That is an attributed observation, not a Tesla announcement of a company-wide policy. Tesla’s own materials describe using existing locations for near-term fleet operations while developing dedicated infrastructure; a wireless-charging concept has also been shown, but its deployment is not established.
What happened at the Austin Supercharger?
Teslarati reported on October 5, 2026, that an observer saw ten driverless Tesla Robotaxis at an Austin Supercharger: one Cybercab and nine Model Ys. In the reported scene, a Tesla employee manually plugged in and repositioned the vehicles. So, for that observation, the answer to “who plugs them in?” is an employee.
Tesla has not confirmed that specific event in the sources available here. It should not be treated as proof that every Robotaxi is charged this way, or that the scene represents Tesla’s policy across locations.
How does the reported stopgap fit Tesla’s stated plans?
Near term: existing locations
In its 2025 Form 10-K, Tesla said it was focused on developing and optimizing dedicated Robotaxi infrastructure, including charging, cleaning and maintenance, security, teleoperations, and fleet management.

Tesla’s Q4 2025 update also said that, in the short term, charging, cleaning, and maintenance could be managed through its existing charging network, service centers, and sales and delivery locations. The company added that it would need more capacity as the service expands. That statement makes use of existing sites a plausible interim approach; it does not establish that the Austin incident was a formal operating plan.
Longer term: dedicated infrastructure
Tesla’s filing describes dedicated infrastructure as work in development, not a completed network. The company has also presented wireless charging as a Robotaxi concept: its October 2024 investor presentation included a slide titled “ROBOTAXI CHARGING – WIRELESS CHARGING REMOVES NEED FOR A HUMAN.” That establishes Tesla showed the concept; it does not establish that wireless equipment is operating at Austin sites or give a deployment date.

What the two approaches mean
| Approach | What is established | What it suggests—and what it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Existing locations with manual handling | Tesla said existing facilities could support near-term workstreams, and secondary reporting described an employee plugging in vehicles at one Austin site. The specific observation has not been confirmed by Tesla. | It can use facilities already available, but the reported scene involved human handling. One site does not establish a nationwide operating model. |
| Dedicated or wireless fleet infrastructure | Tesla says it is developing dedicated infrastructure and has shown wireless charging as a concept. | Dedicated capacity and wireless charging could reduce reliance on improvised or manual processes, but operational deployment and a transition schedule are not established. |
Does this show “scrappy DNA”?
“Scrappy DNA” is an interpretation of the reported scene, not a Tesla quote or a measured corporate trait. Manually charging vehicles at an existing Supercharger would be a practical workaround if the report is accurate. The available evidence does not show whether it is temporary, how often it happens, or whether it offers a lasting operational advantage.

Tesla’s Q2 2026 update reported more than 2,400 net new Supercharging stalls and 17% year-over-year network growth. Those are company-reported figures for Tesla’s overall network, not Robotaxi-specific capacity or data about Austin’s charging availability.
