The usable capacity depends on the model year, market, trim, second-row bench or captain’s chairs, the exact child restraints and whether the third row is occupied. In a 7-seat 2025 layout, Kia provides lower LATCH anchors in the second-row left and right outboard positions; the 8-seat layout adds a second-row center anchor position. Those are anchor locations, not a guarantee that three particular car seats will fit side by side.
The best published hands-on check found that three restraints did not fit together in the second row of a 2024 gasoline Sorento X-Line with captain’s chairs. That vehicle was not a Hybrid and did not test the 2026 Hybrid’s standard bench, so use the result as a warning about that configuration—not as a universal two-seat limit. Count only restraints that install correctly, leave usable buckles and access, and comply with both the Kia and restraint-maker instructions.

The practical answer: plan for a fit test, not a fixed seat count
A Sorento Hybrid can have two, three or more child restraints installed across its cabin depending on the seating layout and restraint dimensions. The number of seating positions printed in a brochure does not tell you how many bulky rear-facing seats, harnessed convertibles or boosters can coexist safely.

Three questions determine the real answer:
- Which second-row layout does your vehicle have?
- Which lower-anchor and tether positions does Kia provide for that layout?
- Do your specific restraints install firmly without blocking neighboring buckles, front-seat space or third-row access?
Kia permits a child restraint to be secured with lower anchors or a seat belt when the restraint manufacturer allows that method. A seat-belt installation still has to meet the restraint maker’s routing and tightness requirements; an empty LATCH position is not permission to use an anchor Kia does not provide.

Second-row layouts in current Sorento Hybrids
Kia’s U.S. page for the 2026 Sorento Hybrid describes a standard second-row bench with captain’s chairs available on certain configurations. The exact combination is trim- and market-dependent, so inspect the vehicle’s window sticker and owner’s manual rather than assuming every Hybrid has the same interior.
J.D. Power’s 2026 Sorento Hybrid review describes the EX with a bench and seven-person capacity, while other configurations can use captain’s chairs. A bench creates a possible center seating position; captain’s chairs separate the second row and usually leave a walk-through, but they eliminate a center position for a restraint.

A bench therefore makes a three-across attempt possible, but it does not prove that three seats fit. Car-seat shells vary substantially in width, base shape, recline angle and buckle clearance.

Kia’s wording is explicit: “For the 7 passenger vehicle, LATCH anchors have been provided in the left and right outboard rear seating positions.” The manual is describing lower anchors, not banning a properly approved seat-belt installation in another seating position. Always check the restraint’s instructions for whether a belt installation is allowed in that position.
LATCH weight limit
Kia gives a recommended maximum combined weight of 65 lb (30 kg) for the child plus the restraint when using LATCH. This is an installation specification from the vehicle manual, not a population statistic. Once the child and seat together exceed that limit, follow the vehicle and restraint instructions for a seat-belt installation if permitted.
What the published Sorento fit check actually tested
Cars.com’s article, How Do Car Seats Fit in a 2025 Kia Sorento?, reports a hands-on evaluation of a 2024 gasoline X-Line with second-row captain’s chairs. The article says little changed for 2025, but it was not a Hybrid test and it did not evaluate a second-row bench.

The editors used three restraint types:
- Chicco KeyFit 30 infant seat
- Graco Contender 65 convertible seat
- Graco TurboBooster
Each type received strong individual grades in the tested positions, yet all three did not fit together in that second row. The result shows why a seat that installs well by itself can still fail in a three-seat combination: neighboring shells can overlap, a buckle can become unreachable, or a rear-facing base can consume the space needed by the seat beside it.

Do not convert that finding into “only two seats fit every Sorento Hybrid.” It applies to the tested gasoline vehicle, its captain’s-chair layout and those restraint dimensions.
Third-row car-seat considerations
The same Cars.com check reported two LATCH anchor sets and tether points in the third row. Its forward-facing convertible could be installed with LATCH, but a fixed head restraint prevented the seat from sitting fully flush and pushed it forward. The booster also sat slightly away from the seatback because of the fixed head restraint. Editors noted that the third-row buckles were floppy and could be difficult for a child to operate independently.
Those observations make third-row usability a separate question from simple installation. Before assigning a child to the back row, check all of the following in your vehicle:

- Whether the tether can be routed to the approved point without twisting
- Whether the child can reach and operate the buckle from the seated position
- Whether an installed restraint blocks the second-row slide, tilt or walk-through needed to reach the row
The third-row center has no lower anchors in the 2025 manual. Do not attach a LATCH connector there; use only an installation method and seating position that both manuals approve.

