There is no single home-charging price for Indiana drivers. Your cost depends on your electric utility and rate plan, the energy your vehicle draws from your home, and how far you drive. Estimate it with your own plan’s applicable price per kilowatt-hour (kWh): home-charging cost = kWh drawn from the home × price per kWh. The statewide figures below provide context, but they are not a substitute for your current tariff or bill.

How to estimate your home-charging cost

For one charging session, multiply the energy drawn from the home by the applicable electricity price. To estimate a month, multiply the miles you drive by your EV’s energy use per mile and then by that price:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Estimated monthly charging cost = monthly miles × kWh per mile × applicable price per kWh

Use the price that applies to the charging hours and rate plan you actually use. If your tariff has different time-of-use prices, calculate the energy in each period separately and add the results. If a utility reward applies, subtract it only after confirming that your account and charging qualify and that you have room under any annual limit.

  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

The vehicle’s energy figure needs care. A dashboard or efficiency figure may describe energy delivered to the battery, while your utility measures electricity drawn at the home. Those are not necessarily identical. Use a figure that represents energy drawn from the home when available. Do not add a charging-loss percentage unless you have a credible source or an explicit assumption for it.

Example calculation—not a quoted Indiana rate

For illustration, suppose a driver travels 1,000 miles in a month, their vehicle draws 0.30 kWh per mile from the home, and their applicable rate is 15 cents per kWh. The estimate is 1,000 × 0.30 × $0.15, or $45 for that month. The mileage, efficiency, and rate in this example are assumptions, not a claim about a typical Indiana driver or a particular utility customer.

The same method works for a session. If a driver draws 30 kWh from the home at an assumed 15 cents per kWh, the energy charge is $4.50. Actual bills can include fixed charges, riders, taxes, and other items, so dividing the whole bill by total usage does not necessarily reveal the incremental price of adding EV charging.

Why Indiana EV charging costs vary

Indiana households do not all pay one uniform residential electricity rate. The utility serving your address and the rate plan on your account matter; so can time-of-use periods, riders, and changes to rates. That is why a statewide average or another household’s bill cannot tell you precisely what charging will add to your own bill.

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission’s 2025 Residential Bill Survey reports standardized residential bills for July 1, 2025 billing. At 1,000 kWh of monthly household use, the average bill among the displayed utilities was $153.69. The listed totals ranged from $60.80 to $233.62. These are standardized total household bills, not the per-kWh marginal price for EV charging or a guaranteed bill for any individual customer.

Utility Standardized bill at 1,000 kWh
Auburn Municipal Electric $60.80
Frankfort Municipal Light & Power $110.06
Anderson Municipal Light & Power $121.55
Duke Energy Indiana $157.98
AES Indiana $158.26
Indiana Michigan Power (AEP) $166.56
CenterPoint Energy Indiana South $220.72
Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) $233.62

All values in the table are total residential bills at the survey’s standardized 1,000-kWh monthly usage level for July 1, 2025 billing. They are useful for seeing how bills differed across the utilities in that survey, but not for ranking the price of adding EV miles. A household’s actual incremental charging cost requires its applicable energy price and plan details.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Indiana Electricity Profile reports an average retail price of 11.38 cents per kWh for 2024. That figure covers all customer sectors, not just residential customers, and it predates later rate changes. It can serve only as broad historical context—not as a current household rate or a reliable substitute for the price on your tariff.

How much might charging add to your bill?

The most useful estimate starts with your driving, not a statewide average. Find your monthly mileage, choose a vehicle energy-use figure that matches the electricity drawn from your home, and apply your plan’s per-kWh price. If your monthly mileage changes substantially, calculate low- and high-mileage cases rather than assuming one fixed charging bill.

Build a personalized estimate

  1. Identify your serving utility and plan. Use your bill or account information; do not assume that a statewide average or a neighbor’s rate applies to your address.
  2. Find the relevant energy price. Check the tariff or plan for the price that applies to your charging hours. If prices vary by time, keep the periods separate in your calculation.
  3. Estimate energy from the home. Multiply your expected monthly miles by the vehicle’s kWh-per-mile figure. Check whether that figure represents energy from the wall or energy delivered to the battery.
  4. Multiply energy by the applicable price. For a time-varying plan, calculate each time period independently and add the charges.
  5. Account for a verified reward, if eligible. Confirm the program’s requirements, qualifying hours, and cap before subtracting any credit from your estimate.

For example, a driver who travels 800 miles and uses an assumed 0.30 kWh per mile from the home would draw 240 kWh for the month. At that driver’s actual plan price, the energy estimate is 240 multiplied by the price per kWh. The 800 miles and 0.30 kWh-per-mile figure are illustrative assumptions; substitute your own data to get a meaningful result.

This estimate isolates the charging energy. Your total bill may not increase by precisely that amount if fixed charges, taxes, or riders change, and the full bill divided by kWh can blend costs that do not rise proportionally with charging. For a practical incremental estimate, use the energy price and applicable charges in your rate plan rather than treating the bill’s average cost per kWh as automatically equivalent.

