For a useful public-charging reference, budget AED 0.70 per kWh for AC or AED 1.20 per kWh for DC, plus VAT where applicable. DEWA publishes these rates for Dubai’s EV Green Charger network, and Abu Dhabi Mobility publishes the same headline rates for Charge AD. They are not guaranteed UAE-wide prices: check the selected operator’s current rate and any additional fees before charging.
What does a public charging session cost?
Your bill depends on how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) the charger supplies, the charger’s rate, VAT, and any applicable fees. At the published reference rates, a 20 kWh session costs AED 14 before VAT on AC or AED 24 before VAT on DC. DEWA’s Dubai public-network rates are AED 0.70/kWh for AC and AED 1.20/kWh for DC, plus VAT. Abu Dhabi Mobility publishes the same headline rates for Charge AD.

Use this calculation:
Energy supplied (kWh) × applicable rate per kWh + VAT and applicable fees = session cost
The amount of energy supplied is not necessarily the same as the battery’s full capacity. A car with a 60 kWh battery will not draw 60 kWh every time it plugs in; the session cost is based on energy actually supplied, subject to the operator’s billing terms.

Illustrative cost for 60 kWh
The following examples apply the published rates to 60 kWh of energy. They are arithmetic illustrations, not a claim that a particular car has a 60 kWh usable battery or that charging has no energy losses.
| Public charging type | Rate used | Cost before VAT | Cost including 5% VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC | AED 0.70/kWh | AED 42.00 | AED 44.10 |
| DC | AED 1.20/kWh | AED 72.00 | AED 75.60 |
These VAT-inclusive figures apply 5% to the stated energy cost. They do not include any operator-specific service, overstay, or other fees.
Are these prices the same across the UAE?
No. The AED 0.70/kWh AC and AED 1.20/kWh DC figures are published examples for named networks, not a single nationwide tariff. DEWA lists them for its Dubai EV Green Charger network. Abu Dhabi Mobility announced them for Charge AD, whose launch announcement described a first phase of 1,000 stations at 400 strategic locations across Abu Dhabi Island, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. Those rollout figures describe the announcement, not current availability at a particular address.
Emirates News Agency reported that UAEV adopted the same AC and DC rates, plus VAT, effective January 2025. That report corroborates the announced rates; it does not establish what every charging provider currently charges. An independent operator, hotel, mall, workplace, or building may use different prices or add fees.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Before starting a session, check the operator’s app, the charger display, or the terms shown at the location. Where available, inspect the final invoice for the energy rate, tax, and additional charges. Dubai’s regulation requires independent CPO invoices to break out specified components, including the DEWA red-slab electricity tariff, fuel surcharge, CPO charging fee, applicable overstay or mobile-service charges, and VAT.
How much does home charging cost in Dubai?
DEWA says a home charger can be installed behind the customer’s electricity meter, with the electricity used added to the ordinary DEWA bill at standard residential rates. That means there is no single home-charging price that applies to every household: the customer’s tariff category, consumption, and bill components matter.
DEWA’s billing page lists an October 2026 fuel surcharge of AED 0.060/kWh and says 5% VAT applies to listed tariffs. The surcharge is a dated monthly figure, not a permanent rate. DEWA also lists EV tariff figures of AED 0.64/kWh for AC and AED 1.14/kWh for DC before VAT. Those are EV tariff figures on the page; they should not be treated as the price every household pays for home charging. For a home estimate, use the applicable rate and bill components for your own DEWA account.
Compare home charging with public charging using the actual household electricity cost for the energy used, then compare that amount with the chosen public charger’s live price and fees. Home charging is not automatically cheaper in every case: the result depends on the household bill and the public station’s full charges.

Home charger purchase and installation are separate
The per-kWh cost is a recurring electricity expense; buying and installing a home charger is a separate setup cost. The reviewed DEWA material confirms that a charger can be installed behind the meter but does not state a current combined equipment-and-installation price. Get a quote for the specific property, electrical work, and charger requirements rather than assuming equipment or installation is included in the electricity rate.
For electrical equipment installation in Dubai, DEWA advises customers to use DEWA-approved electrical contractors. Confirm the contractor’s approval and the work included in the quote before proceeding.
Why can the final public-charging bill be higher than the headline rate?
A per-kWh price may cover only the energy component. Depending on the provider and location, the final amount can also reflect VAT, a charging-provider fee, or applicable overstay or mobile-service charges. In Dubai, the regulation describes the components independent CPO invoices should show, including the electricity tariff and fuel surcharge as well as the CPO’s fee.
- VAT: apply the tax treatment shown by the operator. The cited public rates are stated plus VAT.
- Fuel surcharge: a relevant bill component in Dubai; DEWA’s cited AED 0.060/kWh value is for October 2026 and can change.
- Provider and service fees: check for CPO, overstay, or mobile-service charges where applicable.
- Temporary payment holds: DEWA says its public network offers Guest Mode to non-registered users; the amount is held temporarily and the final charge is based on actual consumption.
Because fees and payment handling vary, a headline price is not always the same as the total charged to your card or account.

AC or DC: which should you choose?
On the cited Dubai and Abu Dhabi networks, AC has a lower published per-kWh rate than DC: AED 0.70 versus AED 1.20 before VAT. That makes AC the lower-rate option in those examples when the same amount of energy is supplied. DC costs more per kWh at those rates, but price alone does not determine which charger is suitable. Charging time, station availability, and what your vehicle can accept are separate considerations not quantified by these tariff sources.
Check the connector and charger details for your vehicle, as well as the live rate and fees at the station. Do not assume every public AC or DC charger in the UAE uses the rates published by DEWA or Charge AD.
How to estimate your own charging cost
- Find the energy to add. Use the kWh shown for the session or estimate how much energy you expect to draw. Do not substitute the vehicle’s advertised battery capacity unless you are actually charging that amount.
- Identify the charging location and operator. For public charging, check the app or charger display. For Dubai home charging, review your DEWA tariff category and bill components.
- Multiply kWh by the applicable rate. For example, 20 kWh at AED 0.70/kWh is AED 14 before VAT and other fees; at AED 1.20/kWh it is AED 24 before VAT and other fees.
- Add tax and applicable charges. Follow the rate and fee details provided by the operator or shown on your household bill. For Dubai household estimates, remember that a dated fuel surcharge may apply.
- Check the final bill or invoice. Compare the billed energy and fees with the displayed terms, especially when using a provider outside the named networks.
What the published prices do—and do not—tell you
The strongest official tariff references here cover DEWA’s public network in Dubai and Charge AD in Abu Dhabi. UAEV’s reported January 2025 adoption of the same rates offers corroboration for that operator, but none of these sources establishes one rate for every emirate or charging site. Prices, fees, and station availability are specific to operators and locations and may change.
Recommended Free Tools
For a practical budget, use AED 0.70/kWh AC and AED 1.20/kWh DC as reference prices only where the selected network confirms them. For home charging in Dubai, calculate from the household’s actual bill rather than applying a public-network rate. In either case, use the energy supplied and include tax and applicable fees to estimate the amount you will pay.
