The U.S.-market 2025 Toyota 4Runner is a sixth-generation redesign built on Toyota’s truck platform, with two turbocharged powertrains, a broader nine-grade lineup and new choices aimed at comfort, off-roading and overlanding. Those changes expand what the 4Runner offers; Toyota’s announcements alone do not establish that it has changed the mid-size SUV segment as a whole.
What changed for 2025?
Toyota redesigned the 4Runner for its sixth generation, moving it to the TNGA-F global truck platform also used by the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. Toyota describes a boxed steel ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link coil rear suspension. These are platform and construction details, not independent evidence about ride quality or durability.
The new model keeps familiar 4Runner cues, including the roll-down rear window. Toyota also points to wrap-over quarter glass inspired by first- and second-generation models, and says the second-row tumble seats add cargo-floor versatility. Those design details preserve continuity while the underlying vehicle and cabin technology are updated. Toyota’s December 2024 launch announcement and its January 2025 overview describe the changes.
How do the powertrains differ?
Toyota offers two 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains, each paired with an eight-speed automatic. The i-FORCE is the standard setup on several grades; i-FORCE MAX adds a hybrid system and is standard on selected higher-specification grades.

Which grades suit which priorities?

Toyota’s equipment descriptions are launch-announcement details, not a guarantee that every item appears on every configuration or vehicle in dealer inventory. Verify the model-year specification for the exact grade and options you are considering. Toyota’s grade-by-grade launch release lists the announced equipment.
What drivetrain and off-road choices are available?
Toyota describes two-wheel drive, part-time four-wheel drive and full-time four-wheel drive versions across the range; availability depends on grade and powertrain. Toyota says all i-FORCE MAX grades come standard with four-wheel drive. Its launch materials identify full-time four-wheel drive and an electronic locking center differential on Limited and Platinum. Buyers should confirm the exact drivetrain on a particular vehicle rather than assume every grade can be ordered in every configuration.

The choice between TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro and Trailhunter is not simply a matter of selecting progressively higher numbers. Toyota presents the Off-Road grades with trail-focused equipment, TRD Pro with its own shocks and 33-inch tires, and Trailhunter with hardware for overlanding, including an onboard compressor and roof rack. The announcement establishes what Toyota says those grades include; it does not provide comparative independent performance testing.

For multimedia, Toyota describes an 8-inch display or an available 14-inch display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and an available 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster on certain grades. Screen and convenience equipment vary by grade, so check the vehicle’s specification rather than treating the larger displays as standard throughout the range. Toyota’s launch announcement details the safety and multimedia features.
What did Toyota announce for the 2025 price?
On December 10, 2024, Toyota announced a U.S. starting MSRP of $40,770, plus $1,450 for delivery processing and handling, and said dealer arrivals were expected in January 2025. That is the launch-era price, not a current quote. It does not establish today’s dealer pricing, incentives, taxes, fees or the price of a particular grade. Toyota’s dated announcement is the source for the original figure.

Does the redesign change the mid-size SUV game?
The redesign broadens the 4Runner’s own proposition: the lineup combines a turbo-only option with a higher-output hybrid, distinguishes comfort and trail-focused grades, and adds factory-built TRD Pro and overlanding-oriented Trailhunter versions. Its traditional roll-down rear window remains, while the new platform, updated displays and standard driver-assistance suite bring substantial changes elsewhere.
That supports a claim that Toyota has expanded the 4Runner’s choices, but not a verdict that it has changed the wider mid-size SUV market. The available Toyota announcements do not provide independent comparisons of rivals’ prices, fuel economy, ride, reliability or off-road performance. Those questions require current, like-for-like specifications and independent testing.
