The all-electric 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA has a two-speed transmission in its rear electric drive unit. Mercedes-Benz lists an 11:1 first gear and a 5:1 second gear for both the rear-wheel-drive CLA 250+ and the dual-motor CLA 350 4MATIC. The automaker says first gear supports quick acceleration and efficient city driving, while second gear is intended for high speeds.
What the two gear ratios mean
Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2025 quick reference guide for the 2026 CLA lists these ratios:

A ratio describes how the motor’s rotation is reduced through the gearing before it reaches the wheels. First gear’s higher numerical ratio is shorter gearing, which Mercedes-Benz associates with acceleration and city driving. The lower numerical ratio in second gear lets the electric drive turn more slowly relative to road speed than it would in first gear.
Where the transmission sits
The two-speed transmission is part of the rear electric drive unit, not a separate gearbox for each axle. Mercedes-Benz USA’s drivetrain material places it on the rear drive.

The CLA 250+ is rear-wheel drive. The CLA 350 4MATIC adds a front motor for dual-motor all-wheel drive, but the cited U.S. specifications identify the same two-speed transmission and the same ratios in the rear drive unit. They do not establish that the front motor has a matching two-speed transmission.
Why Mercedes-Benz uses two speeds
Mercedes-Benz presents the design as a way to combine dynamic performance with efficiency across different driving situations. The stated roles of the two gears reflect that trade-off: shorter gearing for acceleration and city use, and taller gearing for high speeds.

The published ratios and descriptions do not, by themselves, quantify an acceleration improvement, a range increase, or fuel-equivalent energy savings attributable to the transmission. The reviewed manufacturer material does not give a shift schedule or the speed at which the CLA changes gears.

The two-speed transmission is one element of the CLA’s broader electric drivetrain. Mercedes-Benz Germany describes the electric drive unit as achieving more than 93% efficiency. That figure applies to the drive unit, not to the transmission alone, and should not be read as a measured gearbox efficiency or a range benefit from the two-speed design.
