A 2026 MotoGP premier-class weekend has two races: a Saturday Sprint and a full-length Sunday Grand Prix. Friday’s timed Practice determines which 10 riders go straight to Q2; the remaining riders contest Q1 for the last two Q2 places. Qualifying sets the starting grid for both races, so Saturday’s Sprint result does not change the Sunday grid.
The format makes the Friday afternoon session particularly important: it shapes Saturday qualifying before any race takes place. The Sprint adds a second points-scoring opportunity, but it is not a substitute for the Sunday Grand Prix and does not determine its starting order.

What happens across a MotoGP weekend?
The 2026 format moves from practice to qualifying and then to two points-scoring races. Friday’s sessions provide setup time and determine who must contest Q1. Saturday’s qualifying establishes the grid for both races, followed by the Sprint. Sunday has a brief warm-up before the full-length Grand Prix.

MotoGP’s 2025 weekend explainer gives the 2026 session pattern and durations above. The exact time shown for a session on a local timetable can differ from one event to another.
The order matters. FP1 and Friday Practice happen before the qualifying sessions, while FP2 gives riders another practice period on Saturday morning before Q1 and Q2. After qualifying, the Sprint is the first race of the weekend. Sunday’s 10-minute warm-up is a preparation session, not another race or a replacement for qualifying.
How Friday Practice determines Q2 entry
The Friday afternoon Practice session is more than another chance to work on setup: it is the gateway to the qualifying session that decides the leading grid places. The 10 fastest riders on the combined timesheet from Friday’s timed Practice qualify directly for Q2. Riders outside that top 10 have to start Saturday in Q1.
This gives qualifying two routes into Q2. Ten riders have already secured a place through Friday’s Practice; in Q1, everyone else has a 15-minute session in which to chase one of the two remaining places. Q1 therefore determines both who gets to compete for the top grid positions in Q2 and how the non-advancing Q1 riders are ranked among the lower grid places.
That makes Friday’s result significant even though it is not itself a race. A rider inside the top 10 avoids the additional qualifying stage and goes directly to Q2. A rider outside it still has a route to Q2, but must make the most of Q1 to earn one of its two transfer places. Every rider continues to have a qualifying position determined through the session they contest.
Q1: two places are available
The two fastest Q1 riders advance to Q2. The other Q1 riders do not transfer and take lower grid positions according to their Q1 performance. In the official MotoGP qualifying explainer, a rider’s fastest lap in the session they contest determines their qualifying position.

Q1 is therefore both a progression session and a ranking session. The two riders who advance join the direct entrants in Q2, where they can contest the leading grid positions. For the rest of the Q1 field, the session still matters because their Q1 performance establishes their qualifying positions in the lower part of the grid.

Q2 consists of the 10 riders who earned direct entry on Friday and the two riders who progressed from Q1. They contest the leading grid positions. This is why the Friday Practice result matters beyond practice itself: a rider outside the top 10 must use Q1 to reach the session that decides the first 12 places.
In practical terms, the Friday Practice top 10 and the Q1 top two make up a 12-rider Q2 field. Qualifying then provides the order used to form the grids for both races in 2026. The Q1 riders who do not advance are not left without a starting place; their qualifying position is based on their performance in Q1.
What does qualifying set in 2026?
In the 2026 format, the same qualifying result sets the starting grid for both the Saturday Sprint and Sunday’s full-length Grand Prix. The Sprint is a separate race, but it does not create a second qualifying order for Sunday. Winning, losing or not finishing Saturday’s Sprint does not, by itself, move a rider up or down the Grand Prix grid; that starting position remains the one earned in qualifying, subject to any penalties or official changes.
That distinction is useful when watching the weekend: the grid shown after Saturday qualifying applies to both races under the 2026 rules. Do not read the Sprint finishing order as the Sunday starting order.
For example, a rider who starts the Sprint from a particular qualifying position retains that same earned position on the Grand Prix grid unless a penalty or official change applies. A strong Sprint result can add championship points, but it does not improve that rider’s Sunday grid slot. The two races share the qualifying result as their grid source, while their race results and points are separate.

How the Sprint differs from the Sunday Grand Prix
The Sprint, introduced in the 2023 season, is the shorter Saturday race. It covers approximately 50% of the full race distance and typically lasts around 20 minutes, although the number of laps and elapsed time depend on the circuit. The Sunday Grand Prix is the full-length race. Both award championship points, but they award them to different numbers of finishers and use different scales.
| Feature | Saturday Sprint | Sunday Grand Prix |
|---|---|---|
| Day and role | Saturday; shorter points-scoring race | Sunday; full-length premier-class race |
| Distance | Approximately half of the full race distance | Full race distance |
| Scoring places | First nine finishers | First 15 finishers |
| Points, in finishing order | 12, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 | 25, 20, 16, 13, then 11 down to 1 for fifth through 15th |
| 2026 grid source | Qualifying | Qualifying |
The Sprint pays 12 points for first, 9 for second and 7 for third; fourth through ninth receive 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. The Sunday race pays 25 for first, 20 for second, 16 for third and 13 for fourth; fifth through 15th receive 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. A result in either race contributes to the championship, but only qualifying sets the two race grids in 2026.
The differences are easiest to keep straight by comparing day, distance, points and grid source. Saturday’s Sprint is the shorter race and awards points to nine finishers. Sunday’s Grand Prix covers the full race distance and awards points to 15. The first-place reward is 12 points in the Sprint and 25 in the Grand Prix, and the Sprint’s third-place score is 7 rather than the Grand Prix’s 16.

