“Two Mercedes in one” meant two separate vehicles: a Variomobil Perfect 1200 Platinum built on a Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis, with a rear garage shown carrying a Mercedes-AMG GT. The sports car was an extra, not part of the motorhome’s quoted starting price. The widely repeated $1.8-million figure is a rounded 2020 headline; the report put the displayed, heavily optioned motorhome above €1.45 million.
What the “two Mercedes” headline means
The motorhome was the Variomobil Perfect 1200 Platinum, described in a 2020 New Atlas feature as the flagship of Variomobil’s Perfect range. Its Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis supplied the commercial-vehicle base; the second Mercedes was the AMG GT pictured in the large rear garage. The report says the garage was designed for cars such as a Porsche 911 and could also accommodate smaller cars such as a Mini Cooper. It does not say that the carried car came with the motorhome.
New Atlas’s September 10, 2020 feature is the source for the vehicle details and historical prices below. It describes a show vehicle and manufacturer-attributed specifications, not a current inventory listing or an independent road test.
Size, chassis and powertrain
The report puts the Perfect 1200 Platinum at 39 ft (12 m) long, with three axles, a gross vehicle weight rating of 26 tonnes and three slide-outs. It lists a standard Actros 2453 with a 10.7 L diesel engine rated at 422 hp, and an optional Actros 2553 with a 12.8 L diesel rated at 523 hp.

The garage and the living space
The rear garage is what made the motorhome a practical pairing with a separate performance car: the report showed it holding an AMG GT and described space for other cars, including a Porsche 911 or, at smaller scale, a Mini Cooper. It also mentions an optional e-bike slide loader and charging station. The article does not provide garage dimensions or payload figures, so the examples do not establish that every car will fit or that any particular loaded configuration meets weight limits.

Solar charging, air conditioning, a washer/dryer and lithium batteries are identified as options, rather than equipment that should be assumed on every version. Three slide-outs were reported for the vehicle.
What the $1.8 million figure actually represented
New Atlas reported a starting price of €881,020 in 2020 and said the optioned show vehicle exceeded €1,450,000. The same article characterized the latter as about US$1.7 million at the time; the “$1.8 million” headline is a rounded historical framing, not a current list price. The AMG GT cost extra. These are dated report figures, not a present-day quote, and no current price or availability has been verified.

Is the Perfect 1200 Platinum available now?
The cited 2020 feature does not establish whether the model is still in production, what its current specification is, or whether it can currently be ordered. The reported prices, engine choices and equipment describe the vehicle and configurations covered at that time. A buyer would need a current written specification and quote from Variomobil or an authorized seller to confirm production status, equipment, vehicle weight and price.
