How Teams Use Machine Learning to Optimize Race-Car Setup and Strategy

Machine learning can help estimate candidate car settings and forecast race-strategy scenarios, but telemetry, testing, driver feedback, and human judgment remain essential.

Machine learning can help race teams turn measurements and simulations into candidate car settings or forecasts of what may happen during a race. Those are different jobs: setup models estimate how changes to the car may affect its behavior, while strategy models assess choices such as when to pit or how to respond to a rival. In both cases, a prediction is an input to engineering and strategic judgment—not an automatic instruction. The strongest public setup example is a 2021 IndyCar modeling study; Formula 1 sources provide more detail on race forecasting, preparation, and broadcast explanations.

What machine learning does in race engineering

Machine learning (ML) is a way to fit a model to examples so it can estimate relationships in measured or simulated data. In motorsport, those estimates may help answer questions such as “What might this suspension setting do?” or “How could a pit stop now affect our position later?” The model can identify patterns, generate candidate settings, or forecast possible outcomes. It does not, by itself, establish that a setting is safe, legal, quick on a particular circuit, or preferred by the driver.

ML is one part of a wider engineering process. Teams also use physics-based vehicle models, conventional statistical analysis, telemetry dashboards, simulation, track testing, regulations, and experience. A data-analysis tool is not necessarily machine learning: the Formula Student case from National Instruments, for example, documents instrumentation and telemetry analysis to inform setup changes, but does not claim an ML deployment.

Public examples also need to be kept in their proper categories. A 2021 IndyCar research paper describes an artificial neural network (ANN) for predicting setup parameters using a vehicle model. Formula 1 (F1) describes data-driven race-strategy insights and a 2026 broadcast graphic. Neither example proves that every team uses the same systems—or that a public-facing graphic is the tool a team uses to make its private race calls.

Setup optimization and strategy forecasting solve different problems

Question Mechanical setup Race strategy
Objective Estimate how vehicle parameters affect handling and vehicle response, subject to practical constraints. Compare possible actions and their likely effect on race outcome or position.
Typical time horizon Setup development, simulation, and practice or test sessions. Pre-race planning, then decisions across laps and stints.
Inputs Vehicle-dynamics measurements and simulations, such as suspension movement, acceleration, steering, and wheel behavior. Timing, tire behavior, competitor pace, weather, pit-loss estimates, and changing race events.
Validation Compare model predictions with physical tests and driver response. Test scenarios in simulations and revise them against observed pace and live events.
Constraints Physical feasibility, available setup range, reliability, regulations, and driver needs. Tire availability, traffic, pit loss, rivals’ choices, and uncertainty such as safety cars or weather.
Human role Engineers and drivers assess whether a predicted setting is usable and produces the intended behavior. Strategists and race engineers interpret forecasts, choose among options, and adapt as conditions change.

The table describes the distinction, not a universal blueprint. Teams differ in their tools and procedures, and public accounts reveal only part of their work.

How machine learning can support car setup

Start with measured behavior and a defined target

A setup question has to be made specific before a model can be useful. Engineers might ask how a change in a suspension-related parameter affects vehicle response, or what set of parameters is associated with a desired behavior. Sensors and test measurements provide evidence about how the car behaved; vehicle models can represent relationships that are difficult or expensive to explore through track runs alone.

The 2021 study by D’Andrea and co-authors in Vehicles describes a mathematical-model approach for IndyCar setup prediction. Its objectives included reducing tire deflection, suspension travel, body movement, and weight transfer. Those are the objectives reported for that study, not a universal definition of a fast setup. In practice, a team may need to balance lap performance with predictable handling, tire behavior, reliability, and what the driver can use consistently.

This distinction matters because an optimizer can only pursue what its objective and constraints encode. If the model is asked to reduce a particular movement, that does not prove the resulting setup will be quickest overall. Engineers must decide what “better” means for the car, track, session, and driver, and interpret any predicted trade-offs.

Use a vehicle model to generate and assess candidates

In the IndyCar paper, researchers began with a quarter-car model for ANN training and then used a seven-degree-of-freedom vertical-dynamics model to predict setup parameters. The study used telemetry acquisition at Houston and mathematical modeling. Its stated motivation was to reduce the time and cost of setup development for race teams.

That is evidence of a proposed modeling method, not evidence that a named current team deployed it in competition. The paper does not establish autonomous configuration of a race car, proven race wins, or a quantified lap-time gain. Its contribution is narrower and still useful: it illustrates how a neural network can be paired with vehicle-dynamics models to estimate candidate settings against stated objectives.

Check predictions on the real car

A predicted setting is a hypothesis to assess, not a substitute for track evidence. Engineers need to consider whether it is physically feasible, within the applicable rules, repeatable, and compatible with the driver’s feedback. Testing can reveal effects that the model did not represent well or conditions that differ from its training or simulation data. If the car’s measured response does not match the prediction, the team has reason to investigate the assumptions, measurements, or model rather than blindly trust its output.

Why telemetry and instrumentation come first

ML cannot extract reliable meaning from signals that were not measured well or cannot be interpreted in context. A useful setup process therefore begins with instrumentation, suitable sensors, and analysis that connects readings to what the car was doing on track.

A National Instruments Formula Student case describes recording suspension displacement, acceleration, steering angle, and wheel behavior, as well as interfacing with electronic control unit and power-distribution data. Readings were transmitted wirelessly so engineers could analyze vehicle behavior during setup testing. The case shows how data acquisition can inform engineering changes; it is not evidence of machine learning in that project.

