What the table does—and does not—tell you

How should loads be placed on the tailgate?
Distribute tailgate loads across the width
The 2021 manual instructs: “When applying any load to the tailgate, distribute the weight evenly across the width of the tailgate. This applies to all tailgate types.” Avoid concentrating a load at one side or in one small area; the instruction is to spread it across the gate’s width.
This is a placement instruction, not a capacity figure. Evenly distributing a load does not create a new rating or make an unrated panel suitable for a particular job. It also does not change the step’s combined person-and-cargo maximum. Do not put ramp loads on the inner gate alone

How do you use the step without ignoring the safety instructions?
- Confirm the step arrangement and the truck’s instructions. Use the vehicle-specific owner’s manual for the exact model year and configuration.
- Lower the step fully before use. Chevrolet’s manual says to make sure it is fully lowered.
- Keep hands clear of the hinges while operating the step.
- Keep the combined person-and-cargo load within the step rating. The manual warns that overloading can damage the tailgate system.
- When closing the step, verify that both side latches engage. The manual identifies engagement of both latches as part of proper closure.
These checks go with the step’s use; they do not turn the 375 lb number into a rating for other modes. The manual’s instructions pair the load limit with the configured step and also call out full lowering, hinge awareness, and both side latches when closed.
