Get a diagnosis before approving replacement
A car that will not start does not necessarily have a failed starter. RepairPal describes checking the starting and charging systems and visually inspecting the vehicle before diagnosing the problem. Ask the shop to explain its findings and identify any related repair separately; the general replacement estimate does not automatically cover that work.

How to compare shop quotes
Ask for an itemized estimate and compare quotes only when they cover the same vehicle configuration and work. A lower headline total may leave out charges or work included in another quote.
- Diagnosis and any diagnostic charge
- Starter type, brand or part number, and confirmed fitment
- Parts and labor listed separately
- Taxes, shop fees, and towing, if applicable
- Any recommended related repair, listed separately
- Warranty coverage for both the part and labor

Check that the replacement starter is correct
Starters that look alike or physically fit more than one vehicle can have different solenoid designs. RepairPal cautions that the correct part number matters. Have the shop confirm the part’s fitment for your vehicle, and request the brand or part number on the estimate.

RepairPal says replacement is a DIY project on many models, but the procedure is not the same for every car. Disconnecting the battery first reduces the risk of electrical shock or component damage. Some older vehicles use shims to align the starter; incorrect alignment can damage the flywheel or other components.
