For the 2026 MotoGP season, Saturday qualifying sets the starting grid for both the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. The Sprint is a shorter Saturday race, worth points to the top nine finishers; the Sunday Grand Prix awards points to the top 15. A Sprint result does not change the Grand Prix grid. MotoGP has announced a different format for 2027, with separate qualifying sessions and grids for the two races.

What happens on a standard MotoGP weekend in 2026?

A MotoGP weekend has two races that award championship points: the Saturday Sprint and the Sunday Grand Prix. The qualifying sessions take place on Friday and Saturday morning. In 2026, their result determines the grid for both races, so riders start each one from the same position even if the Sprint changes the championship standings or a rider’s form.

The usual sequence is Friday practice, Saturday practice and qualifying, the Saturday-afternoon Sprint, then a Sunday warm-up and Grand Prix. The precise event timetable can vary by Grand Prix; “usual” describes the standard pattern, not a guarantee that every event runs at identical local times.

This means the weekend has two distinct kinds of result to track: qualifying establishes where riders line up, while each race establishes its own finishing order and points. The Sprint adds a second points-paying race to the weekend, but it does not replace the full Sunday Grand Prix.

2026 weekend at a glance

Day Session Length What it does
Friday morning Free Practice 1 (FP1) 45 minutes First practice session of the weekend.
Friday afternoon Practice 60 minutes The ten fastest riders qualify directly for Q2.
Saturday morning Free Practice 2 (FP2) 30 minutes Practice before qualifying.
Saturday morning Qualifying 1 (Q1) 15 minutes The fastest two riders advance to Q2.
Saturday morning Qualifying 2 (Q2) 15 minutes Sets the first 12 places on both race grids.
Saturday afternoon, usually Sprint Approximately half the Sunday race distance A separate race awarding points to the top nine.
Sunday Warm-up, then Grand Prix Warm-up length not stated in the cited 2025 explainer The full-length race awards points to the top 15.

Session lengths and the qualifying progression above are given in MotoGP.com’s 7 May 2025 qualifying explainer. The approximate Sprint distance and its introduction to the championship calendar in 2023 are described in MotoGP.com’s 3 November 2025 Sprint explainer.

How does MotoGP qualifying work in 2026?

Friday’s 60-minute Practice is the session that determines which riders can bypass Q1. Its ten fastest riders go straight into Q2. Everyone else has to compete in Q1 for one of the two remaining Q2 places. Saturday’s 30-minute FP2 comes before qualifying, but the stated route into Q2 is based on Friday Practice, not FP2.

From Friday Practice to Q2

  1. Ride Friday’s 60-minute Practice. The ten fastest riders earn direct entry to Saturday’s Q2.
  2. Use Q1 if outside the top ten. Saturday’s 15-minute Q1 is the route to Q2 for riders who did not qualify directly.
  3. Advance by finishing in Q1’s top two. Those two riders join the ten direct qualifiers in Q2.
  4. Set the front 12 in Q2. The 15-minute Q2 determines grid positions 1 through 12.
  5. Fill the remaining places from Q1 results. Riders who do not advance from Q1 occupy 13th onward according to their Q1 performance.

The practical consequence is that one Friday session can decide whether a rider gets a chance to compete for the front 12 places in Q2. But the qualifying system still gives riders outside that direct-entry group a route into Q2: they must finish first or second in Q1. A rider who does not make the Q1 top two cannot improve their grid position in Q2 because they do not take part in that session.

For instance, a rider who is among Friday Practice’s ten fastest is already assured a Q2 place, while a rider outside that group must earn one of the two transfers through Q1. Q1 also remains relevant to the rest of the grid: riders who do not advance are ordered from 13th onward by their Q1 performance. So qualifying is not simply a contest to decide pole position; it allocates the first 12 positions through Q2 and the following positions through Q1.

One qualifying result, two 2026 grids

Q2 and Q1 together establish the starting order for both Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix. There is no separate Saturday Sprint qualifying session in the 2026 format described here. Nor does the Sprint itself set or revise Sunday’s order: the Grand Prix grid remains the one produced by Saturday-morning qualifying.