Is it cheaper to charge an EV overnight in Indiana?

It can be cheaper when your utility plan charges a lower price during overnight hours or when an eligible program rewards charging then. Overnight charging is not automatically cheaper statewide: availability and terms depend on your utility, plan, and eligibility. Check the relevant tariff or program rather than assuming that a rate or incentive offered by one utility applies elsewhere.

AES Indiana’s off-peak reward

AES Indiana describes an Off-Peak Charging Rewards program that pays eligible customers $0.05 per kWh for qualifying EV charging between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., with recurring rewards capped at $100 per year. Its EV rates page also lists a one-time $150 enrollment bonus and up to $100 in recurring annual rewards for the Off-Peak program. These are AES Indiana program terms, not a statewide EV-charging discount. Confirm current enrollment availability, eligibility, and rules with AES before relying on a reward in your budget.

EVIQO Level 2 EV Charger J1772 48A - Hardwired 240V Wall Charging Station
  • WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway.
  • HARDWIRED - PROFESSIONAL INSTALL: This Level 2 charger is hardwired (not plug-in), so a licensed electrician installs it per National Electrical Code. It delivers up to 48A on a dedicated 60A, 240V circuit - enough to charge most EVs fully overnight. Want more speed? You can set DIP switches 4 and 5 to unlock 50A on a dedicated 70A circuit. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that your electrical panel can support the circuit.
  • CONTROL FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start and stop charging, set the charging speed (6-48A), get reminders, and track how much energy and money each charge uses. Requires a 2.4 GHz home WiFi network.
  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

As a scale example, 100 kWh of qualifying overnight charging would earn $5 at the stated $0.05-per-kWh reward, before considering program eligibility and any annual cap. The reward does not by itself establish the utility’s electricity price: calculate the energy charge under the customer’s applicable tariff, then account for a reward only if that customer qualifies.

AES Indiana says its former Rate EVX stopped accepting applications after February 29, 2024, although existing customers remain on it. New customers should not treat EVX as an available enrollment option. AES also says it worked with CLEAResult to provide its programs; this does not change the fact that eligibility and current terms must be checked for the individual program.

What rate changes mean for an estimate

A rate figure has a date and scope. The IURC comparison above is based on standardized July 1, 2025 billing, while the EIA’s 11.38-cent figure reflects 2024 data across sectors. Neither establishes the current marginal charging rate for an unspecified Indiana household.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For AES Indiana specifically, the utility’s rate-review page says the IURC issued an order on June 17, 2026. AES describes customer bill changes phased from July 2026 and January 2027: less than $1 per month beginning in July 2026 and an estimated $8.50 per month beginning in January 2027 for a residential customer using 1,000 kWh per month. Those are AES estimates for that usage level, not statewide changes or EV-specific charges. AES says fuel adjustment charges can change separately and that base rates will not increase again before 2030 under the order.

Because rates and bill components can change, use the current bill and tariff that apply to your account for a personalized calculation. A published statewide statistic can put costs in context, but cannot replace the terms of your own plan.

Does a Level 2 charger change the electricity cost?

AES Indiana says most vehicles can charge from a standard 120-volt outlet, while many customers choose a 240-volt Level 2 charging station for faster charging. A Level 2 unit changes the charging equipment and charging speed; it does not, by itself, establish a different price per kWh. Electricity cost still depends on the energy drawn and the applicable utility rate.

Keep three costs separate when planning home charging:

  • Electricity: the charging energy and any applicable bill components under your plan.
  • Charging equipment: the EVSE hardware you choose. A dedicated Level 2 station is an option, not a requirement for estimating electricity cost.
  • Installation or electrical work: any work needed to install or wire equipment. AES recommends consulting a licensed electrician for Level 2 installation and wiring.

AES’s statement that most vehicles can charge on a standard 120-volt outlet is general utility guidance, not a guarantee that every vehicle, outlet, or household installation is suitable. Check your vehicle’s instructions and have a qualified professional assess installation needs where appropriate.

What to check before trusting a cost estimate

  • Utility and plan: confirm the provider and rate plan for the service address.
  • Rate date and charging period: make sure the energy price applies to the hours when you expect to charge, and note whether the price or bill components have changed.
  • Energy basis: determine whether the vehicle efficiency figure is measured at the home supply or at the battery.
  • Usage assumptions: use your expected monthly miles and a suitable vehicle efficiency figure, and label assumptions if you are estimating before you have actual charging data.
  • Rewards: verify eligibility, qualifying hours, enrollment status, and annual limits. Do not count a possible reward as an assured reduction.
  • Bill composition: distinguish charging energy from fixed charges, riders, and taxes that may not scale directly with EV use.
  • Equipment and electrical work: budget hardware and installation separately from the recurring energy charge.

Once you have a bill and a month of charging data, replace assumptions with the observed energy use and the rates that applied during those charging periods. That gives a more useful household estimate than applying a statewide number to every Indiana driver.
