There is no dependable universal price tag for owning a low-budget used car. Your real cost depends on the exact car’s condition and resale value, where you live, how much you drive, your insurance profile and whether you borrow to buy it. To estimate the cost, add the purchase and financing costs, insurance, fuel, fees, maintenance and repairs, then account for the car’s likely value when you sell it.
How much does it really cost to own a low-budget used car?
Calculate the total for the period you expect to keep the car, then divide by the number of months or years. Keep the upfront cash requirement separate from the ongoing budget: a car bought with cash still has a purchase cost, even though there is no loan payment.
AAA’s calculator provides a useful framework for estimating costs for a particular used vehicle. It lets users select a state, annual mileage, vehicle year, make, model and trim, and groups costs into depreciation, financing, fuel, insurance, fees, and maintenance. AAA says, “This tool provides generalized information about vehicle ownership costs intended for comparative purposes. Actual ownership costs will vary.” See AAA’s calculator and methodology.
Build a cost estimate for your car
Use one consistent ownership period and driving estimate for every cost. Write down your assumptions so you can change them if the car, loan or expected mileage changes.
#1 Best Overall
- Used Car Paint Inspection:Non-destructive paint thickness measurement helps inspect automotive coatings for signs of repainting, repairs, or uneven paint layers during used car inspections.
- Dual-Technology Detection:Dual technology automatically identifies ferrous and non-ferrous substrates, including Fe, NF, and Zn, for convenient and reliable coating thickness measurement.
- Wide Measurement Range:Measures coating thickness from 0–1500 μm with ±(3%+2 μm) accuracy and 0.1 μm resolution. Supports both μm and mil measurement units.
- Spot & Continuous Measurement: Supports both spot and continuous measurement modes, allowing users to check individual areas or scan multiple sections of a vehicle efficiently.
- Simple Digital Operation: Designed for straightforward operation with a clear digital display and easy power-on-and-measure functionality, suitable for automotive inspections, vehicle maintenance, and paint coating checks.
- Purchase and financing: Record the price, purchase taxes and fees, and down payment. Add loan interest and financing charges if you borrow. When comparing costs, do not count the full loan principal as an expense and then count the purchase price again; principal is repayment of the purchase cost. Show the cash needed to buy the car separately from its economic cost over your ownership period.
- Insurance: Get a quote for the actual vehicle, driver and address. A broad national average cannot tell you what your policy will cost.
- Fuel: Estimate annual miles divided by realistic fuel economy, multiplied by the fuel price where you buy it. Adjust for your city and highway driving mix. AAA’s calculator treats fuel type, price, economy, mileage and driving mix as inputs.
- Taxes and fees: Include purchase taxes and applicable registration or other government fees. These depend on your jurisdiction; account for recurring charges over the time you expect to own the car.
- Maintenance, tires and repairs: Use the car’s condition and service history to estimate scheduled work and wear items, and set aside money for unexpected repairs. AAA includes routine maintenance, unexpected repairs and tires in its maintenance category. A low purchase price does not establish that a car will be inexpensive to maintain.
- Value loss: Estimate the car’s likely resale value at the end of your ownership period and subtract it from what you paid. An older, already-depreciated car may lose less value than a newer one, but depreciation is not automatically zero.
Add the costs across your chosen period and divide by the number of months or years to get an average budget. The result is an estimate, not a promise of what the car will cost: repair timing and resale value can vary, and actual insurance, fuel and fees depend on your circumstances.
Why a new-car average is not a used-car budget
AAA’s headline averages offer context, but they do not answer what a low-budget used car will cost a particular buyer. The figures below cover new vehicles, not a defined class of inexpensive used cars.

| AAA figure | What it measures | Why it is not a used-car estimate |
|---|---|---|
| $12,863 per year, or $1,071.92 per month | AAA’s 2026 average annual cost to own and operate a new personal vehicle, based on five years and 75,000 miles. AAA released the figure on September 15, 2026. | It covers new vehicles, and AAA says actual costs vary by location, driving habits and operating conditions. AAA changed its methodology for 2026 and says the result is not directly comparable with 2025. AAA’s 2026 announcement. |
| $11,577 per year | AAA’s 2025 average for its new-car sample, which used five top-selling models in each of nine vehicle categories. | It is a historical new-car benchmark, not an estimate for an inexpensive used car. AAA’s 2025 fact sheet. |
Neither number should be used as the expected annual cost of owning a low-budget used car. A used-car estimate requires assumptions about the specific vehicle, location, mileage, financing, insurance and condition.
How to compare two used cars fairly
Hold the ownership period and annual mileage constant, then compare the costs that are specific to each car and buyer:

- Purchase price, taxes and financing costs
- An insurance quote for each vehicle
- Expected fuel use at your local price and driving mix
- Registration and other jurisdiction-specific fees
- Condition, service history, likely maintenance and repair exposure
- Expected resale value at the end of your ownership period
AAA’s calculator can help organize several of these inputs, but its estimates are generalized. A car with the lower sticker price is not necessarily the less expensive choice once repairs, fuel, insurance and value loss are included.

Use the vehicle’s service records and inspection findings to decide what repair reserve makes sense; there is no universal reserve amount established for all low-budget used cars. Compare the inspection fee with the potential cost of buying an undiscovered problem, but do not treat an inspection as a guarantee that every defect will be found.