That distinction matters when following a weekend. A rider can win the Sprint and score points, but the win does not move that rider to the front of Sunday’s grid. Likewise, a poor Sprint does not by itself push a rider back for the Grand Prix. The two races are separate contests that share a grid-setting qualifying result.

In practical terms, a Saturday Sprint result answers who finished where in the Sprint and how many Sprint points they earned. It does not answer where those riders will start the Grand Prix. For the 2026 Sunday starting order, look back to qualifying, not to the Sprint classification.

What is the MotoGP Sprint, and how is it different from the Grand Prix?

MotoGP introduced the Sprint as a regular part of Grand Prix weekends in 2023. It is held on Saturday and runs for approximately 50% of the distance of the Sunday race, according to MotoGP.com’s 3 November 2025 explainer. It is a race in its own right, with championship points awarded by finishing position; it is not a qualifying session or a substitute for the Grand Prix.

Finishing position Saturday Sprint points Sunday Grand Prix points
1st 12 25
2nd 9 20
3rd 7 16
4th 6 13
5th 5 11
6th 4 10
7th 3 9
8th 2 8
9th 1 7
10th No points 6
11th No points 5
12th No points 4
13th No points 3
14th No points 2
15th No points 1

The scoring difference is straightforward: the Sprint awards points to its top nine finishers, while the Grand Prix awards points to its top 15. A Sprint winner earns 12 points; a Grand Prix winner earns 25. Those values are the standard scoring figures in MotoGP.com’s Sprint explainer of 3 November 2025 and championship explainer of 3 July 2025.

The contrast affects riders beyond the winner, too. Ninth place is the final points-paying position in the Sprint and earns one point; tenth earns none there. In the Grand Prix, tenth is worth six points, and the points continue through 15th, which earns one. The same finishing place therefore does not always have the same points value in the two races.

How to calculate a weekend’s points

Add the points earned in each race. A rider who wins both earns 12 for the Sprint plus 25 for the Grand Prix, for a maximum of 37 points across the two races. For example, a Sprint winner who finishes third on Sunday scores 12 + 16 = 28 points. A rider finishing tenth in the Sprint receives no Sprint points, but can still score in the Grand Prix by finishing in the top 15.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Another way to check the total is to read each race’s result against its own column in the table, then add the two figures. A rider who finishes ninth in both races earns one Sprint point and seven Grand Prix points, for eight in total. The Sunday result can add to a rider’s weekend haul even if the rider finishes outside the Sprint’s top nine, because the Grand Prix has points available down to 15th.

The races have separate finishing orders and separate points awards. A rider’s Saturday result is not carried over as a Sunday bonus, and points are not awarded simply for taking part in qualifying. Only finishing positions listed in the scoring table earn points under the schedule described in the cited MotoGP championship explainers.

What changes for MotoGP in 2027?

On 7 October 2026, MotoGP announced that a new weekend format would begin in the 2027 season. The key change for fans is that Saturday’s qualifying will no longer produce a single grid for both races: the Sprint and Grand Prix will have distinct grids, each set by its own qualifying sessions. That change is announced for 2027; it is not the format in force during 2026.

Announced 2027 session outline

Day Announced session Length Grid it sets or purpose
Friday FP1 45 minutes Practice.
Friday FP2 30 minutes Practice.
Friday Sprint qualifying 15 minutes Sets the Saturday Sprint grid.
Saturday FP3 20 minutes Practice.
Saturday Grand Prix Q1 and Q2 Lengths not stated in the announcement summary Sets the Sunday Grand Prix grid.
Sunday MotoGP Grand Prix Not stated in the announcement summary Follows the Moto3 and Moto2 races.

