NHRA drag racing uses two different clocks to describe a pass: reaction time measures a driver’s launch, while elapsed time (e.t.) measures the vehicle’s run down the track. In an elimination race, the first eligible vehicle to cross the finish line wins—not necessarily the one with the lower e.t. A quicker launch can overcome a slower run, producing a holeshot win. A red-light start or another disqualification can override the apparent finish order.
What reaction time and elapsed time measure
Reaction time and elapsed time are related to the same pass, but they answer different questions. Reaction time asks how quickly the driver gets the vehicle moving after the green signal. Elapsed time asks how long the vehicle takes to travel the timed course. Neither number, on its own, tells the whole story of an elimination-round result.

| Measure | What it describes | What starts or stops it | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reaction time (R/T) | The launch response: the time from green until the vehicle’s front tires clear the staging beam. | It is measured relative to the green signal and the front tires clearing the staging beam. | A smaller positive reading means the vehicle cleared the beam sooner after green. NHRA defines .000 as a perfect reaction time. |
| Elapsed time (e.t.) | The vehicle’s timed travel downtrack. | The lane timer begins as the vehicle leaves its staging beam and stops when the vehicle reaches the finish-line beam. | A lower e.t. means a quicker timed run over that event’s course; it does not by itself establish the elimination winner. |
NHRA’s glossary defines reaction time by the front tires clearing the staging beam after green. NHRA’s 2023 media guide describes the staging-beam timer this way: “This beam triggers an independent ‘lane timer’ for elapsed time and will trigger the red foul light if a false start occurs.” The wording highlights why the measurements should not be conflated: the reaction reading concerns the start signal and launch, while the lane’s e.t. clock records the run from the starting line to the finish.

How the timing sequence works
Each lane is timed independently
Each competitor has a separate lane, staging beams and timer. Once both vehicles are staged, the Christmas Tree gives the start sequence. When a vehicle leaves its staging beam, its lane timer starts. At the finish, the finish-line beam stops e.t. clocking; NHRA’s timing-system guide says that beam also ends the top-speed clock and triggers the win light for the deserving lane.

Independent lane timing matters because the cars do not have to leave at precisely the same instant for the comparison to work. Each lane records its own start and finish events. The displayed e.t. is the timed interval for that vehicle’s run, not a direct measurement of how far ahead one car was when both crossed the line. The finish order determines which eligible vehicle got there first; the reaction and e.t. readings help explain how.
The Tree signals when a run may begin
The Christmas Tree’s amber sequence precedes green. NHRA describes two broad configurations:
- Pro Tree: three amber lights flash together, followed by green four-tenths of a second later.
- Sportsman/Full Tree: three amber lights flash consecutively, five-tenths apart, followed by green five-tenths after the last amber.
These are general descriptions, not a guarantee of the setting for every class or event. The applicable current class rulebook is the authority for a particular category’s exact configuration. A driver must react to the sequence used in that class; the elapsed-time and finish-order principles do not authorize assuming that every NHRA category uses the same Tree timing.

How NHRA decides who wins
In a normal side-by-side elimination race, the first vehicle to cross the finish line wins if it remains eligible. The lower e.t. is not an automatic win condition. A vehicle may have a slower e.t. because its timed run took longer, yet still reach the finish first if its driver began the run sooner relative to the opponent.
NHRA calls this a holeshot win: the driver with the better reaction time, or who left the starting line first, wins despite recording the slower e.t. The name describes the decisive advantage at the start. It does not mean that the e.t. is wrong or that the vehicle with the faster e.t. did not make a quicker pass. It means the outcome is based on the overall race to the finish, not on comparing e.t. values alone.
A documented holeshot example
NHRA’s report on the 2026 Midwest Nationals final gives a clear illustration. Aaron Stanfield had a .018 reaction time, while Greg Stanfield recorded the quicker e.t.: 6.547 seconds to Aaron’s 6.556 seconds. Aaron’s advantage at the start produced an approximately one-thousandth-second holeshot victory. In other words, Greg’s car covered the timed distance in less time, but Aaron’s earlier launch was enough to put him across the finish first.

