At the U.S. average residential electricity price for 2025—17.30¢ per kilowatt-hour (kWh)—a simple battery-capacity calculation puts a theoretical full charge at about $14.53 for an 84 kWh IONIQ 5 or $10.90 for the 63 kWh SE Standard Range RWD. A 10%–80% charge works out to about $10.17 and $7.63, respectively. These are estimates, not exact charging-session bills: your utility rate, the amount of energy added, charging losses and any fees change the total.
How to estimate the cost
For home charging, start with a straightforward calculation:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Estimated energy cost = kWh added × electricity price per kWh.
For example, at $0.173 per kWh, adding 20 kWh costs about $3.46 before charging losses or any applicable fees. Use the price on your own electricity bill, rather than assuming the national average applies to your household. If your utility uses a time-of-use rate, the relevant price may depend on when the vehicle charges; check your utility’s current terms to determine which rate applies.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports a 2025 annual average residential electricity price of 17.30¢ per kWh. The EIA also reports a 2025 average retail price of 13.63¢ per kWh across all utility customer types. That second figure is not a residential-only rate, so it is not the appropriate national benchmark for a typical household charging estimate.
The EIA’s 2025 state range, from 8.20¢ per kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢ per kWh in Hawaii, likewise covers average retail prices across all customer types. It illustrates how widely electricity prices can vary, but should not be read as a residential-only state range. Your own bill is the more useful input for a personal calculation.

| Battery-capacity basis | Energy quantity used in example | Estimated cost at 17.30¢/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 84 kWh | 84 kWh, or a theoretical full-capacity quantity | $14.53 |
| 84 kWh | 58.8 kWh, equivalent to 70% of listed capacity | $10.17 |
| 63 kWh | 63 kWh, or a theoretical full-capacity quantity | $10.90 |
| 63 kWh | 44.1 kWh, equivalent to 70% of listed capacity | $7.63 |
These figures are calculated from Hyundai’s listed battery capacities and the EIA’s 2025 residential average; they are not measurements of an actual vehicle charging session. In particular, the 10%–80% examples treat the difference as 70% of the listed capacity. They do not establish the precise usable energy in a particular vehicle or the meter reading needed for that state-of-charge change.
Charging losses also mean that the electricity drawn from a home circuit can differ from the energy stored in the battery. Because the examples multiply battery-capacity quantities by the electricity price, they do not include that difference, fixed charges on a bill or other fees. The actual price for a session therefore cannot be read directly from the battery-size calculation.
Why the IONIQ 5 trim changes the estimate
For the 2026 U.S. model year, the battery and EPA-estimated range differ by trim and drivetrain. The following specifications are Hyundai Motor America’s listed figures; range and efficiency are EPA estimates reported by Hyundai, not promises of what every driver will achieve.

| 2026 U.S. IONIQ 5 configuration | Listed battery | EPA-estimated range | Combined efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| SE Standard Range RWD | 63 kWh | 245 miles | 115 MPGe |
| Listed long-range RWD trims | 84 kWh | 318 miles | 114 MPGe |
| Listed long-range AWD trims | 84 kWh | 259–290 miles, depending on trim | 94–106 MPGe, depending on trim |
| IONIQ 5 N | 84 kWh | 221 miles | 78 MPGe |
A larger battery makes the theoretical full-capacity energy quantity higher, but it does not by itself determine what a driver spends over a week or month. That depends on how much energy is added and how far the vehicle is driven. Efficiency matters when comparing energy cost per distance: the listed AWD configurations and the N have lower combined MPGe figures than the listed RWD configurations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHyundai Motor America cautions that “Actual range will vary based on a number of factors, including vehicle options, driving conditions and habits, vehicle and battery’s condition, battery temperature and outside temperature.” Accordingly, EPA range and MPGe figures are useful for comparing listed configurations, not guarantees of personal range or charging expense.
What the estimates mean per 100 miles
A per-distance estimate can help compare trims when the question is not just “What does a charge cost?” but “How much electricity might driving require?” The EPA’s conventional conversion uses 33.7 kWh per gallon-equivalent. Applying that conversion to Hyundai’s listed combined MPGe figures produces approximate energy-use and cost figures below.

