Plan for about a year for a full north-to-south Pan-American journey with time to explore, arrange vehicle transport, and absorb delays. Travel + Leisure’s July 16, 2026, report says trips can take from a few months to more than a year, depending on driving pace and stops; its interviewed travelers recommend at least a year. That is a practical itinerary recommendation, not a measured average. And the route is not continuously drivable: the Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia has no road, so a vehicle must be transported around it.
Why there is no single drive-time estimate
“The Pan-American Highway” can refer to different routes, endpoints, and branches. A Canadian federal TERMIUM Plus record describes a network nearly 48,000 kilometres (29,800 miles) long and notes that no comprehensive route is officially defined in the United States and Canada. By contrast, Travel + Leisure frames a specific itinerary from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina, and describes it as nearly 19,000 miles. Those figures describe different route concepts, not competing measurements of one fixed road.
Even after choosing endpoints, the calendar depends on how many hours you drive each day and how long you spend exploring. A quick-moving trip and an overland journey with extended regional stops are different undertakings.
What the one-year recommendation includes
Travel + Leisure reports that the travelers it interviewed recommend at least one year for the journey, allocating four months to Mexico and Central America, six months to South America, and two months to vehicle shipping, logistics, and buffers. This is their suggested schedule, not a universal requirement or a statistical average.

#1 Best Overall
The same report describes the travelers’ Latin American leg, from Mexico to Argentina, as lasting a year and a half, with camping in 344 places. That example shows how sightseeing and frequent stops can extend a trip; it should not be taken as a typical duration.
The Darién Gap makes it an overland journey, not one continuous drive
The road system is interrupted between Panama and Colombia by the Darién Gap. Guinness World Records describes the rainforest gap as around 110 kilometres (70 miles). There is no continuous road for drivers across it, so completing the route requires arranging transport for the vehicle around the gap. That shipping and its associated logistics belong in the trip calendar, not in a calculation of hours behind the wheel.

Choose a timeline that fits your trip
- A few months: Travel + Leisure reports this as possible for travelers who keep moving and limit time spent stopping. It is not a guarantee that every route can be completed in that time.
- About a year: A reasonable planning baseline for a full trip that includes exploration, the Darién Gap vehicle-transport break, logistics, and some buffer, based on the recommendation reported by Travel + Leisure.
- More than a year: Allow longer if you want extended stays or frequent sightseeing; the same report gives a year-and-a-half Latin American trip as one example.
To make an estimate useful, define the start and finish, decide which branches count, and distinguish driving days from the full expedition calendar. Then add time for stops and vehicle transport rather than treating the journey as an uninterrupted road trip.
