The car uses sensors and software to interpret its surroundings, choose how to move, and control acceleration and braking. The exact technology, service area, passenger rules, and support process depend on the operator and city; Waymo’s published service is one well-documented example, not a universal template.
What a robotaxi does—and what it does not mean
A robotaxi is a passenger vehicle operating as part of a ride service in which an automated driving system performs the driving for a trip within the service’s operating conditions. The passenger still has practical responsibilities: requesting the ride, reaching the pickup point, entering safely, fastening a seatbelt, and following the operator’s rider rules. The vehicle handles steering, acceleration, and braking during the fully autonomous Waymo ride described in its FAQ; riders do not operate the pedals or steer.

“Robotaxi” does not mean that every vehicle of this type uses the same sensors, software, maps, layout, or operating rules. Nor does it mean a service is available everywhere or in every circumstance. The useful way to understand a particular ride is to separate the driving system from the service around it: the system drives, while the operator sets where and when it can be booked and how passengers interact with it.

How the automated driving system works
A practical mental model is sense, interpret, plan, act. Sensors collect information about the road and nearby objects; software estimates what is happening and what may happen next; the system chooses a route and driving actions; and vehicle controls carry them out. Waymo describes its own system this way, but the particulars below are company-specific rather than a specification for every robotaxi.

1. Sensors collect different kinds of information
Waymo says its vehicles use lidar, cameras, and radar. Lidar creates a three-dimensional view of the surroundings; cameras capture visual details; and radar helps measure the speed and direction of objects. Combining these inputs gives the system different ways to assess the space around the vehicle and the movement of other road users.
Waymo states that its lidar measures object size and distance in a 360-degree field, up to 300 meters away. It says its fifth-generation camera system can identify details such as pedestrians and stop signs at distances greater than 500 meters. Those are the company’s stated specifications for the described system—not guaranteed detection distances for every object, road, weather condition, vehicle, or robotaxi provider.
2. Software builds a picture of the situation
The system has to do more than detect an object. It must estimate where the vehicle is, distinguish relevant features in its surroundings, and track how the situation is changing. Waymo says its onboard software processes sensor information in real time. Its FAQ summarizes the software questions as: “Where am I? What’s around me? What will happen next? And what should I do?” That is Waymo’s description of its own process, not a formal standard shared by all operators.
Waymo also says a detailed 3D map helps the vehicle localize itself and make route decisions. A map can provide context for the system’s position and the road layout, while live sensor information shows what is happening now. The distinction matters: a map is not a substitute for sensing current traffic, and the existence of a mapped route does not establish that a ride can be requested in every place along it.
3. The system selects a path and controls the vehicle
After interpreting the scene, the software selects a route and driving actions in response to traffic and other conditions. Vehicle motion controls then carry out the chosen path using acceleration and braking. In a passenger-facing account, this is why you can see a destination and route without being expected to drive: the automated system is making and executing those driving decisions.

The system is not a promise that every trip will be offered or proceed under every condition. Service availability can be limited by the operator’s designated area, safety considerations, technical issues, or severe weather. The rider-facing service and its boundaries are part of how a robotaxi works, not a footnote to the technology.
What happens from booking to drop-off
Waymo’s published rider flow illustrates the sequence. The operator’s app provides the trip request, pickup instructions, and vehicle access. The interface and rules may differ elsewhere, so follow the instructions shown for the ride you actually book.
- Set up the app and choose a destination. Request the trip through the service’s app. Waymo says the app displays a price estimate before booking.
- Go to the assigned pickup point. Follow the app’s location and pickup instructions rather than assuming the vehicle will meet you at any curb you choose. Waymo says rider location helps it make pickup more accurate and direct passengers to the vehicle.
- Identify and unlock the arriving vehicle. Waymo’s flow uses the app to unlock the vehicle. Use the service’s instructions to confirm you have the correct ride and board at the designated spot.
- Enter, sit down, and buckle up. Follow the vehicle’s rider guidance and any passenger or child-seat requirements before the trip starts.
- Press “Start Ride.” In Waymo’s stated process, the rider presses this control after boarding and buckling up. The automated driving system then performs the driving.
- Follow the displayed trip and exit at the drop-off. Waymo says its passenger screen can show what the Waymo Driver sees and the route it is taking. Use the app and in-car instructions for the destination and any end-of-ride steps.
Waymo says it allows up to four passengers per ride. Capacity, seating arrangements, and access procedures may differ among services, so do not assume that a group of that size—or a particular vehicle layout—will be accepted by another operator.
What it can feel like to ride without a driver
Once the ride begins, the most visible difference is that no passenger is expected to take the wheel or press pedals. Instead, the rider follows the vehicle’s interface and the trip information available in the car or app. In Waymo’s example, the screen can display the system’s view and the route. That may help explain what the vehicle is responding to, but it does not mean the screen exposes every internal decision or guarantees that a passenger can predict exactly what the vehicle will do next.
The experience can also feel different from a conventional ride because the passenger cannot ask an onboard driver to change the route or explain a maneuver. A 2026 qualitative study by Yue Deng and co-authors, based on 18 semi-structured interviews and ride experiences, found that participants valued increased agency and consistent driving. Some also raised concerns about limited flexibility, insufficient transparency, and emergency handling. The study describes a small sample of experiences, not a survey that establishes how all passengers feel.

