There is no reliable single annual price for maintaining a four-cylinder motorcycle. The cost depends on the exact model and year, how far and under what conditions you ride, which services come due, local parts and labor prices, and how much work you do yourself. The useful way to budget is to start with your motorcycle’s own service schedule, then price the parts, supplies and shop work it calls for.
Why four cylinders are not enough to estimate the bill
“Four-cylinder motorcycle” describes an engine layout, not a maintenance schedule or a price category. Two motorcycles with four-cylinder engines can differ in model, year, required service, parts and labor. Even for one motorcycle, an annual budget changes with distance ridden: a year that brings scheduled work due will not necessarily cost the same as a year with fewer services.

Riding conditions and the decision to do routine work yourself or pay a dealer or independent shop also affect the total. Local parts prices and labor rates matter, too. Without those details, a general dollar figure would look more precise than the available evidence allows. A model-specific schedule and local quotes give a more dependable answer than a broad average.
Start with the service schedule for your exact motorcycle
Use the owner manual for your motorcycle’s exact model and year. Make a list of its maintenance tasks and the mileage or time intervals attached to each one. Do not borrow another motorcycle’s schedule simply because it also has four cylinders: the cited Honda schedule is an example of how one manufacturer specifies work, not a universal schedule.
#1 Best Overall
- For best performance, follow the manufacturer's recommendations in your vehicle owner’s manual
For example, Honda’s official CBR1000SP/ST maintenance schedule includes engine-oil service and drive-chain service every 1,000 km (600 mi). That interval applies to the model schedule at the linked source; it is not a claim about every four-cylinder motorcycle, nor does it state what either service costs. Honda CBR1000SP/ST maintenance schedule.
The example illustrates why annual distance matters. A rider who expects to cover more distance needs to account for the services that their own manual associates with that use. The manual, rather than a generic annual estimate, identifies which work is due for the bike in question.

Build an annual budget in four steps
- Estimate your yearly distance. Use a realistic estimate of how far you expect to ride during the coming year. If your mileage varies substantially, use a range and check what scheduled work would be due at both ends.
- Map distance to the manual. Starting from the motorcycle’s current mileage and service history, list the tasks that will come due during that year. Include any work specified by the manual that applies to your bike and service situation. Do not assume an item is due merely because it appears in a schedule; check the interval and when it was last completed.
- Price parts and supplies. For the work you plan to do yourself, identify the parts and consumables that apply, using the manual’s specifications and quantities. For Honda’s cited schedule, oil and chain service are examples of recurring tasks, but the source does not provide a price list or a universal product recommendation. Confirm the required item and amount for your own motorcycle before pricing them.
- Get local quotes for outsourced work. Ask a dealer or independent shop to quote the specific scheduled tasks you expect to need. Request a breakdown of labor, parts and supplies so you can compare quotes for the same work. If a task is technical, include the shop charge rather than assuming it is equivalent to routine home maintenance.
A practical planning worksheet can use one row per task, with columns for the manual interval, when it is next due, parts and supplies, DIY or shop, and the local quoted labor charge. Add the costs of the tasks expected during the year; keep work that is not yet due out of that year’s scheduled-service total. This makes the estimate traceable and easy to revise when mileage or a quote changes.

Scheduled maintenance is only one part of a realistic ownership budget. Tires, brakes, chain and sprockets, and other wear items are separate, use-dependent expenses. Their costs and replacement intervals are not quantified by the cited Honda schedule, so do not treat a generic figure or replacement timetable as established for your motorcycle. Check the manual and the condition of the actual parts, then price the items that are relevant to your use.

- C2 Chain Lube Road is a product of MOTUL's racing history, protecting your chain while reducing drag.

It helps to keep two totals: scheduled work expected at your planned annual mileage, and wear-item spending that may arise as components are used. A year with no expected replacement of a particular wear item should not be budgeted as if that replacement were guaranteed; likewise, a worn item should not be omitted just because it is outside a scheduled service list. Ask a shop to identify what is due now versus what is a condition-based recommendation, and request the basis for any proposed work.
DIY work and shop work need different budgets
Doing routine work yourself can change the labor portion of a budget, but it does not make the required parts and supplies disappear. Price the correct materials for your motorcycle and include any supplies required for the job. For work you will outsource, ask whether the quote includes parts, supplies and labor, and whether additional work is excluded.

Do not assume every scheduled task is equally suitable for DIY. In the cited Honda manual, Honda recommends dealer service for technical-level tasks and points readers to the official shop manual for procedures. That guidance is specific to the cited Honda model and does not establish that every task on every motorcycle requires dealer service. For your bike, check its own manual and assess your tools, experience and access to the correct procedure before deciding who should do the work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Compare motorcycles or service quotes fairly
If you are comparing two motorcycles, compare the work each one calls for at the same expected annual distance, not just the engine-cylinder count. Use each model’s own schedule and account for each bike’s current mileage and service history. Then price the work using quotes from the same region and the same type of provider. Comparing one dealer quote with another model’s DIY parts estimate does not reveal the difference in maintenance cost; it mixes different labor assumptions.
When comparing quotes for one motorcycle, give each provider the same task list and ask for the same level of detail. Check whether the quote covers the scheduled task alone or also includes an inspection or additional recommended work. Treat add-on work separately unless it is due under the schedule or needed based on the motorcycle’s condition. The resulting comparison is more useful than comparing headline service-package prices that may cover different work.
What a dependable estimate can—and cannot—tell you
A model-specific schedule can tell you which services to plan for and when they are due. Local parts prices and shop quotes can turn that list into a useful estimate for your own circumstances. The Honda example establishes a 1,000 km (600 mi) interval for oil and drive-chain service on the cited CBR1000SP/ST schedule, but it supplies no service prices, labor rates, or universal annual total. It should not be used to claim what another motorcycle costs to maintain.

Until you have the exact bike, annual distance, due-work list and local prices, the honest answer to “What does motorcycle maintenance cost per year?” is that it cannot be reliably reduced to one figure. Once those inputs are available, calculate the scheduled-work total and keep use-dependent wear items visible as a separate part of the budget.