The figures should be read together, not as competing definitions of “fastest.” Greg had the lower e.t.; Aaron had the winning finish order and a better launch in that race. The reported margin is approximate, so it should not be treated as a precisely stated gap beyond the report’s qualification. Nor does one final establish a typical reaction time, typical margin, or general win probability.
What a red light means—and why eligibility matters
A red light indicates a foul start: the driver left before green. NHRA’s general explainer says a red-light start in eliminations disqualifies the driver. That is why the first vehicle that appears to cross the finish is not necessarily the winner: the result depends on both finish order and whether each competitor remains eligible under the rules.
NHRA’s explainer also identifies leaving the lane boundary, failing to stage, and failing post-run inspection as possible grounds for disqualification. These are separate from the ordinary comparison of reaction time and e.t. If a disqualification applies, it can decide the result regardless of which vehicle seems to have crossed first. The current class rulebook governs the specific rule and its application.

Qualifying is different from eliminations in one important respect: NHRA’s glossary says a red light during qualifying does not invalidate the recorded time for that qualifying attempt. Do not apply the elimination-round consequence to qualifying results. The purpose and rules of those sessions differ, so the same light does not necessarily have the same effect on the recorded outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the numbers on a result
When comparing two elimination passes, read the result in a deliberate order. First establish who was eligible to win; then identify the finish order; then use reaction time and e.t. to understand the result. If the driver who crossed first had the slower e.t., compare the reaction readings: a start advantage may explain the holeshot. If there was a red light or another disqualification, do not infer the winner from the displayed e.t. alone.

- Identify the finish order. For an ordinary elimination race, the first eligible vehicle across the finish wins.
- Compare reaction times. These readings describe the launch response, not how long the vehicle took to complete the course.
- Compare e.t. values. These show the timed runs. The lower number is the quicker e.t., but it does not replace finish order as the ordinary winner criterion.
- Account for the class and format. NHRA notes that applicable dial-under or index categories can affect the ordinary first-across-the-line rule, and race distance varies by class.
This method avoids a common misreading: seeing a lower e.t. and assuming that racer must have won. The e.t. compares timed travel; the reaction time gives information about the start; the finish order and eligibility establish the ordinary elimination result.

Why the reaction-time display convention matters
NHRA defines a perfect reaction time as .000. That is the current display convention, but historical results may use a different base. NHRA’s historical account says it changed the display base from .400 to .000 in 2003. Under the earlier convention, .400 represented a perfect reaction; under the current one, .000 does. Negative reaction-time values indicate red-light starts.
This historical change matters if you compare raw numbers from different eras. A historical .400 and a current .000 can both represent a perfect reaction under their respective conventions; they should not be ranked as though they were readings on an unchanged scale. Before drawing conclusions from older results, establish which convention the record used. NHRA’s glossary wording is direct: “A perfect reaction time is .000.”
Race distance and class-specific rules
The timing concepts explain the relationship between launch, timed travel and finish order, but they do not imply that every NHRA vehicle races the same distance or under identical rules. NHRA’s 2023 media guide describes a 1,320-foot NHRA event racing surface and a 1,000-foot distance for Top Fuel and Funny Car. These figures are qualified descriptions from that guide, not a universal distance statement for all categories or a guarantee of a particular event configuration.
NHRA also notes that applicable dial-under or index categories can affect the ordinary first-across-the-line rule. Because class rules and event formats matter, use the relevant current rulebook when deciding how a particular race is adjudicated. The general explanation here is for understanding the two clocks and the ordinary elimination result, not a substitute for category-specific regulations.
The practical distinction
Reaction time tells you about the driver’s response at the start. Elapsed time tells you how long the vehicle spent making its timed run. The race is decided by the first eligible vehicle to finish under the applicable rules, so the racer with the slower e.t. can still win by leaving sooner and carrying that advantage to the line. A red light or other disqualification can change the result, while historical reaction-time figures require attention to the display convention in use.
