There is no single reliable price for owning a small electric car: the total depends on the exact car, where you live, how much you drive, how you pay for it, your insurance quote, and where you charge. To estimate your own cost, add up depreciation, financing, energy, insurance, taxes and fees, maintenance and repairs, tires, and any home-charging setup. Then compare that five-year total with a similarly sized gasoline car using the same assumptions.
For U.S. context, AAA’s September 2026 study found that EV charging cost less than gasoline fuel across the vehicle categories it examined, but higher depreciation, fees, and financing costs could outweigh those energy savings. The study does not publish a total specifically for small electric cars, so its category averages are context—not a quote for a particular car or household.

What does it cost to own a small electric car?
For a specific driver, the answer is the sum of all ownership costs over a chosen period, less the car’s value at the end. A monthly loan payment is not the full cost: it omits costs such as insurance and electricity, while depreciation—the value the car loses—is a real ownership expense even though it is not a monthly bill.
Use a five-year estimate as a practical comparison, then show the total as a five-year amount, an annual equivalent, and a monthly equivalent. Five years is also the basis AAA uses in its vehicle-cost calculator: its estimates finance a vehicle, assume five years of driving, and include a trade-in at the end. Your result will differ if you keep a car longer, pay cash, buy used, or sell it privately.

AAA’s 2026 comparison covers selected medium sedans and compact or medium SUVs and pickups, not a category specifically called “small electric car.” Its findings can explain how costs behave, but they should not be presented as the cost of owning a small EV.
Which costs belong in the estimate?
Use the same ownership period and accounting method for every car you compare. The table separates the main costs and identifies what you need to find for your own estimate.
| Cost | What to include | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Depreciation | Purchase price, including applicable deal adjustments, minus expected value at the end of the period | Model and trim, purchase price, incentives, age, condition, and resale market |
| Financing | Interest paid over the loan, rather than the full principal a second time | Amount financed, down payment, interest rate, loan term, and credit profile |
| Energy | Electricity for charging, including home and public charging | Annual miles, vehicle efficiency, local electricity and charging prices, and charging losses |
| Insurance | A full-coverage quote that matches the driver and intended coverage | Driver, location, vehicle, coverage, and insurer |
| Taxes and fees | Purchase taxes, registration, and applicable annual fees | State and local rules, purchase price, vehicle, and possible EV-specific fees |
| Maintenance, repairs, and tires | Scheduled service, an allowance for unscheduled repairs, and tire replacement | Vehicle, mileage, use, warranty, and age |
| Charging setup and parking | Home charging equipment and installation, plus paid parking if applicable | Parking access, existing electrical service, equipment, and local labor |
Depreciation and resale value
Estimate the car’s out-the-door price and subtract a realistic value at the end of your ownership period. That difference is depreciation. Do not treat it as zero just because you do not make a payment called “depreciation.” If you trade the car in, use an expected trade-in value; if you plan to sell it yourself, use a value consistent with that plan.

Financing
Count the interest charged on the loan, based on your likely down payment, amount financed, rate, and term. Keep principal out of this line if you already count the vehicle’s purchase price in the depreciation calculation; otherwise you would count part of the car’s cost twice. A cash purchase still has an ownership cost: the car’s purchase price and depreciation remain relevant even without loan interest.
Electricity and fuel
For an EV, estimate annual energy use from the car’s efficiency and miles driven, then apply the prices you expect to pay. If the vehicle’s consumption is stated in kilowatt-hours per mile, the basic calculation is:
Annual charging cost = annual miles × kWh per mile × electricity price per kWh.

For a gasoline comparison, use the same annual mileage and the gasoline car’s fuel economy and local pump price:
Annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon.
These calculations are estimates. The AAA calculator allows users to choose a state, annual mileage, vehicle year, make, model and trim, and to adjust the fuel or electricity price. AAA’s described insurance estimate assumes a driver with at least six years of driving experience, so it may not represent your insurance cost.
Insurance, taxes, and fees
Get a quote for the exact car and your household rather than applying a generic EV premium or discount. Keep coverage limits and deductibles comparable when you check multiple vehicles. Registration and taxes also need local figures: purchase taxes, renewal fees, and any EV-specific charge depend on where you register the car. The available AAA calculator inputs can help tailor a comparison, but state and vehicle-specific costs still need to match your situation.

Maintenance, repairs, and tires
Include routine service, likely repairs outside routine maintenance, and tires. An EV avoids oil changes, but it is not maintenance-free: AAA’s 2023 EV buyer guide notes that EVs still have maintenance, repair, and tire costs. Your allowance should reflect the specific vehicle, the miles you expect to drive, its age, and warranty coverage rather than assuming all EVs have the same service costs.
Home charging and parking
If you plan to charge at home, include equipment and installation if you need them. AAA’s 2023 guide describes a standard 120-volt Level 1 option as slower than a home Level 2 charger and notes that a home unit has an upfront cost. The guide does not establish a current installation price, so get a local quote if installation is part of your plan. Whether a Level 2 home EV charger is suitable depends on home access, vehicle compatibility, and the electrical work required. Include paid parking only if it is a real cost for your use.

