In the U.S., towing a car typically costs $35 to $125 for 5 miles or less, $125 to $275 for a tow of up to 40 miles, and $600 or more for a trip of up to 100 miles. Those are planning ranges—not national price caps. Your final bill depends on the hookup fee, mileage, vehicle condition, equipment, location, time of day and whether the tow involves an accident or impound.
A normal roadside tow is priced very differently from recovering a wrecked vehicle or retrieving a car from an impound yard. Before the truck arrives, ask for the complete estimated price and confirm where the car is going.

Typical car towing prices
| Tow distance | Typical reported price | What it generally describes |
|---|---|---|
| 5 miles or less | $35–$125 | A short, straightforward local tow |
| Up to 40 miles | $125–$275 | A longer local or regional roadside tow |
| Up to 100 miles | $600 or more | A long-distance tow, often with separate loading and mileage charges |
These figures are approximate ranges reported by Allstate, which attributes them to J.D. Power. They are useful for budgeting, but they are not a guaranteed quote. Rates vary substantially by city, company and type of service.

For example, a company charging a $75 hookup fee and $4 per mile could quote roughly $115 for 10 loaded miles, before any special equipment, storage or after-hours charges. That calculation is only an example; some companies use a minimum charge, flat local rates or a different mileage definition.

What is the average cost to tow a car?
The figure of $109 is often described online as the average U.S. towing cost. It is better treated as a rough historical benchmark than as a dependable current quote. The figure is frequently attributed to J.D. Power, but it is not accompanied by a current methodology, survey date or clear definition of “average.”
A simple local breakdown tow might come close to $109. A vehicle in a ditch, an accident-damaged car, a police impound or a 100-mile trip can cost far more. Ask for a quote based on your specific pickup and destination rather than relying on an average.
What a tow truck bill may include
A quote can contain several separate charges:
- Dispatch, hookup or minimum-service fee: The charge for sending the truck and attaching the vehicle.
- Mileage: This may be calculated by loaded miles, one-way distance or another company-specific method.
- Winching or recovery: Pulling a car from mud, snow, a ditch or another difficult position.
- Special equipment: A flatbed, wheel-lift, dollies or equipment needed for a damaged or disabled vehicle.
- After-hours charges: Some operators charge more at night, on weekends or on holidays.
- Accident-related labor: Cleanup, recovery and extra personnel may be added after a collision.
- Storage: An impounded vehicle may incur a daily yard charge.
- Administrative, gate, release or lien fees: These can apply when collecting a vehicle from a towing yard.
- Taxes: Local and state taxes may be added to the advertised price.
Do not assume that an advertised per-mile rate is the total cost. The base fee alone can make a short tow considerably more expensive than the mileage calculation suggests.
Why some cars cost more to tow
Vehicle size and condition
A heavy truck, large SUV or other oversized vehicle may need a more capable truck. A car with locked wheels, missing wheels, major collision damage or a failed drivetrain may not be suitable for a basic wheel-lift tow. The operator might need a flatbed, dollies or additional labor.
Electric vehicles also have manufacturer-specific loading and towing requirements. A flatbed may be required or strongly preferred for some EVs. Tell the company the make, model, drivetrain and condition of the vehicle before it dispatches a truck.
Pickup location
A car sitting on level pavement outside a repair shop is relatively simple to load. A vehicle in a ditch, snowbank, mud, garage, restricted-access lot or collision scene is not. Recovery may require winching, special rigging, more than one worker or a different truck.

Time and weather
Nighttime, weekends, holidays and severe weather can affect both price and availability. A company may add an after-hours surcharge, while difficult weather can increase the labor and equipment needed to reach the vehicle. Ask whether the quote includes those charges.

Distance
Long-distance towing is often quoted under a different model from a local breakdown tow. Forbes Home reports approximate long-distance rates of $2–$4 per mile, with loading and other fees potentially added.
For a trip of several hundred miles, compare the tow quote with vehicle transport. A car-shipping company may use a pricing model that makes transport less expensive than paying a tow truck to cover the entire distance.
How much does accident towing cost?
Accident towing can cost more than a voluntary roadside tow because the car may need recovery, cleanup or specialized loading. The tow may also be arranged by law enforcement, an insurer or another party rather than by the vehicle owner.
There is no single national accident-tow price. Some states, counties and cities regulate police-directed or private-property towing and publish maximum rates. For example, Palm Beach County’s posted schedule lists private-property impound towing at $146–$151, outdoor storage at $30–$31 per day after the first six hours, and police-directed Class A towing at $182–$188 plus $7.50 per mile. Those are local maximums, not a national standard.
After a crash, ask the officer or insurer:
- Which company authorized the tow?
- Where is the vehicle being taken?
- What is the towing charge?
- When does storage begin, and what is the daily rate?
- What documents and payment methods are required for release?
How much does an impounded car cost?
The initial tow is only part of an impound bill. Storage often becomes the largest charge because it accumulates every day. The total may also include a release fee, gate fee, administrative charge, lien-processing fee, taxes and payment-processing costs.