What does “Grand Prix” mean?
“Grand Prix” can refer to the entire event or weekend, as in a particular round of the championship. It can also mean the Sunday full-length premier-class race, in contrast with the Saturday Sprint. When a schedule or conversation says “the Grand Prix,” use the surrounding context to tell whether it means the whole event or that specific race.
For instance, a reference to a Grand Prix weekend may include the practice sessions, qualifying, Sprint and Sunday race. A reference to the Grand Prix race usually distinguishes the Sunday full-distance contest from Saturday’s Sprint. This terminology can be ambiguous because the event and its principal Sunday race share the same name.

What changes in 2027?
MotoGP announced a different weekend format on 7 October 2026, for the 2027 season. It separates the Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying processes, so there will be separate grids for the two races. These are announced changes, not part of the 2026 format described above.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Day | Announced 2027 session | Length | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday | FP1 | 45 minutes | Free practice. |
| Friday | FP2 | 30 minutes | Replaces the current 60-minute timed Practice and does not determine entry into other sessions. |
| Friday | Sprint qualifying | 15 minutes | Open to all riders and sets the Sprint grid. |
| Saturday | FP3 | 20 minutes | Additional free practice. |
| Saturday | Grand Prix Q1 and Q2 | 15 minutes each | Separate Grand Prix qualifying: all riders contest Q1, and its top 12 advance to Q2. This qualifying sets the Grand Prix grid. |
| Sunday | Pitlane opening for sighting laps | 10 minutes | Replaces MotoGP warm-up track time with a pitlane opening before the Grand Prix. |
The key practical change is that a rider’s Friday Sprint qualifying sets the Saturday Sprint grid, while separate Saturday Grand Prix qualifying sets the Sunday race grid. Friday FP2 no longer decides who enters other sessions. MotoGP’s announcement gives the new timings and session structure; the table describes the announced plan for 2027.
The 2027 format should not be confused with the current arrangement. In 2026, Friday’s 60-minute timed Practice decides which 10 riders go straight to Q2, Q1 supplies two more Q2 riders, and that qualifying process sets both grids. Under the announced 2027 structure, Friday FP2 is 30 minutes and does not determine entry to other sessions. Sprint qualifying is open to all riders and sets the Sprint grid; Saturday’s separate Grand Prix qualifying sets the Grand Prix grid.
There is also a Sunday preparation change in the announced plan: MotoGP warm-up track time becomes a 10-minute pitlane opening before the Grand Prix for sighting laps. It is not the same as the 10-minute Sunday morning warm-up in the 2026 schedule. If following a particular season, check which format applies rather than carrying the 2027 timetable back into 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to follow a particular race weekend
Use the official timetable for the event to confirm local session times. The standard format gives the order and durations, but it does not establish one universal start time for every Grand Prix. Event circumstances and local clock times can make the published schedule differ from round to round.
If you are tracking the sporting consequences, note three separate things: Friday Practice determines direct Q2 entry in 2026; Q1 and Q2 establish qualifying positions; and Sprint and Grand Prix results award their own championship points. Keeping those outcomes separate avoids the most common confusion: the Sprint matters to the championship, but it does not set the Sunday starting grid.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a MotoGP weekend work across the sessions?
In the 2026 premier-class format, Friday has a 45-minute FP1 and 60-minute timed Practice. Saturday has a 30-minute FP2, 15-minute Q1 and 15-minute Q2, followed by the Sprint. Sunday has a 10-minute warm-up and the full-length Grand Prix. Check the event’s official timetable for local start times.
How does Friday Practice affect MotoGP qualifying?
The 10 fastest riders on Friday’s timed Practice combined timesheet go directly to Q2. Riders outside the top 10 contest Q1, where the two fastest advance to Q2. The other Q1 riders are ranked in the lower grid positions according to their Q1 performance.
Does the MotoGP Sprint determine the Sunday grid?
No. In 2026, qualifying sets the starting grid for both the Saturday Sprint and Sunday Grand Prix. The Sprint result contributes championship points but does not change the Sunday grid, subject to any penalties or official changes.

The first nine finishers score: 12 points for first, 9 for second, 7 for third, then 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for fourth through ninth.
How is Sprint scoring different from Grand Prix scoring?
The Sprint awards points to the first nine finishers, with 12 for first. The full-length Sunday Grand Prix awards points to the first 15: 25, 20, 16 and 13 for the top four, then 11 down to 1 for fifth through 15th.
What is changing for MotoGP in 2027?
MotoGP announced on 7 October 2026 that Friday will have a 45-minute FP1, 30-minute FP2 that does not determine entry to other sessions, and 15-minute Sprint qualifying open to all riders. Sprint qualifying sets the Sprint grid. Saturday adds a 20-minute FP3 and separate Grand Prix Q1 and Q2, with all riders contesting Q1 and its top 12 advancing to Q2 for the Grand Prix grid. Sunday warm-up track time is replaced by a 10-minute pitlane opening for sighting laps.
Does “Grand Prix” mean the whole weekend or just Sunday’s race?
It can mean either. “Grand Prix” may refer to the whole championship event or weekend, or to the Sunday full-length premier-class race in contrast with Saturday’s Sprint. Context makes clear which meaning is intended.
The Bottom Line
For the 2026 MotoGP premier class, Friday Practice determines who goes directly to Q2, Saturday qualifying sets both race grids, and the Sprint adds a separate points-scoring race without changing Sunday’s starting order. The announced 2027 format separates Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying, so its timetable and grids are different.