Plan for a service with defined rules rather than assuming every preference can be handled during the trip. Check the pickup and drop-off instructions, passenger limit, and any child-seat or accessibility information available for the specific service area before you request a ride.
Where and when a ride may be available
A robotaxi ride is only requestable where that provider offers service and where the requested trip fits its current operating boundaries. Waymo’s help information says rides are limited to eligible service areas. Its fully autonomous FAQ lists safety considerations, app technical issues, severe or inclement weather, and public-health issues among reasons the service may be unavailable.
That means a service area should not be treated as blanket availability for every address, route, or time. The app is the practical place to check whether your pickup and destination are eligible and whether a ride can be booked at that moment. Operating areas, hours, and restrictions are provider- and city-specific and can change. A city appearing in a company’s information does not by itself establish that public rides are currently available throughout that city.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Passenger responsibilities, including trips with children
Not driving does not mean having no responsibilities. At a minimum, passengers need to reach the correct pickup point, board the assigned vehicle, use seatbelts, and follow the operator’s rider instructions. Capacity and age policies should be checked before travel, especially when booking for a group or with children.
For Waymo, the help page says passengers must bring a car seat or booster seat for a young child and install it in the back seat according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Its FAQ says children under 8 cannot sit in the front. These are Waymo-specific instructions; age rules and account requirements can vary by service area and may change. Confirm the current operator guidance before the trip rather than relying on another city’s or provider’s policy.

Support and what to do if something goes wrong
Waymo says riders can contact support through the car or the app. If its system detects a collision, the company says its support team contacts riders through the vehicle speakers or by phone, dispatches roadside assistance, and contacts emergency services. These are Waymo’s stated procedures, not a guarantee about how another operator handles incidents.
If you need assistance during an ordinary ride, use the support method provided in the vehicle or app and follow any displayed instructions. Do not assume that a remote support representative is steering the vehicle: the cited Waymo materials describe rider support and incident response, while identifying the autonomous driving system as the driver. Specific response times, escalation procedures, and support capabilities are not established here for every service.
How to read robotaxi safety claims
Safety figures need their scope attached. In a September 2026 company post, Waymo reported analysis of more than 270 million fully autonomous miles through June 2026 in Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. Against its human-driver comparison, Waymo reported 841 fewer injury-causing crashes, an 82% reduction, and 95% fewer crashes involving serious injury or worse. It also reported injury-causing crash rates 93% lower for crashes involving pedestrians, 86% lower for cyclists, and 82% lower for motorcyclists.
Waymo says its estimate of 841 avoided injury-causing crashes assumes at least one injured person per prevented crash. These are the company’s analyses, not independent proof of universal robotaxi performance. The results depend on the comparison benchmark, locations, time period, and definitions used. They should not be applied to a different operator, a different city, or all robotaxi miles without evidence that supports that comparison.
The 2026 interview study adds a different kind of evidence: it describes how 18 participants experienced rides and perceived safety, rather than calculating crash rates across a population. Quantitative company safety comparisons and small qualitative accounts answer different questions. Neither alone tells a passenger exactly how a particular future trip will feel or what will happen in an unusual situation.
What to check before you book
- Eligibility: Confirm that the pickup and destination are within the service’s current operating area and that a ride is available at the time you need it.
- Pickup and drop-off: Read the app’s assigned locations and instructions; do not assume a curbside pickup at a preferred address.
- Price and capacity: Review the displayed estimate and confirm the passenger limit for that ride.
- Children: Check the operator’s current age and seating rules, and bring and install any required child or booster seat.
- Support: Know how to reach assistance in the app or vehicle before the ride starts.
- Evidence claims: When a provider publishes safety statistics, check whose data they are, the covered locations and period, the comparison group, and the crash definitions.
These checks are more useful than assuming that every service shares one set of vehicle features or policies. The relevant comparison points are local availability and hours, booking and pickup procedures, capacity and child-seat rules, vehicle layout and interface, support and incident handling, and the scope of disclosed safety evidence.