MotoGP’s 7 October 2026 announcement says Q1 will include all riders, with the top 12 progressing to Grand Prix Q2. The announced outline is a format overview, not a complete set of sporting regulations; details beyond those stated should not be inferred from the session list. MotoGP Deputy CEO Carlos Ezpeleta described the plan by saying, “Fans can look forward to an even more spectacular weekend as Sprint qualifying arrives next season”. That is MotoGP’s promotional description of the change, rather than an independent assessment of its effects.

The 2026 and 2027 grid-setting difference

Season How the Sprint grid is set How the Grand Prix grid is set Does the Sprint result set Sunday’s grid?
2026 Saturday Q1 and Q2. The same Saturday Q1 and Q2 result. No.
2027, as announced on 7 October 2026 Friday Sprint qualifying. Saturday Grand Prix Q1 and Q2. No; it has its own qualifying route.

In short, 2026 has one qualifying outcome shared by two race grids; the announced 2027 arrangement separates those outcomes. The 2027 notice changes how riders qualify for each race, but the cited announcement summary does not establish a change to the points table. The table above therefore compares grid-setting, not scoring.

The announced Friday 2027 schedule places FP1, then a 30-minute FP2, then 15-minute Sprint qualifying, which determines the Sprint grid. On Saturday, a 20-minute FP3 precedes Grand Prix Q1 and Q2, which determine the Grand Prix grid. The clearest season-to-season distinction is therefore which qualifying result you use: one shared outcome in 2026, separate Sprint and Grand Prix outcomes in the announced 2027 format.

How to follow a race weekend without mixing up the results

When a rider’s grid position or points are being discussed, identify which session or race the figure refers to. A Q2 position determines a place on both 2026 grids; a Sprint finishing place determines Saturday’s race points, not Sunday’s grid; and the Grand Prix has its own Sunday finishing order and points award. Keeping those three results distinct makes it easier to read a weekend’s standings correctly.

  • For starting position: check Saturday’s qualifying result in 2026.
  • For Saturday points: check the Sprint finishing position; only the top nine score.
  • For Sunday points: check the Grand Prix finishing position; the top 15 score.
  • For a weekend total: add that rider’s Sprint and Grand Prix points. The maximum available from winning both is 37.
  • For 2027: check whether a grid is for the Sprint or the Grand Prix, because separate qualifying sessions will set them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does MotoGP qualifying work in 2026?

The ten fastest riders in Friday’s 60-minute Practice go directly to Saturday’s Q2. The rest contest 15-minute Q1, and its two fastest riders join them in Q2. Q2 sets the first 12 grid places; riders who do not advance from Q1 fill places from 13th onward according to their Q1 performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do MotoGP Sprint results affect the Sunday grid in 2026?

No. Saturday’s Q1 and Q2 result sets both the Sprint and Grand Prix grids. A Sprint win can earn points, but it does not move a rider up the Sunday starting order, and a poor Sprint does not by itself move a rider back.

How many points do MotoGP Sprint and Grand Prix winners get?

The Sprint winner scores 12 points and the Sunday Grand Prix winner scores 25. A rider who wins both can earn 37 points over the weekend. Sprint points go to the top nine; Grand Prix points go to the top 15.

What is the main difference between a MotoGP Sprint and the Grand Prix?

The Sprint is held on Saturday and runs for approximately half the Sunday race distance. It awards points to the top nine, with 12 for first place. The Sunday Grand Prix is the full-length race and awards points to the top 15, with 25 for first place.

What changes to MotoGP qualifying in 2027?

MotoGP announced on 7 October 2026 that the Sprint and Grand Prix will have separate grids. The announced schedule puts 15-minute Sprint qualifying on Friday to set the Sprint grid, then Grand Prix Q1 and Q2 on Saturday to set the Sunday grid. This is the announced 2027 format, not the 2026 arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For 2026, one Saturday qualifying result sets both MotoGP race grids; the Sprint changes points totals, not Sunday’s starting order. The Sprint is about half the Sunday distance, with points for the top nine, while the Grand Prix scores the top 15. MotoGP’s format announced for 2027 introduces separate Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying sessions and grids.
