Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), BMW Highway Assistant, Ford BlueCruise and GM Super Cruise are supervised driver assistance in the use cases described here: the driver must stay engaged. Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT is a restricted Level 3 system that can allow eyes-off activity while it is active within its approved conditions. The right comparison depends on where a system works, what it can do, and what the driver must still do—not its name.
At a glance: what each system does and where it works
| System | Operating scope | Driving tasks described by the manufacturer | Driver’s role | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) | Tesla describes use across a wider range of road scenarios, including residential and city streets, as well as highways. | Can attempt to follow a destination route, handle curves, intersections and turns, negotiate roundabouts, and enter or exit highways. | Remain fully attentive and intervene when needed. | Tesla warns that intervention may be needed in situations including construction zones, narrow roads with oncoming traffic, and complex intersections. Availability and behavior depend on vehicle configuration, hardware, software, market and build date. |
| BMW Highway Assistant | Controlled-access highways for vehicles equipped with the feature; hands-free use is listed up to 85 mph by BMW USA. | Highway assistance with hands-free operation on eligible roads. | Keep attention on traffic and intervene when needed; BMW says the driver retains full control and responsibility. | Do not assume that every BMW or every Driving Assistant Professional package version includes Highway Assistant. |
| Ford BlueCruise | Designated Blue Zone roads. | Hands-free highway assistance built on adaptive cruise control; applicable versions may provide lane centering, in-lane repositioning and lane changes. | Keep eyes on the road and be ready to take control. | Ford says it is not full self-driving. Features and availability vary by model, year and configuration. |
| GM Super Cruise | Compatible roads and specified conditions. | Can manage steering, acceleration and braking alongside adaptive cruise control; eligible vehicles can make automatic lane changes. | Monitor the vehicle with eyes on the road. | Road coverage, features and vehicle eligibility vary. Check the live compatibility information and the exact vehicle manual. |
| Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT | Approved freeway routes in California and parts of Nevada, in moderate-to-heavy traffic below 40 mph, during daytime and clear weather, with clear lane markings and no construction zone. | Conditional Level 3 driving while the system is active within its operating conditions; it can permit approved secondary activities. | Be ready to retake control when requested. | Level 3 applies only while DRIVE PILOT is engaged within its conditions. It does not describe Mercedes-Benz’s other driver-assistance features. |
The table reflects official descriptions available on October 8, 2026, and is not a feature-equivalence test. The speed figures are system operating limits stated by the manufacturers, not recommended driving speeds: BMW USA lists Highway Assistant hands-free use up to 85 mph on controlled-access highways for equipped vehicles; Mercedes-Benz USA lists DRIVE PILOT below 40 mph in its specified conditions. The live pages do not state publication dates for those figures.
Why the automation level changes the comparison
Level 2 partial automation combines functions such as lane centering and adaptive cruise control, but the driver remains responsible for the driving task. That is the relevant distinction for Tesla FSD (Supervised), BMW Highway Assistant, Ford BlueCruise and GM Super Cruise in the described use cases. A hands-free feature is not necessarily eyes-off: Ford and GM explicitly require eyes-on supervision, while BMW says drivers retain control and responsibility. Tesla’s manual requires full attention and warns that intervention can be necessary.
DRIVE PILOT is different in kind, not simply a more capable version of hands-free Level 2. Mercedes-Benz USA identifies it as a Level 3 conditional driving system. The eyes-off allowance is tied to the system actually being active within its approved operating domain, and the user must take control when requested. Mercedes’ description of Level 2 makes the contrast clear: those features may support steering, braking or acceleration, but the driver remains continuously responsible.

How the systems differ in practice
Tesla: broader road scenarios, with supervision required
Tesla’s Model S owner manual describes FSD (Supervised) as attempting to travel to a destination while responding to route features such as turns, intersections and roundabouts. Its stated scope includes residential and city streets, unlike features described specifically for designated or compatible highways. That wider intended scope does not remove the need to supervise: Tesla warns that the driver may need to intervene, including in construction zones and complex intersections. The exact feature behavior and availability depend on the vehicle’s configuration, hardware, software, market and build date.
Keep “Supervised” in the name. Tesla’s description does not establish that the car is autonomous or that its driver can disengage.
BMW: confirm Highway Assistant, not just the package name
BMW Group characterizes Highway Assistant as part of its Level 2 driver-assistance generation and says drivers retain full control and responsibility. BMW USA lists hands-free driving up to 85 mph on controlled-access highways for vehicles equipped with the feature. Highway Assistant should not be treated as synonymous with the broader Driving Assistant Professional package: the model, software generation, road eligibility and market can affect whether hands-free operation is supported.

Ford and GM: hands-free highway assistance remains eyes-on
Ford BlueCruise adds hands-free use to adaptive cruise control on designated Blue Zone roads. Ford’s official page states, “BlueCruise is not full self-driving technology,” and requires the driver to keep eyes on the road and be ready to take control. Lane centering, in-lane repositioning and lane changes are listed for applicable versions, not as a guarantee for every vehicle.

GM describes Super Cruise as hands-free assistance on compatible roads and under specified conditions. It can manage steering, acceleration and braking while the driver watches the road; automatic lane changes are available on eligible vehicles. The compatible-road network and feature set vary, so the vehicle’s manual and current compatibility information matter.
Mercedes: a narrow Level 3 operating domain
Mercedes-Benz USA’s DRIVE PILOT conditions are specific: approved freeway routes in California and parts of Nevada; moderate-to-heavy traffic below 40 mph; daytime and clear weather; clear lane markings; a visible driver; and no construction zone. The system may allow approved secondary activities while engaged, but the driver must retake control when asked. This is a conditional allowance, not a general permission to stop watching the road in a Mercedes.

What to check before comparing or buying a vehicle
A brand name or package name alone does not establish that a particular car has a feature, or that it will work on a particular trip. Before relying on any system, verify the exact vehicle’s model year, trim, market, hardware, software version and package, along with road eligibility and any activation requirements. Use the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s current feature or compatibility information; maps, software and availability can change.
- Road and geographic coverage: Is the feature restricted to mapped highways, designated zones or approved routes, or does the manufacturer describe broader road scenarios?
- Driver monitoring and handoff: Does the system require hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, or both? What alerts and escalation apply, and what must the driver do when prompted?
- Maneuvers: Confirm whether the exact vehicle supports only lane and speed assistance or also lane changes, turns, intersections or other functions.
- Equipment and activation: Check compatibility for the specific model and configuration, and whether the feature requires separate activation or another eligibility condition.
What independent safety evidence can—and cannot—tell you
IIHS explains the distinction between Level 2 assistance and more advanced automation, and it evaluates partial-automation safeguards such as driver monitoring, attention alerts and fail-safe behavior. In its initial partial-automation safeguard ratings, reported in 2024, no evaluated system met every safeguard requirement; results varied across systems. Those evaluations address safeguards against misuse and inattentiveness, not how well each vehicle drives in every road scenario.

The cited material does not establish a current, controlled five-way road test of the precise Tesla, BMW, Ford, GM and Mercedes configurations described here. It therefore does not support naming a universal “best,” “safest” or most capable system, or comparing intervention rates. A meaningful vehicle-to-vehicle verdict would require matching model years, trims, software, operating conditions and test methods.
