There is no single reliable price for owning an imported electric SUV in India. The largest upfront variable is the vehicle’s customs treatment: a 2025 customs notification lists 70% duty for electrically operated vehicles in its above-US$40,000 CIF band and 35% for its other stated band, while a separate 15% rate is tied to a qualifying manufacturer scheme—not a general discount for private buyers. Add GST, state registration and road-tax rules, charging setup and electricity, insurance, servicing, financing and depreciation to estimate the real cost for a specific SUV and ownership period.
What does “cost to own” include?
A useful estimate has two parts: the cash needed to import and put the SUV on the road, and the costs that accumulate during the years you keep it. A vehicle’s overseas list price is not its Indian on-road cost, and the on-road figure alone does not show how much you will spend over time.

For an ownership estimate, choose a holding period—such as the number of years you actually expect to keep the car—and annual kilometres. Then separate the calculation into these lines:
- Upfront landed and on-road cost: the vehicle’s import valuation, applicable customs charges, GST, state registration and any road tax, plus importer or dealer charges that apply to the transaction.
- Charging setup: a compatible home charger, any electrical work or load increase, and charging away from home.
- Recurring ownership costs: electricity, insurance, maintenance and repairs, tyres, financing interest and other relevant fees.
- Cost after resale: the amount paid to own and run the car minus its eventual resale proceeds, if you want a net ownership-cost estimate.
Keep the actual tax bases and amounts distinct. Customs valuation, customs duty, GST, registration charges and importer fees may be calculated differently; adding their percentages together as though they all apply to one price can produce a misleading result. Under section 14 of the Customs Act, imported-goods value includes transportation to the place of importation, insurance and handling as provided in the valuation rules. Read the CBIC explanation of customs valuation.

What is the import duty on an electric car in India?
The 2025 customs notification lists different rates for electrically operated vehicles according to the stated CIF band and whether an import qualifies under a separate provision. CIF means cost, insurance and freight; customs valuation rules govern the value used for assessment. The listed rate is a major input, but it does not by itself tell you the complete landed or on-road price.
| Import treatment in the 2025 notification | Listed customs duty | What a buyer should take from it |
|---|---|---|
| Electrically operated vehicle, CIF above US$40,000, outside the qualifying knocked-down-kit provision | 70% | This is the rate listed for that band and treatment. Confirm the vehicle’s customs classification, valuation and applicable rules for the actual import. |
| Electrically operated vehicle in the notification’s other stated CIF band, outside the qualifying knocked-down-kit provision | 35% | The notification lists this rate for its lower CIF band. Do not infer a complete landed cost from the percentage alone. |
| Import that meets the manufacturing-linked scheme’s terms | 15% | This is a conditional scheme rate, not the ordinary rate available to an individual because the vehicle is electric. |
These rates come from the CBIC’s 2025 customs notification. Its band threshold is expressed in US dollars, while the assessed value and other charges in an import transaction depend on customs valuation and the applicable rules. Before relying on a rate, establish which tariff entry and import provisions apply to the exact vehicle and import date.

Do not assume so. The 15% provision is associated with a manufacturing-linked scheme for approved manufacturers, with conditions that include a minimum US$35,000 CIF value, an investment commitment and an annual import cap. The Ministry of Heavy Industries describes provision for up to 8,000 qualifying completely built-up electric four-wheelers a year and a minimum investment commitment of ₹4,150 crore. Those scheme conditions are not a personal-import entitlement: a private buyer must not calculate a car’s cost at 15% unless the import actually qualifies under the scheme. See the Ministry’s scheme guidelines release.

Why the import route matters
“Imported” can describe quite different transactions: a car supplied through an official distributor, a private import, a new vehicle or a used one, or a vehicle brought in under a qualifying manufacturing arrangement. The route does not automatically establish the applicable duty. The model’s classification, customs value, import form and any relevant scheme eligibility all matter. Ask the importer for the customs basis and itemised charges for the actual vehicle rather than applying a rate from another SUV or another buyer’s invoice.
How GST, state taxes and registration affect the on-road price
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has reported a 5% GST rate for electric vehicles and for chargers or charging stations. That is a useful policy reference, but a quoted GST percentage is not a complete on-road estimate: the transaction’s taxable value and other import and state charges must be established separately. The government’s statement is available in its 30 July 2024 parliamentary response.
Road tax and registration charges depend on the state and the vehicle category. The same government response says the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways advised states to waive road tax on battery-operated vehicles. That central advice does not establish that every state currently waives road tax or all registration costs for every imported electric SUV. Check the current rules with the registration authority for the state where the vehicle will be registered. Do not use another state’s exemption to build your own on-road figure.

