Open source is changing how automotive companies build and coordinate software: automakers, suppliers, and technology firms can develop shared foundations instead of separately recreating every common component. Projects such as Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) and Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) offer platforms, components, and engineering processes for that work. But an open-source project or reference platform is not automatically validated or deployed in a production vehicle.
What does open source mean in cars?
Open-source automotive software is software developed under a license that lets people inspect, use, and contribute to its code, subject to that license’s terms. In practice, the shared work may be a small component, a development tool, or a larger collection of software intended to support vehicle systems.
The opportunity comes from the way automotive software is made. An automaker’s vehicles depend on components and integration work from suppliers, semiconductor companies, and software vendors. Companies may compete on the features that define a brand while relying on many similar underlying capabilities. Sharing some of those foundations can reduce duplicated work and make collaboration across organizations easier.
“Software-defined vehicle” (SDV) describes an approach in which software plays a central role in vehicle capabilities and their development or management. It does not mean that every vehicle function is delivered through the cloud, nor does the label itself establish which software is open source.

How are automakers and suppliers using open source?
AGL’s SoDeV reference platform
Automotive Grade Linux’s Software Defined Vehicle (SoDeV) platform is a concrete example of shared integration work. AGL describes it as combining the AGL Unified Code Base with Linux containers, VirtIO, Xen, Yocto, Zephyr, and other projects. Its stated aims include consolidating electronic control units (ECUs), separating software from hardware through virtualization, and supporting cloud integration.
On May 14, 2026, AGL said an initial SoDeV version was available through its Ultimate Unagi release. AGL described developer support for Renesas Sparrow Hawk reference boards, virtual machines, and cloud-based processor environments. These are development targets for a reference platform, not evidence that SoDeV is deployed across production vehicles.

Eclipse SDV’s wider ecosystem
Eclipse SDV covers more than in-vehicle code. Its charter includes development tools and workflows, fleet software management, cloud integration, reference distributions, and interoperability. It also names quality management, functional safety, and software supply-chain security as areas for coordinated engineering and governance.
The project catalogue includes Eclipse iceoryx, for zero-copy inter-process data exchange, and Eclipse Safe Open Vehicle Core, which targets an open-source core stack for high-performance embedded ECUs. These projects serve different parts of the software landscape; being part of the same ecosystem does not mean they form one finished vehicle system.

How the initiatives differ
| Initiative | What the cited milestone establishes | What it does not establish | |
|---|---|---|---|
| AGL SoDeV | A reference platform integrating AGL UCB with container, virtualization, operating-system, and related projects. | AGL announced an initial version through Ultimate Unagi on May 14, 2026, with support for specified developer environments. | Production deployment, fleet-wide adoption, or independently measured savings. |
| Eclipse SDV | A project ecosystem spanning development workflows, vehicle software, fleet management, cloud integration, interoperability, and engineering processes. | Its charter defines areas for collaboration; its catalogue includes projects such as iceoryx and Safe Open Vehicle Core. | That every project is integrated into a production vehicle or meets a particular vehicle program’s validation requirements. |
| Eclipse S-CORE and the automotive-grade open-source MoU | A coordinated industry effort centered on Eclipse S-CORE, alongside a broader Eclipse SDV ecosystem. | Eclipse and VDA reported 11 MoU signatories in June 2025 and 32 companies on January 7, 2026; they said S-CORE’s first public release, version 0.5, arrived in November 2025. | That 32 production vehicle programs use the software or that the release is production-validated. |
What could shared automotive software improve?
- Less duplicated work: Organizations can collaborate on common software foundations rather than independently building every underlying component.
- More reusable integration: AGL presents SoDeV as a pre-integrated reference platform intended to reduce integration work. The platform is a starting point, not proof that integration is complete for a given vehicle.
- More hardware flexibility: Virtualization and hardware abstraction can help decouple software from particular hardware implementations. Actual portability still depends on integration and validation across the hardware variants a vehicle program supports.
- Shared compatibility and workflow practices: Eclipse SDV’s charter makes compatibility rules, development workflows, and reference distributions part of its scope, alongside software components.
- A wider contributor base: Cross-company projects can pool expertise and maintenance effort, though participation alone does not guarantee that a component will be maintained for a vehicle’s full service life.
In their January 7, 2026 announcement, Eclipse and VDA stated potential gains of “up to 40% reduction in development, integration, and maintenance efforts for non-differentiating software” and “up to 30% faster time to market through shared, automotive-grade components.” Those are targets presented by the organizations, not independently verified results or guaranteed savings for a particular manufacturer.
Does open-source automotive software mean a car is safer or more secure?
No. Open access to source code can support scrutiny and collaboration, but it does not by itself make software safe, secure, interoperable, or ready for production. A vehicle program must still integrate and test the software in its intended environment, manage changes and dependencies, and show that the resulting system meets applicable requirements.

- Identify the layer and workload. Is the project an in-vehicle component, a development tool, a fleet-management capability, a reference platform, or a process initiative?
- Check hardware scope. Find out which boards, processors, or virtual environments are supported and whether portability across relevant vehicle variants has been demonstrated.
- Examine integration boundaries. Determine how the software fits with existing vehicle architectures and cloud or development workflows; a pre-integrated reference does not remove program-specific integration.
- Review governance and maintenance. Consider the project’s licensing, decision-making, release practices, and plans for maintaining components over long vehicle lifetimes.
- Look for quality and security processes. Check what evidence exists for testing, functional safety, cybersecurity, compatibility, and supply-chain management—not just whether the source is public.
- Verify the adoption claim. Ask whether the evidence describes an announced project, a released reference platform, a validated production component, or a named vehicle deployment. Do not treat membership or signatory counts as production adoption.
What the current milestones show—and what they do not
The dated announcements establish that organized, cross-company automotive software collaboration is growing and that developers have access to reference platforms and projects. Eclipse and VDA’s reported increase from 11 MoU signatories in June 2025 to 32 companies by January 7, 2026 is evidence of organizational participation, not a count of vehicles using the software.
The available milestones do not establish broad production adoption, independently measured industry-wide cost reductions, or fleet-wide outcomes. Those claims require deployment and impact evidence beyond a project charter, release announcement, or stated target.
