Automakers set different terms for connected services, over-the-air (OTA) update eligibility, map-update subscriptions, and individual update downloads. Those terms do not establish how long a car’s physical infotainment hardware will last or remain available as a replacement part. For a useful answer, you need the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, infotainment generation, and country—and you need to ask what kind of support you mean.
“Support” can mean several different things
An infotainment system is not covered by one universal support clock. An automaker may keep one service running while ending another, or make a particular update available through one delivery method but not another. Before treating a published duration as an answer, identify which of these it measures.

- Connectivity service: Access to connected features under a service plan or included term. That term does not, by itself, say when software updates stop.
- Update eligibility and delivery: Whether a particular vehicle and system can receive an available update, and whether it arrives OTA, by manual download, or through a dealer.
- Update availability: How long a specific update can be downloaded after release. This is different from a promise that new updates will be issued for that many years.
- Update fees: Whether updates, ongoing map or multimedia updates, or installation are free, subscription-based, or subject to dealer labor charges.
- End of support for a system generation: A notice may name specific vehicles or navigation systems and identify their final update dates. It should not be generalized to other generations or the entire automaker’s lineup.
- Hardware life and replacement: Whether a screen, computer, or other component will physically work or be available as a replacement. The policies below do not establish a standard hardware lifespan or replacement-parts commitment.
Vehicle-system, security, and safety updates also should not be lumped together with navigation maps, multimedia, or interface updates. Some automakers state different terms for these categories. A date that ends one type of update does not necessarily mark the end of every kind of support.
What automakers’ published terms actually say
The examples below show why the numbers cannot be compared as if they were competing estimates of total infotainment life. They refer to different services, update types, markets, and conditions. The policy details are from official automaker or automaker-service sources accessed October 9, 2026; terms can change and vary by vehicle.

The notice is useful because it names vehicle groups and dates instead of suggesting a universal brand-wide cutoff. It still needs to be matched to the navigation system in the specific vehicle; model name and year alone may not identify the system generation.

How to find the answer for your own vehicle
Start with the vehicle identification number (VIN) or exact model details, then ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer about each support category separately. A general answer such as “it gets updates” or “support lasts three years” is too imprecise to settle what you need to know.
- Identify the exact configuration. Provide the VIN if possible, plus make, model, model year, trim, country, and the infotainment or navigation generation and software version. Model, construction date, or trim can affect OTA eligibility; Kia UK explicitly notes those differences.
- Name the update type. Ask separately whether security, vehicle-system, infotainment-interface, and navigation/map updates are still being issued for that system. Do not assume an answer about maps also applies to security or vehicle software.
- Confirm eligibility and prerequisites. Ask whether this exact vehicle is technically eligible and whether it needs an enrolled account, subscription, cellular connection, or particular software version. For example, Hyundai Motor America’s stated complimentary map and multimedia OTA period requires an active Bluelink account.
- Ask how delivery works. Is the update OTA, a manual download for local installation, or dealer-installed? If an OTA update fails or is unavailable, ask what the next step is and whether dealer labor is charged.
- Check for an end date or notice. Ask whether a published end-of-support notice or last-update date applies to this system generation. A date for a different navigation generation or market may not apply to your car.
- Get costs by category. Ask whether the update itself is free, whether continued map or multimedia updates require a subscription, and whether installation or dealer assistance carries a service or labor charge.
- Ask what remains usable if updates stop. Confirm the behavior of the actual car: basic audio, Bluetooth, smartphone projection, navigation, connected features, and any cloud-dependent functions may not all have the same status.
OTA, USB, and dealer installation are different paths
“OTA support” describes a delivery route, not the entire update policy. A vehicle can be ineligible for a particular OTA update, need a prerequisite version, or require follow-up after a failed download. An automaker may also offer local installation or dealer service under different terms.

Hyundai Motor Europe lists USB alongside OTA and dealer support as an update method. That does not establish a universal USB capacity, filesystem, or compatibility rule: follow the instructions for the exact vehicle and update. A generic flash drive is not a substitute for an automaker-provided update package or model-specific procedure. Where manual USB installation is officially supported, use the manufacturer’s directions and confirm the required drive specifications before preparing it.
Costs also depend on the stage of the process. Volkswagen says OTA updates in its U.S. guidance have no additional charge, while a failed or unavailable OTA may require dealer follow-up. Nissan USA says its OTA updates are provided without charge but dealer assistance may incur service charges; its software agreement also allows updates to be offered free or for a fee at Nissan’s discretion. Kia UK distinguishes OTA from manual download or dealer installation, where dealer labor may be charged. Ask about both the update and the installation rather than treating “free update” as a promise of free service in every case.

What changes when a system reaches end of support?
“End of software update support” does not, on its own, mean the screen immediately stops working or the whole infotainment system fails. It means the update stream identified by the automaker is no longer available for the specified system or vehicle group. The reviewed automaker policies do not establish one universal outcome for basic radio, Bluetooth, smartphone projection, navigation, or connected features after that point.

Functions that rely on online services can also change independently of locally available functions or update support. Online maps, traffic information, voice services, app integrations, and other cloud-dependent features may have different service terms. Do not infer their status from a navigation system’s last software-update date; ask the automaker which specific functions remain available in the car and in your market.

Nor does an end-of-support notice establish whether replacement hardware is available, whether a repair is economical, or whether a replacement unit would receive current software. Those are separate parts and service questions. If you are evaluating an older vehicle, ask about the exact component and function you care about rather than treating the update cutoff as a hardware failure date.
How to interpret the headline numbers
The example durations answer different questions. Tesla’s eight years are an included Standard Connectivity term measured from the first delivery as new or first in-service date, whichever comes first. Hyundai Motor America’s three years are a complimentary map and multimedia OTA period for new vehicles with an active Bluelink account, after which a subscription is required for continued updates in that category. Škoda’s two years run from the release of an individual software update and describe how long it remains downloadable.
These figures are not evidence of an industry-wide average or a promise that all infotainment software, connected services, or hardware will last for the same period. No cross-industry statistic establishing a typical automaker infotainment-support lifespan is established here. For an individual vehicle, the decisive information is its market-specific, system-specific policy and the update category you need.