How to estimate charging cost at home
Home charging can make running costs easier to estimate, but the electricity bill depends on the specific SUV’s energy use, the distance driven, charging losses where known, and the tariff that applies to the charging connection. There is no single India-wide home-charging price for an imported SUV.
- Set the annual distance. Use your expected kilometres per year, rather than a generic ownership average. If your driving varies substantially, estimate a realistic low and high case.
- Get the model’s energy-consumption figure. Use the exact variant’s official specification and note its units and test basis. A published figure may not match your real consumption; do not substitute a figure from a different model or market.
- Estimate electricity drawn. Multiply expected distance by the vehicle’s energy use per kilometre. If charging losses are available for your setup, account for them; if they are not, do not invent a percentage.
- Apply the relevant tariff. Check the residential or EV-charging tariff that applies to your state, utility and connection. If you use multiple tariffs or charge at public stations, split the estimated energy between those sources and use their applicable rates.
- Add setup expenses separately. Include the charger and installation quote, wiring or electrical work, and any utility-approved increase in load. These are not recurring energy costs.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency provides links to state EV tariff material and a tentative home-charging ownership-cost calculator. Use the relevant state and utility information when available, and treat a calculator output as an estimate based on its inputs rather than a tariff guarantee. See the BEE electric-mobility page.
What can add to the home-charger bill?
First check that the charger is compatible with the SUV and the electrical supply at the parking location. Installation cost depends on the property, parking access, wiring route and available electrical capacity, so obtain a site-specific quote rather than assuming the charger’s purchase price is the full setup cost. A building or office owner can apply to the electricity distribution licensee for higher load to accommodate EV charging stations, according to the Ministry of Heavy Industries. The relevant government information is in its 4 April 2025 release.

Confirm who can approve work on common electrical infrastructure and who pays for it. For a private house, have the installer assess supply capacity, cable route and any required utility process. A public-charging fallback may still be useful if home installation is delayed or unavailable, but its cost depends on the stations and tariffs you actually use.

Insurance, servicing, tyres and resale need model-specific figures
Do not fill the largest unknowns with a generic imported-car premium or a made-up annual maintenance allowance. Obtain a comprehensive insurance quotation for the exact model, variant, city and coverage you want. Ask the insurer how it will value the vehicle and handle parts or repairs; imported-car availability and repair arrangements can affect the practical value of a policy.
Before committing, get written information from the importer or service provider about warranty coverage, service locations, routine maintenance, parts sourcing and expected repair arrangements. An SUV may have a low energy cost but still be expensive to own if parts take time to obtain or specialist support is distant. The available policy facts do not establish reliable current insurance or servicing costs for individual imported models.
Include tyres and other wear items in the estimate using the exact vehicle’s specifications and local replacement quotes. A heavy SUV, its wheel and tyre specification, driving conditions and distance can all affect replacement timing and cost; one vehicle’s experience is not a sound estimate for another.
For resale, use a conservative scenario rather than treating the original purchase price as recoverable. The import route, warranty transfer, local service support, parts supply and future buyer confidence may affect demand. No dependable model-specific resale figure follows from the duty or GST rules, so a precise depreciation number requires evidence for that vehicle and market.

Build a defensible total for your situation
Gather written, vehicle-specific inputs before comparing an imported SUV with another car or with a different import route. Keep the assumptions visible so that a change in tariff, annual distance or insurance quote does not force you to rebuild the whole estimate.
- Identify the exact SUV: make, model, variant, model year, new or used status, country of origin and official specification for energy consumption.
- Document the import transaction: official distributor or private import, import form, CIF valuation and the customs classification and rate confirmed for the date of import. If someone offers the scheme rate, request confirmation that this actual import is scheme-eligible.
- Request the itemised landed and on-road quotation: ask for the valuation basis and separate amounts for customs charges, GST, state taxes, registration and importer or dealer fees. Have the registration-state treatment checked against current rules.
- Price the charging arrangement: establish expected annual kilometres and home/public charging share, check the applicable tariffs, and obtain a compatible charger and installation quote. Include any load-change process or electrical work that applies.
- Collect ownership quotes: get insurance and service information for the exact SUV and city, plus local tyre pricing and financing terms if you will borrow.
- Choose the holding period: estimate recurring costs across that period, keep financing interest distinct from the vehicle’s purchase amount, and subtract resale proceeds only if you have a supportable resale estimate.
When comparing two imported SUVs, use the same state, ownership period, annual distance and charging assumptions. Compare import eligibility and CIF alongside on-road cost; then compare warranty, service reach, parts support, insurance, financing and likely resale on equal terms. A showroom or overseas price comparison alone misses too many cost drivers.
What a buyer can conclude before choosing a model
The dependable starting point is not a single rupee total but a vehicle-specific estimate. The 2025 notification makes customs treatment a substantial upfront variable; the scheme’s 15% rate is conditional, and the government-reported 5% GST does not settle state charges or the full transaction cost. Once the exact import, registration location, annual driving and charging plan are known, written quotes can fill in insurance, service and installation costs that policy rates cannot answer.
