The McLaren W1’s 4.0-litre MHP-8 V8 makes 928 PS, or 233 PS per litre, according to McLaren. The company calls that the highest output ever from a McLaren engine; the available specifications do not establish a worldwide V8 record. The W1’s headline 1,275 PS is the output of its complete hybrid powertrain, not the V8 alone. Ferrari’s F80 makes a useful comparison: its V6 is rated at 900 cv and 300 cv per litre, while Ferrari quotes 1,200 hp for the hybrid system.
What “most power-dense” means for the McLaren W1
McLaren identifies the MHP-8 as a 4.0-litre, 90-degree, twin-turbocharged V8. It rates the combustion engine at 928 PS, equivalent to 233 PS per litre, and describes that specific output as the highest ever from a McLaren engine. That is a manufacturer-specific record claim, not evidence that the W1 has the highest-output-per-litre production V8 across all makes and eras.
Keep the engine figure separate from the car’s total hybrid output. McLaren lists a 347 PS E-module and rates the complete hybrid powertrain at 1,275 PS and 1,340 Nm. Component ratings do not mean their independent peaks can necessarily be added in every operating condition. The W1 is rear-wheel drive. McLaren’s W1 specifications and its 6 October 2024 launch release give the company’s published figures.
McLaren W1 and Ferrari F80: published figures compared
The Ferrari F80 is a useful rival for context, but not a like-for-like V8 comparison: it uses a 120-degree V6, and Ferrari’s materials use their own published units and conventions. The values below are manufacturer specifications or claims, not independent measurements.

The W1 figures come from McLaren’s specifications; Ferrari’s figures are in its F80 technical data sheet and 17 October 2024 launch release. PS and cv are the metric horsepower labels used in the respective materials. Ferrari’s release states combined output in hp; those labels should be retained rather than silently converted into a false like-for-like comparison.
What the comparison does—and does not—show
Specific output favours the F80 on the published figures
Ferrari’s technical sheet gives the F80 V6 300 cv per litre, compared with McLaren’s 233 PS per litre for the W1 V8. Those are the figures as each manufacturer publishes them. They do not by themselves establish a universal engine ranking: the cars use different engine architectures, and the documentation does not provide a shared independent measurement or a consistently defined cross-market record survey.

Total power is not engine power
The W1’s 1,275 PS and the F80’s 1,200 hp are hybrid-system claims. They should not be substituted for either car’s combustion-engine output. Nor do these different unit labels, on their own, prove which system produces more power under a common measurement convention.
Weight, traction and performance need separate context
McLaren publishes the W1 at 1,399 kg in its “dry-lightest” configuration and gives a ratio of 911 PS per tonne. Ferrari lists the F80 at 1,525 kg dry and a ratio of 1.27 kg per cv. The terms and ratio formats differ, so these values are not a clean head-to-head weight-to-power test. Their traction layouts differ as well: the W1 is rear-wheel drive, while the F80’s hybrid system includes an electric front axle. McLaren’s acceleration figures are manufacturer claims; the cited Ferrari materials do not establish a matching acceleration result under the same conditions. None of this settles which car is quicker on a road or circuit.

Keep the W1 distinct from McLaren’s racing Hypercar
“McLaren Hypercar” can also refer to the company’s separate World Endurance Championship programme. McLaren Racing describes a planned top-class entry for 2027 powered by a twin-turbo V6. That is a racing programme, not the road-going W1 and its MHP-8 V8. Details are on McLaren Racing’s Hypercar Team page.