How to determine your Sorento Hybrid’s real capacity
- Record the vehicle details. Write down the model year, country, trim and whether the second row is a bench or captain’s chairs. Anchor layouts can differ by configuration.
- List every restraint. Identify each seat by model and type: rear-facing infant carrier, rear-facing or forward-facing convertible, harnessed seat or booster. Include the child’s current size and expected growth because a recline setting or harness height can change the footprint.
- Map approved positions. Use the applicable Kia manual to locate lower anchors and tether points. For the 2025 layouts, the second-row outboard positions have anchors in the 7-seat vehicle, the 8-seat vehicle adds the center, and the third-row center has none.
- Choose the allowed installation method. Follow the restraint maker’s instructions for rear-facing, forward-facing and booster use. Use LATCH only within Kia’s 65 lb combined child-and-seat recommendation and only where anchors are provided.
- Install one restraint at a time. Tighten the seat using the permitted LATCH or seat-belt method, then push and pull at the belt path to confirm that it is firmly attached. Do not judge fit from an uninstalled shell placed on the cushion.
- Add the neighboring restraint. Check for shell contact, overlapping bases, blocked buckles and interference with harness adjustment. A restraint that is tight by itself may loosen or shift when the adjacent seat is installed.
- Test occupants and access. Place the child or a similarly sized tester in each seat. Confirm that a booster rider can reach and operate the buckle, that a rear-facing seat leaves acceptable front-passenger room and that every child can be reached in an emergency.
- Exercise the third-row mechanism. Fold, slide or tilt the second-row seat exactly as your family will use it. If an installed restraint prevents access, the arrangement is not practical even if every seat is technically tight.
- Repeat after adjustment. Recheck the installation whenever a seat changes direction, recline, harness setting or seating position. Keep the vehicle and restraint manuals with your records.
Three-across planning: bench versus captain’s chairs
If you need three restraints in one row, start with the narrowest combination rather than assuming that three compact-looking seats will work. A rear-facing infant carrier often has a wide base; a convertible may need a specific recline angle; and a booster requires clear access to the vehicle belt and buckle.
With a second-row bench
Measure and test all three installed restraints together. The center position may use LATCH only in the 8-seat layout described by Kia’s 2025 manual; in a 7-seat layout, a center seat would need an approved seat-belt installation if the restraint maker allows it. Verify that the center buckle remains accessible and that the outboard restraints do not press against it.
With captain’s chairs
Plan around two second-row positions rather than three-across capacity. A third restraint may need to use the third row, which introduces head-restraint, tether, buckle and access checks. The Cars.com result demonstrates that three seats did not fit in the tested captain’s-chair second row, but it does not establish a Hybrid-specific maximum.
Independent safety context
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 2026 Kia Sorento evaluation covers Sorento models from 2021 through 2026 and identifies four rear seating positions with complete LATCH hardware in the tested vehicle. The listed test trim is SX, and the evaluation does not establish that a particular restraint combination fits a Sorento Hybrid. Use it as anchor-hardware context, not as a three-across certification.

Common fit failures and fixes
“All three bases touch, so they must fit.”
Touching is not the same as independent securement. Remove and reinstall each seat, check movement at its belt path and confirm that each buckle can be latched without forcing it around a neighboring shell.
“The center has a visible anchor, so I can use it.”
Use only the anchor positions identified for your exact vehicle. Kia’s 2025 manual specifically says the third-row center has no lower anchors. A visible gap or symbol elsewhere is not authorization.
“The booster installs, but my child cannot buckle it.”
Move the booster to a position where the child can reach the buckle, or use a different approved seating position. Independent buckle operation is part of usable fit, especially in the third row.
“The rear-facing seat leaves no front-seat room.”
Try the other approved second-row position, adjust the restraint only within its instructions and reassess front-passenger legroom. If neither position works, the combination is not suitable for that vehicle configuration.
Bottom line for buyers and owners
Answer “How many car seats fit?” with the exact vehicle and exact restraints, not a model-wide number. The 2025 Kia documentation establishes two second-row outboard LATCH positions in the 7-seat layout, three second-row positions in the 8-seat layout and no third-row-center lower anchors. The current 2026 Hybrid is offered with a bench or captain’s chairs depending on configuration. A hands-on test of a gasoline Sorento with captain’s chairs found that three seats did not fit together, while no located test proves three-across fit in the Hybrid bench.
Before buying or committing to a seating plan, install every restraint in the actual Sorento, verify movement and buckle access, check front-seat and third-row clearance, and follow both manuals for the permitted method and weight limits.