For either modeling or conventional analysis, the important question is not simply how many readings are available. Engineers need to know what was measured, under what conditions, and how it relates to driver input and vehicle response. A sensor stream can flag a pattern, but people still need to decide whether it reflects a meaningful setup issue, a track condition, a measurement problem, or some combination.

How machine learning supports race strategy

Forecast choices, not just a single pit time

Strategy forecasting addresses a different question from setup prediction: which sequence of race actions may produce a better result as circumstances evolve? Possible decisions include when to pit, when to change tires, whether to extend a stint, how to respond to an undercut threat, and how to react to a safety car. Each option depends on assumptions about pace, tire behavior, traffic, pit loss, rivals, and what may happen next.

F1’s 2018 announcement of its partnership with AWS described machine-learning insights based on historical race data and real-time streams, including predictions about pit windows and tire-change timing. That account is evidence of publicized data and forecasting work; it should not be read as a complete description of any team’s private decision system.

A forecast is conditional, not a promise. For example, an estimate that a pit window is opening depends on the model’s inputs and assumptions about the race. A change in weather, traffic, tire performance, or a rival’s action can alter which option looks best. Strategists compare alternatives and contingencies rather than treating a single predicted outcome as certain.

Combine historical context with live information

AWS’s F1 overview, accessed in 2026, says each car has 300 sensors producing 1.1 million telemetry data points per second, and describes combining current data with more than 70 years of historical race data. These are figures published by AWS/F1; they describe the scale and historical context in that account, not a guarantee that every data point is used by a particular model or decision.

Relevant strategy inputs can include lap and sector timing, tire compound and degradation, weather, competitor pace, pit-loss estimates, safety-car scenarios, and live events. Historical data can provide a basis for comparison, while current information describes the race as it unfolds. The value comes from interpreting those inputs together: a pit-window estimate, for example, is meaningful only in relation to pace, traffic, tire condition, and the likely response from rivals.

Understand the purpose of F1’s 2026 Strategy Insight

F1’s 2026 Strategy Insight is a broadcast-facing graphic that combines live timing, telemetry, and historical race data to explain why strategy might change. Its described factors include tire performance, safety-car risk, rival behavior, extending a stint, and undercut threats. It is meant to make possible strategic developments legible to viewers.

That graphic should not be conflated with a private team system. A broadcast explanation can show selected factors and plausible scenarios without exposing a team’s complete decision matrix, assumptions, or internal tools. Likewise, F1’s public partnership descriptions do not establish that all teams use the same model or that a visible prediction is itself a team instruction.

How teams test and revise a race plan

Prepare scenarios before the race

Race strategy work begins before the lights go out. F1’s strategist guide describes building plans from circuit information and competitor pace, preparing scenarios, and using practice sessions to test assumptions. Long runs and observed pace help teams assess tire degradation; qualifying positions and Friday data can feed simulations of possible race situations.

Ruth Buscombe, an F1 strategist, summarized the preparation behind a race call this way: “Strategy is 98 per cent preparation, and not the high-speed chess you get to see on TV, which is – as with most jobs – the tip of the iceberg”. The point is not that every eventuality can be predicted. Preparation gives strategists a set of options and assumptions to revisit when the race departs from the baseline.

Update the plan as evidence changes

Practice data is useful only to the extent that it resembles race conditions. The strategy guide describes checking tire degradation and pace against practice and long-run evidence, then revising simulations as the team learns more. Weather, traffic, competitor behavior, tire behavior, and safety cars can all invalidate an earlier assumption or change the cost of a choice.

Mercedes Head of Strategy Rosie Wait has described the importance of connecting driver reports with observed data. That is a practical example of human-machine work: a model can organize evidence and expose possible outcomes, but driver feedback and engineering interpretation help explain what the numbers mean on track. Strategists and race engineers make the call within the changing constraints of the event.

What public examples do—and do not—establish

Research models are not proof of current deployment

The IndyCar ANN paper is a published modeling example. It should not be presented as a production system adopted by a particular team, nor as evidence that ML automatically selects a race-winning setup. Similarly, the Formula Student telemetry case establishes data collection and analysis for setup work, not ML usage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Broadcast tools are not internal team systems

F1’s public descriptions of pit-window and strategy insights, including its 2026 Strategy Insight graphic, explain data-informed forecasts and fan-facing explanations. They do not reveal a team’s full private model, the specific information its strategists see, or how much weight it gives a prediction when making a call.

Partnership announcements have a defined scope

The FIA’s 2026 announcement of a partnership with Tomorrow.io concerns weather intelligence in FIA Race Control and event workflows. Weather can matter to strategy, but that announcement does not establish that race teams use the service directly or that it optimizes mechanical setups.

A separate 2021 FIA text refers to ML/AI in a defined aerodynamic simulation-testing context. It is historical and limited to that context; it should not be used to make a claim about what is permitted under 2026 rules. Regulations are series- and season-specific, so anyone making a present-day compliance decision needs the applicable current rules rather than an inference from an older text.

What this means for teams and fans

For a team, the practical value of ML is not that it removes uncertainty. It can help structure a search through possible settings or race scenarios, make patterns easier to identify, and direct attention toward options worth examining. The model’s usefulness depends on the quality and relevance of its data, the target it is asked to optimize, and whether people validate its predictions against the car and the race.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For fans, published examples offer a window into the kinds of questions that data can help answer: how suspension behavior relates to a setup choice, how tire degradation may affect a stint, or how a safety car could change the timing of a stop. But the public view is necessarily partial. F1 sources acknowledge that teams disclose little about details such as tire wear, fuel use, and decision matrices. The responsible conclusion is that ML can support race engineering and strategy where documented—not that every team uses one universal system, or that algorithms have replaced the people making the decisions.
