There is no reliable universal current price for wireless charging infrastructure at an electric bus depot. The published figures available are historical and differ in geography and scope: an India-specific estimate published in 2019, based on an equipment estimate from 2016, and a U.S. contract figure reported in 2014. Neither establishes what a complete depot would cost today. A useful budget must be built around the fleet, charger and receiver quantities, site electrical capacity, civil work, and local procurement conditions.
Why there is no single dependable price
“Wireless charging” at a bus depot generally means inductive charging: equipment in or at the ground transfers power to a compatible receiver fitted to the bus. The installation is therefore not just a pad purchase. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) describes the system as requiring an in-ground power transmitter that can serve multiple vehicles and a receiver on each vehicle. The number and rating of transmitters, the number of buses to equip, and the electrical and construction work needed at a particular depot all affect the scope being priced.

The public cost examples are too old and too different from one another to produce a defensible present-day price per bus, per pad, or per depot. Their value is as historical reference points, not as current bids. Applying inflation to either figure would not resolve differences in scope, market, power rating, site conditions, or procurement.
What the published cost figures do—and do not—show

These figures use different currencies, dates, geographies, and descriptions of scope. They cannot be added, averaged, or converted into a present-day quote without assumptions the published figures do not establish. In particular, the AEEE total should not be mistaken for a modern, turnkey depot price simply because it includes an ancillary-infrastructure line.

Which parts of the project need to be priced
A buyer should request separate prices for the system components and site work, then confirm which items are included in the proposed total. AEEE’s description of inductive infrastructure includes a special high-frequency transformer, switchgear, cables, protection, SCADA, and vehicle-alignment monitoring in addition to charging equipment. The FTA’s description makes clear that the bus-side receiver is also part of the system. Depending on the depot, a proposal may also need to account for excavation, paving, utility work, commissioning, and ongoing support.
- Ground charging equipment: List the number of transmitter pads and their rated power, along with the associated power electronics. Confirm the proposed simultaneous charging capacity rather than comparing pad counts alone.
- Bus equipment and integration: State how many compatible receivers are included, the buses they fit, and whether vehicle installation or integration work is part of the price.
- Electrical equipment: Identify transformers, switchgear, cables, protection, controls, monitoring, and any other electrical equipment included in the proposal.
- Site and civil work: Separate excavation, foundations or other pad installation work, paving, and restoration from the charger hardware line.
- Grid connection and capacity: Ask the utility and project team to identify any connection work or capacity upgrades, and whether those costs are included, estimated, or excluded.
- Software and commissioning: Specify charging-management functions, configuration, testing, commissioning, and any associated fees.
- Lifecycle support: Request the terms for warranty, maintenance, spares, and service support, including any uptime commitments offered.
- Commercial additions: Show taxes, financing costs, and contingency separately where they apply, and identify any grant or incentive assumptions.
This breakdown prevents an equipment quote from being compared with an installed-project budget as though they were the same thing. It also makes exclusions visible: two bids with identical headline totals may cover different numbers of receivers, different electrical work, or different amounts of civil construction.

What drives the project-specific budget
Fleet size and charging duty
The fleet’s energy needs and the time available for charging determine how many pads and what ratings a project may require, as well as the power the site needs to provide. The cited sources do not establish a universal sizing rule or a price per bus. Give bidders the fleet and operating information needed to develop a project-specific design, and ask them to state the assumptions behind the proposed pad count, ratings, and charging capacity.
Receivers and vehicle compatibility
Each bus needs a compatible onboard receiver. The FTA notes that some funding programs support permanent infrastructure through the charging pad but exclude vehicle-mounted receivers from eligible infrastructure costs. That distinction can leave a material portion of the system outside the grant-supported scope. Before treating a funding award or an infrastructure quote as covering the whole system, check the program’s eligibility rules and the proposal’s receiver line items.

Electrical work and grid capacity
Inductive equipment still needs a site power supply. The FTA notes that depot charging can require high installed capacity and may lead to costly utility upgrades. The final cost depends on what the specific site can support and what the utility requires; the available evidence does not provide a current estimate for any particular depot. Obtain a utility review rather than treating the charger vendor’s equipment price as a complete assessment of electrical costs.
Civil work and depot layout
Installing ground equipment may involve excavation and paving as well as electrical work. The required scope depends on the depot and proposed layout, so it belongs in the site-specific estimate. Also establish how buses will align with the charging equipment: AEEE identifies vehicle-alignment monitoring among the associated infrastructure. A proposal should say whether such monitoring and its related controls are included.

Interoperability and long-term support
The FTA reported that the high-power wireless products in its study were not interoperable across manufacturers, creating a risk of vendor lock-in and stranded assets. This is a procurement issue with potential cost consequences over the life of the depot. Ask which bus receivers work with which ground equipment, what happens if equipment needs replacement, and how support will continue if a supplier exits or discontinues a product. Require the compatibility and support commitments in the procurement documents rather than relying on an informal assurance.
Depot charging versus route charging
FTA materials distinguish depot use from on-route charging. Depot pads may suit a use case where space constraints preclude plug-in charging, while on-route charging can extend range and shorten the time buses need to charge at the depot. Those approaches have different infrastructure scopes. The WAVE “up to 50%” figure concerns a possible reduction in depot infrastructure when using in-route charging; it does not price an in-depot system and should not be used as a discount against a depot quote.

How to get quotes that can be compared
Ask each bidder to price the same project boundary. If the number of buses, pads, or included site works differs from one proposal to another, the totals are not directly comparable. Use a written scope and require bidders to list both included items and exclusions.
- Describe the operating requirement. Provide the fleet size and the charging duty the system must support. Ask bidders to document the assumptions they use to size the installation.
- Define the equipment quantities. Request the proposed pad count and rating, the number of bus receivers, and the stated simultaneous charging capacity. Identify compatible buses and equipment in the proposal.
- Set the site-work boundary. Ask which transformers, switchgear, cabling, protection, controls, excavation, paving, and utility upgrades are included. Have the utility’s requirements and the project’s connection assumptions stated separately.
- Separate one-time and continuing costs. Request clear pricing for hardware, installation, software, commissioning, maintenance, spares, warranty, and service support. Identify taxes, financing, and contingency rather than leaving them implicit.
- Check currency, date, and funding assumptions. Require each proposal to state its currency and quote date, and list any grants or incentives assumed. Verify eligibility for vehicle receivers separately from permanent infrastructure.
- Document compatibility and lifecycle commitments. Ask for written confirmation of vehicle-to-ground-system compatibility, replacement options, support arrangements, and the response if the supplier or product is no longer available.
- Compare like with like. Reconcile differences in quantities, ratings, site work, grid scope, support, and exclusions before comparing totals. Keep unresolved items visible as unpriced scope rather than assuming they are included.
What a realistic estimate should look like
A useful estimate is a project budget with explicit assumptions, not a universal number lifted from an old example. At minimum, it should identify the buses and receivers covered, pad quantities and ratings, available and required site capacity, civil and electrical work, commissioning, and lifecycle support. It should also distinguish confirmed prices from items awaiting utility review or final site design.
If a proposal gives only a charger price, treat it as a component quote until the remaining work is accounted for. If one total is presented without a clear scope, ask for a line-item breakdown and written exclusions. A site-specific utility review and a defined fleet duty are necessary inputs to a credible depot estimate; the historical public figures do not substitute for either.
