The NHRA Countdown to the Championship is a six-race playoff for Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle. After the U.S. Nationals, eligible drivers’ points are reset, then rebuilt through the Countdown; the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at Pomona awards more points than the other five races. NHRA’s published 2026 scoring materials explain the reset and race points, but the current tie-break order is not established in the sources available here.
What is the NHRA Countdown to the Championship?
The Countdown is the six-event playoff that determines season champions in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle. In 2026, it opens at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan and ends at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals at Pomona. The championship field and its starting points are set after the U.S. Nationals, the final regular-season event. NHRA’s 2026 Countdown announcement describes the schedule and format.

It helps to think of the playoff in two stages: eligibility and reset determine who enters and with what total; then each race adds points from eliminations, qualifying position and qualifying-session performance. Pomona is the exception to the ordinary event scale: both its elimination points and its qualifying-related scoring are higher.

NHRA describes two eligibility routes. The standard route is to finish among the top ten in points after the U.S. Nationals. A racer outside that group may qualify by meeting NHRA’s minimum qualifying-session participation requirement across regular-season events. This is not an automatic invitation to every racer below tenth place: the participation route depends on satisfying the stated minimum criteria. NHRA’s 2026 U.S. Nationals report references the requirement to participate in three of the five qualifying sessions at Indy.
#1 Best Overall
That Indy-specific note provides context for the final regular-season event; it should not be mistaken for a complete description of every participation rule for the season. The current points page and 2026 media guide are the better references for the reset and scoring schedules, while NHRA’s applicable rulebook or Competition Department guidance is needed to resolve any eligibility edge case not covered in those summaries.
How do NHRA points reset for the Countdown?
At the start of the playoff, the top ten receive a prescribed starting total. First place has a 20-point cushion over second; from second place down, the starting totals are separated by ten points. NHRA’s current Mission Foods Drag Racing Series points page and its 2026 media guide publish the following reset:
| Position entering Countdown | Starting points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 2,100 |
| 2nd | 2,080 |
| 3rd | 2,070 |
| 4th | 2,060 |
| 5th | 2,050 |
| 6th | 2,040 |
| 7th | 2,030 |
| 8th | 2,020 |
| 9th | 2,010 |
| 10th | 2,000 |
Drivers who qualify for the Countdown outside the top ten receive starting totals in ten-point decrements below 2,000 according to their position, as laid out in NHRA’s published reset information. The reset means regular-season points do not simply carry forward unchanged: the playoff begins with a compressed set of totals, and race results determine the movement from there.

