NIO’s April 2024 range challenge recorded 1,070 km (665 miles) for a 2024 ET7 equipped with the company’s 150 kWh battery. Two other ET7s on separate routes covered 1,062 km and 1,046 km. These were manufacturer range-challenge results, not a controlled independent test or a promise of everyday range.
What happened in the April 2024 challenge?
NIO ran three 2024 ET7 sedans with 150 kWh packs on separate Chinese routes. CnEVPost reported the results on April 17, 2024: the Kunming–Zhanjiang car traveled 1,070 km, the Beijing–Hefei car traveled 1,062 km, and the Shanghai–Xiamen car traveled 1,046 km. The Kunming–Zhanjiang vehicle ran out of power at the end of its 1,070 km run. (CnEVPost)

The leading figure is notable, but the spread between routes is useful context: even within one company challenge, a single result does not describe every run. For the 1,070 km drive, NIO reported a maximum speed of 118 km/h as well as the 83.7 km/h average. The 15.9-hour total includes time beyond the 12.8 hours spent driving.
How should the 1,070 km result be interpreted?
It is a long-distance result from a company range challenge on a public route. It is not an independent, standardized comparison with other EVs. Route elevation, speed, temperature, vehicle load, energy use, driving time, and whether the car finished with reserve or depleted all affect how a distance figure should be read.

NIO’s ET7 page describes its displayed range estimate as simulated under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), and cautions that actual range can vary with weather, roads, topography, driving habits, occupants, and loading; it also says official filed figures prevail. CLTC and the April road challenge are different kinds of numbers, so the challenge distance should not be substituted for a CLTC estimate or treated as typical owner range. How does the April run compare with NIO’s earlier drive?
In a separate challenge on December 18, 2023, NIO said its founder, chairman, and CEO William Li drove an ET7 1,044 km, using 97% of the 150 kWh pack. The journey took more than 14 hours and ran from Shanghai to the outskirts of Xiamen. This earlier drive is not the April 2024 three-route test: the reported distance was similar, but the setup and ending condition differed. (NIO press release)

For comparisons between these runs—or with another EV test—check route and elevation, average and maximum speeds, temperature, vehicle load, energy used per distance, driving time versus total elapsed time, and whether the car stopped with a reserve or depleted. A distance number without those details can give a misleading impression of equivalence.
What does “semi-solid-state” mean for this battery?
NIO’s December 2023 release described the 150 kWh battery as a cell-to-pack design using pouch-format cells and reported cell energy density of up to 360 Wh/kg. That is a manufacturer-reported cell figure, not the energy density of the complete pack and not a range measurement. The release said the battery was compatible with NIO vehicles through NIO Power’s chargeable, upgradeable, and swappable system, with flexible upgrade options. (NIO press release)

That service model matters: the 150 kWh pack is presented as part of NIO’s battery system, rather than simply as a conventional standalone battery product that every ET7 owner necessarily owns. A CnEVPost report dated April 29, 2024 said trial operations were scheduled for May 1–31 and official operation for June 1, with daily rentals described and supply initially constrained; it also reported that the cells came from Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology. Those are historical availability and supplier details, not confirmation of present-day service terms. (CnEVPost)

NIO’s ET7 page says: “Equipped with a 150kWh ultralong-range battery pack, the ET7 is the only battery electric executive sedan that has achieved over 1,000 kilometers in a real-life range challenge.” That is NIO’s own claim, not an independently established ranking. The April figures establish what NIO reported for these three challenge runs; they do not establish that the ET7 is the longest-range EV in general driving or that drivers can expect to reproduce the challenge distances.