| Configuration or efficiency range | Approximate energy per 100 miles derived from MPGe | Approximate cost per 100 miles at $0.173/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| SE Standard Range RWD, 115 MPGe | 29.3 kWh | $5.07 |
| Listed long-range RWD trims, 114 MPGe | 29.6 kWh | $5.12 |
| Listed long-range AWD trims, 94–106 MPGe | Approximately 31.8–35.9 kWh | Approximately $5.51–$6.21 |
These per-100-mile figures are arithmetic estimates from combined MPGe, the EPA conversion and the EIA’s 2025 national residential average. They are not direct measurements of charging energy, and they do not account for charging losses or a driver’s actual conditions. The 2026 IONIQ 5 N is listed at 78 MPGe; the same conversion gives approximately 43.2 kWh per 100 miles, or about $7.47 at $0.173 per kWh, under the same illustrative assumptions.
This comparison explains why a single “cost to charge an IONIQ 5” number is incomplete: trims can use different amounts of energy for the same distance, and the same energy quantity costs different amounts at different electricity rates. For a personal estimate, use your trim’s efficiency as a comparison point, your expected distance, and your own electricity price rather than treating the national-average figures as a forecast.

Home charging: rate, equipment and charging time
Hyundai says the 240-volt AC Level 2 home charger is not included with the vehicle. For the applicable 84 kWh versions, Hyundai lists an estimated 7 hours 20 minutes to charge from 10% to 100% using a 10.9 kW, 240V charger. Hyundai lists 5 hours 40 minutes for the SE Standard Range trim. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed charging times; actual time depends on the charging unit, vehicle and battery settings, starting charge level and temperatures.

Charging time and charging cost are related but different questions. A charger’s power rating affects how quickly energy can be supplied under suitable conditions; the cost calculation still depends on how many kWh are added and the electricity rate. A faster home charger does not, on its own, establish a higher or lower price per kWh.
Anyone considering home equipment should verify compatibility with the vehicle and the home’s electrical setup, as well as installation requirements. Hyundai’s charging information establishes that a Level 2 charger is not included and gives example charging times, but those details do not establish that a particular charger or installation will suit every home.
Public charging does not have one universal price
The 17.30¢ per kWh figure is an EIA national average for residential electricity in 2025; it is not a price quote for public charging. Public charging rates and any associated fees can vary by charging provider and location, and the available information does not establish a universal public-charging price for the IONIQ 5. Do not use the home-rate calculation as a prediction of a public charging session unless the provider’s actual pricing matches that rate and its fees are also accounted for.
Recommended Free Tools
To estimate a particular public session, check the provider’s current price and fee terms, then apply the per-kWh rate to the energy added if that is how the session is billed. If pricing is presented differently, use the provider’s stated billing basis. The battery-size examples above remain useful as energy-quantity illustrations, but not as a substitute for the provider’s price.
How to calculate your own charge
- Identify your configuration. Use the vehicle’s trim to determine whether the relevant listed capacity is 63 kWh for the 2026 SE Standard Range RWD or 84 kWh for the listed long-range trims and IONIQ 5 N.
- Find the applicable electricity price. For home charging, use your utility bill or the relevant time-of-use rate for the charging period. For public charging, use the provider’s current rate and fee terms instead of the residential average.
- Estimate the energy added. If you know the kWh added during the session, multiply that amount by the applicable price per kWh. If you only want a simple capacity-based illustration, multiply the relevant listed capacity by the rate, while recognizing that it is not an exact session prediction.
- Account for what the simple calculation leaves out. Charging losses, fixed bill charges and provider fees can make the amount paid differ from the basic multiplication. Do not treat a theoretical full-capacity or 10%–80% calculation as a measured utility-meter result.
For example, a driver using the 2025 EIA residential average can estimate a 10%–80% capacity-based addition at about $10.17 for an 84 kWh configuration or $7.63 for a 63 kWh configuration. Replacing $0.173 with the rate on that driver’s bill gives a more relevant estimate, though the result remains an illustration until actual energy drawn and applicable charges are known.