Call the yard as soon as possible and request an itemized balance. Ask whether storage is charged by calendar day or a 24-hour period, whether the first day is subject to a grace period, and whether the yard is open when you plan to collect the vehicle. Rules and maximum rates differ by state and municipality.
Do not sign a blank authorization form. The National Insurance Crime Bureau recommends confirming the destination and daily storage rate in advance and warns consumers about unsolicited or predatory towing.
Can roadside assistance make towing free?
Roadside assistance can eliminate or reduce the amount you pay at the scene, but only within the plan’s limits. “Free towing” usually means the service is included up to a stated distance and number of calls—not that every tow, destination or extra mile is covered.
| Example plan | Published towing benefit |
|---|---|
| AAA Classic | Generally up to 7 miles, or unlimited miles back to the service facility providing the service |
| AAA Plus | Up to 100 miles |
| AAA Premier | One tow up to 200 miles per membership year; remaining eligible tows up to 100 miles |
| Allstate Roadside Assist | Up to 15 miles |
| Allstate Roadside Advantage | Up to 25 miles |
| Allstate Roadside Elite | Up to 100 miles |
AAA generally limits members to four service calls per membership year, and some regional clubs impose a waiting period before expanded benefits begin. Allstate lists first-year prices of $75, $99 and $150 for the three membership levels above, although renewal pricing and terms can differ. Regional AAA club rules and the exact membership agreement control.
Buying a plan after the car has already broken down may not provide immediate expanded benefits. Check the waiting-period and pre-existing-breakdown rules before depending on a newly purchased membership.

Basic auto insurance does not automatically pay for every breakdown tow. Coverage normally requires roadside assistance or towing-and-labor protection as an optional policy benefit. Even then, the policy may impose a dollar limit, mileage limit, approved-provider requirement or restrictions based on the reason for the tow.

Collision or comprehensive coverage may address a tow connected with a covered accident or loss, but that is different from roadside coverage for a dead battery, flat tire or mechanical failure. Read the policy or call the insurer before authorizing a non-emergency tow if possible.
A newer vehicle may include roadside assistance during its factory warranty period. Some credit cards and separate roadside plans also offer benefits. Verify the specific warranty, card agreement or membership terms; merely having the benefit does not guarantee that every tow is covered.
What to ask before authorizing a tow
- “What is the total estimated price?” Ask for a dollar estimate, not only a mileage rate.
- “What is the hookup or minimum-service fee?”
- “How do you calculate mileage?” Clarify whether it means one-way miles, loaded miles or another measurement.
- “Are winching, equipment, accident recovery or after-hours charges included?”
- “Where exactly will the car go?” Confirm the repair shop, residence or impound yard.
- “What is the storage rate?” Ask about daily storage, gate, release, administrative and lien fees if the car may remain at a yard.
- “Will I receive an itemized receipt?”
At an accident scene, verify the operator’s company name and authorization before handing over the vehicle. An unsolicited driver who arrives before you request a tow may be a legitimate contractor, but you should still confirm the destination and price rather than assuming the service is authorized or covered.
Ways to pay less for a tow
- Check your auto policy, manufacturer warranty, roadside membership and credit-card benefits before paying out of pocket.
- Get two or three quotes when the situation is safe and non-urgent.
- Ask a repair shop whether it has a preferred towing company or can arrange pickup.
- Give accurate details about the vehicle’s size, drivetrain, wheel condition and location so the first truck has suitable equipment.
- Move an impounded vehicle promptly to limit daily storage charges, provided you are legally entitled to retrieve it.
- For a long trip, price vehicle transport instead of assuming a tow truck is the cheapest option.
FAQ
How much does it cost to tow a car 5 miles?
A normal owner-requested tow of 5 miles or less commonly falls between $35 and $125. A hookup or minimum-service charge may make up much of the bill, and winching, after-hours work or special equipment can increase it.
What is the average cost of towing a car?
About $109 is a frequently repeated benchmark, but it is not a reliable current quote for every tow. A short local tow may be near that amount, while an accident recovery, impound or long-distance tow can cost substantially more.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes roadside assistance cover the entire tow?
Only if the tow stays within the plan’s mileage, service-call and eligibility limits. For example, AAA and Allstate plans have different mileage allowances, and extra miles or services may be billed separately.
How can I avoid an inflated towing bill?
Before authorizing service, get the total estimated price, hookup fee, mileage definition, equipment and after-hours charges, destination, storage rate and possible release or administrative fees. Do not sign a blank authorization form.
The Bottom Line
Budget $35–$125 for a short tow, $125–$275 for up to 40 miles, and $600 or more for up to 100 miles. Treat those figures as starting ranges, not fixed prices. The safest way to avoid surprises is to obtain a written total, confirm the destination and storage terms, and check roadside-assistance or insurance coverage before paying.