How are NHRA Countdown points awarded at each race?
Each of the first five Countdown events uses the ordinary elimination-points scale. The Pomona finale, called Pomona 2 in NHRA’s scoring materials, has a larger scale. The finishing position shown below is the result of eliminations; qualifying points and session bonuses are separate additions.
| Elimination result | Ordinary Countdown event | Pomona 2 finale |
|---|---|---|
| Winner | 100 | 150 |
| Runner-up | 80 | 120 |
| Third-round loser | 60 | 90 |
| Second-round loser | 40 | 60 |
| First-round loser | 20 | 30 |
The Pomona winner earns 50 more elimination points than a winner at an ordinary Countdown race. The larger finale scale also applies to qualifying participation, qualifying position and session performance, so the final event has more ways to change the standings than a regular playoff stop.
What points come from qualifying?
NHRA’s qualifying-related scoring has three components: points for making a qualifying attempt, points based on the final qualifying position, and bonus points for the quickest elapsed times in completed qualifying sessions. The schedule differs at ordinary Countdown events and at Pomona 2.
Qualifying participation and session bonuses
At an ordinary Countdown event, a contestant earns ten points for making one qualifying attempt; at Pomona 2, that value is 15. Separately, each completed qualifying session can award performance bonuses. The quickest elapsed time in a session earns the most, with smaller awards for the next-fastest performances. NHRA does not award a session performance bonus if that session cannot be completed.
| Qualifying-session performance | Ordinary Countdown event | Pomona 2 finale |
|---|---|---|
| Quickest elapsed time | 3 points | 4 points |
| Second quickest | 2 points | 3 points |
| Third quickest | 1 point | 2 points |
| Fourth quickest | No bonus listed | 1 point |
| Session not completed | No performance bonus | No performance bonus |
These bonuses are awarded session by session, not just once for the weekend. A driver can therefore collect more than one session bonus at an event by recording one of the listed performances in multiple completed sessions. The number of sessions that can be completed can vary; there is no bonus for a session that is not run to completion.
Qualifying-position points
The final qualifying position earns another set of points. The bands are the same in concept at both types of event, but Pomona pays more in every listed band.
| Final qualifying position | Ordinary Countdown event | Pomona 2 finale |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 8 points | 10 points |
| 2nd | 7 points | 9 points |
| 3rd | 6 points | 8 points |
| 4th | 5 points | 7 points |
| 5th–6th | 4 points | 6 points |
| 7th–8th | 3 points | 5 points |
| 9th–12th | 2 points | 4 points |
| 13th–16th | 1 point | 3 points |
How to work out a driver’s points from a Countdown event
For a given race, add the points for the elimination result to the qualifying-related points earned at that event. Qualifying position is based on the final qualifying order; session bonuses are based on each completed session’s elapsed times. The point schedules are published by NHRA in its points table and 2026 media guide.
- Choose the event scale. Use the ordinary Countdown column for any of the first five playoff races; use the Pomona 2 column for the finale.
- Find the elimination result. Add the winner, runner-up or appropriate round-loser value from that event’s elimination schedule.
- Add qualifying participation points. Count the qualifying-attempt award if the contestant made at least one attempt: ten at an ordinary event or 15 at Pomona 2.
- Add final qualifying-position points. Use the position band from the applicable event table.
- Add completed-session bonuses. For each completed session, add any award for the driver’s elapsed-time rank; omit a bonus for an uncompleted session.
For example, the arithmetic for an ordinary-event winner who also earns the ten qualifying-attempt points, qualifies first and is quickest in one completed session is 100 + 10 + 8 + 3 = 121 event points. This is an illustration of the published scoring components, not a report of a particular driver’s result; additional completed sessions could add further bonuses if the driver earns them.

What happens if drivers tie in Countdown points?
The current NHRA Mission Foods points page and 2026 media guide provide the reset and scoring tables but do not state a current tie-break sequence for a tie in Countdown championship points. That means the documented material does not establish which driver would prevail in a 2026 tie. For an actual tie or a close standings calculation, consult the applicable current NHRA rulebook or request confirmation from NHRA’s Competition Department rather than treating a past example as current policy.
Best Value
There is a historical example, but it must be kept in its time and class context. In a 2021 article about a Pro Stock Motorcycle title contest, NHRA described head-to-head record during the Countdown as the first tie-breaker, followed by the number of Countdown round wins. That article is useful evidence of the procedure NHRA described for that historical situation; it does not confirm that the same order applies to every class or remains the rule in 2026. The 2021 NHRA article is the source for that example.
Why the Pomona finale can move the standings more
Pomona combines a heavier elimination schedule with larger values for all qualifying components listed by NHRA: qualifying attempts, final qualifying position and session performance. A driver who wins at Pomona receives 150 elimination points, while an ordinary-event winner receives 100. The difference can matter late in the championship because points earned in the finale are added to the totals produced over the preceding playoff races.
The increased scale does not mean a victory is the only factor. A strong qualifying position and fast elapsed times in completed sessions add points before eliminations, while the elimination result supplies the largest single component. To understand a standings swing, compare the complete race total rather than looking only at who won the event.
Quick Recap
Quick reference: the rules that matter most
- The Countdown has six events for Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle; the 2026 season runs from US 131 Motorsports Park to Pomona.
- The top ten after the U.S. Nationals qualify through points position; an additional eligibility route is subject to NHRA’s minimum qualifying-session participation criteria.
- The reset starts the leader at 2,100, second at 2,080, and tenth at 2,000, with ten-point decrements between the listed positions from second through tenth.
- Ordinary-event elimination points run from 100 for the winner to 20 for a first-round loser; Pomona’s scale runs from 150 to 30.
- Qualifying attempt, qualifying position and completed-session performance can all add points.
- The current tie-break order is not stated in the 2026 points materials cited here; the 2021 head-to-head/round-wins example is historical, not confirmation of current policy.