AAA’s September 2026 study reported an average home-charging electricity price of 18.0 cents per kWh and an average regular-grade gasoline price of $4.152 per gallon at the time of the study. These are national study inputs, not your local utility rate or pump price. AAA reported that EV charging costs were 66%–70% below gasoline fuel costs across the categories it studied. That comparison is not a guarantee for every driver: annual mileage, vehicle efficiency, local prices, and the share of public charging all affect the result.
The same study found that a medium EV sedan cost 29.1% more per year than a gas-powered medium sedan in its category comparison, attributing the difference to higher depreciation, fees, and financing costs. It does not establish that a small EV costs more than a small gasoline car. AAA also said that its 2026 methodology updates make the results not directly comparable with 2025, so older and newer figures should not be read as a like-for-like trend.

AAA’s overall average annual cost of $12,863 for all new vehicles in 2026 is not a small-EV estimate. Avoid using it as one. The relevant lesson from the comparison is narrower: lower energy costs can be offset by other ownership expenses, so calculate the whole vehicle rather than comparing electricity with gasoline alone.
How to build a five-year estimate for your household
- Choose the exact cars. Record the small EV’s year, make, model, and trim, then select a similarly sized gasoline car. Use current purchase prices for the exact trims and compare cars with the same new-or-used status.
- Set your location, mileage, and time horizon. Use your state or local area, realistic annual miles, and the number of years you expect to keep the car. Apply those same assumptions to both vehicles.
- Estimate the purchase and end value. Record the out-the-door price and estimate the value at the end of year five. Subtract expected resale or trade-in value from the purchase price to calculate depreciation.
- Add financing costs. Use the down payment, amount financed, rate, and loan term you expect to receive. Count interest in the financing line; do not add loan principal again if purchase price and depreciation are already represented.
- Calculate energy using your charging mix. Estimate annual EV kWh from mileage and the vehicle’s efficiency, then apply your local home rate and relevant public-charging prices. For the gasoline car, use the same miles and a local gasoline price.
- Collect household-specific operating costs. Obtain insurance quotes for each exact vehicle with comparable coverage. Add the applicable purchase taxes, registration and annual fees, maintenance, repair allowance, and tires.
- Include setup costs and incentives separately. Add any home-charger equipment or installation you need. Show incentives or tax credits as a separate line only after checking current rules and your eligibility; they are not established for every reader or vehicle.
- Report the results clearly. Add the five-year costs, divide by five for an annual equivalent, and divide by 60 for a monthly equivalent. Show the underlying assumptions so the monthly figure is not mistaken for a loan payment.
AAA’s online calculator can support a reader-specific comparison because it accepts state, annual miles, vehicle year/make/model/trim, and adjusted fuel or electricity prices. Its output is based on five years and a trade-in at the end, so change your interpretation if your ownership plan differs from those assumptions.
How to make the comparison fair
- Match the cars and the transaction. Compare similarly sized vehicles with current prices for the exact trim. Do not compare a new EV with a used gasoline car and then attribute every cost difference to powertrain.
- Use one geography and one driving pattern. Apply the same location, annual mileage, and ownership period to both cars; local electricity, gasoline, taxes, and registration costs matter.
- Keep purchase and financing treatment consistent. Use the same down-payment approach and comparable loan assumptions. If you pay cash for one car and finance the other, identify that difference rather than treating the result as a pure EV-versus-gas comparison.
- Use the same treatment for incentives. Show any purchase incentive or tax credit as a separate, eligibility-dependent adjustment. Do not assume every buyer qualifies or that the same rules apply to every vehicle.
- Model charging honestly. State the home/public charging shares and prices. A home-heavy charging routine and a public-heavy one can produce different results.
- Do not mix new- and used-car assumptions. A used car’s price, likely depreciation, financing, warranty, and repair exposure differ from those of a new car.
What older examples can—and cannot—tell you
Historical examples show why the whole-cost calculation matters, but they are not current quotes. In a AAA/Vincentric example in AAA’s 2023 guide, a 2023 Nissan Leaf S had a five-year total of $44,804, compared with $48,482 for a 2023 Nissan Sentra SR. The comparison assumed 15,000 miles per year, 55% city and 45% highway driving, five years of ownership, and a trade-in. It is a model- and assumption-specific historical result, not a forecast for a current Leaf, a current Sentra, or another small EV.

The page does not show a publication date for that analysis, so treat those values only as a past example, not a present-day energy estimate. Current electricity and gasoline prices and the vehicles being compared may differ.
Which costs are most likely to change the answer?
Once the estimate is assembled, test the assumptions that matter most to your situation rather than adding a generic safety margin. Recalculate with plausible changes to annual miles, purchase price, end-of-period resale value, insurance quote, and charging mix. A change in miles affects energy and use-related costs; a change in resale value directly changes depreciation. If a different loan offer or home-charger installation quote would change the decision, model that as a separate case.
Keep cash outlay and economic cost distinct. A household budget may need the down payment, loan payments, insurance bills, charging costs, fees, and installation cash. A five-year ownership comparison also needs depreciation, while avoiding counting the same purchase principal both as a cash cost and again as depreciation. Showing both views can explain why a car feels inexpensive month to month but is not the lower-cost choice over its full ownership period.
