, do not assume another setting controls it. The vehicle’s manual defines the equipment and choices for that Sierra.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are driver-assistance alert settings in a GMC Sierra 1500?
Start with Settings > Vehicle on the center display, then look for Collision/Detection Systems or individual safety and driver-assistance settings. Menus vary by model year, trim and equipment, so confirm the path in your Sierra’s Owner’s Manual.
Can I adjust Forward Collision Alert in the center display?
On equipped Sierra models, GMC describes Far, Medium and Near timing choices selected with the applicable steering-wheel control. The exact control and available choices may vary. Forward Collision Alert provides warnings; it does not apply throttle or braking.

What can affect the ability of Forward Collision Alert to perform as expected?
GMC says alert timing depends on distance, vehicle speeds and other factors, and the range may not suit every driving condition. A warning is not guaranteed in every situation. Keep a safe following distance and remain ready to act.
Can I make the Safety Alert Seat pulses stronger?
No. GMC says pulse intensity is not adjustable. If the pulses are difficult to detect, switch to beeps if that option is available for your Sierra. The choice may only appear on vehicles equipped to support it.
Why doesn’t the system warn me when I cross the lane marker?
Lane Keep Assist may suppress a warning when it detects what appears to be an intentional lane change. Road and operating conditions also matter. The system’s brief steering nudge does not mean it continuously steers, so remain attentive and steer the truck yourself.
Can I turn off Lane Change Alert but keep Side Blind Zone Alert on?
Do not assume the controls are independent on every Sierra. Review the Vehicle Personalization menu and the feature descriptions shown for your truck. If the desired combination is not offered, use the model-specific Owner’s Manual to confirm its configuration.
What should I do if I don’t want to see traffic sign alerts?
If equipped, open Settings > Display > Instrument Cluster > Traffic Sign Recognition and use the display or chime choices available there. GMC notes the feature may require an eligible OnStar plan and navigation data. This does not necessarily affect other alerts.
Will changing an alert setting enable or disable Automatic Emergency Braking?
No. Forward Collision Alert is an alert feature; Automatic Emergency Braking, if fitted, is a separate capability with its own status and settings. Do not treat a warning-timing selection as a braking adjustment.
The Bottom Line
Park first, identify the specific alert, and use its own menu or steering-wheel control; there is no single setting for every Sierra 1500 driver-assistance warning. Because controls and equipment vary by model year and trim, confirm choices in your truck’s Owner’s Manual. Alerts and brief steering nudges do not replace attentive driving, steering or braking.
