A land speed record is not established by a driver’s speedometer or a single impressive pass. For an FIA world land-speed record, officials first identify the record category and class, certify the course distance, record the vehicle’s passage with verified automatic timing equipment, apply the rule for that kind of attempt, and submit the signed results for adjudication. The details matter: the FIA’s opposing-direction averaging rule applies to open-course records up to 10 miles, except acceleration records; it is not a universal rule for every record attempt.
First establish which record is being attempted
“Land speed record” can describe results governed by different authorities. This article covers FIA world records under Article 2.7.4 and the 2026 edition of Appendix D to the FIA International Sporting Code. A national record is governed by the relevant National Sporting Authority (ASN), and event records may follow event-specific regulations. The procedure described here should not be assumed to apply to those other claims.

The FIA organizes records by category, group and class. It distinguishes, among other types, standing-start acceleration records, flying-start distance records, long-distance standing-start records, time records and special absolute records. A record claim is meaningful only when its category and class are clear: the prescribed distance, start method, run format and applicable calculation depend on what is being attempted. Confirm those particulars in the applicable rules before comparing two speeds.
The FIA describes its world records as “motorsport distilled to its two most basic elements – distance versus time – to create the fastest recognised official speeds achieved by any wheeled vehicle on land.” In practice, that simple idea depends on controlled measurement at both ends: the distance has to be established, and the elapsed time has to be captured under the relevant rules.

How an FIA attempt is measured and verified
1. Define the category, class and course
Officials must know which record rule applies before interpreting a run. A standing-start attempt is not interchangeable with a flying-start attempt, and a one-way result cannot automatically be compared with a result calculated from opposing-direction runs. The class and record type determine which distance and procedure are relevant.
The course must also be identified as the type relevant to the rule—for example, an open course or a closed course. The two-direction averaging requirement described below is specifically scoped to FIA open-course records up to 10 miles, other than acceleration records. It should not be extended to closed-course, endurance or other categories without checking their provisions.
2. Survey and certify the course length
Under the 2026 FIA Appendix D, the course length must be measured and certified to within 1/10,000 of its length, subject to the rules’ specified treatment of courses combining straight and curved sections. The measurement is not merely a nominal distance chosen for an event: it is part of the record evidence used to calculate speed.

For a permanent course, original construction-survey data may be used if the course has not changed. If it has changed, Appendix D sets out when a new survey is required. This makes course condition relevant to the measurement: officials need a valid basis for the distance on the day the record is attempted.

3. Capture elapsed time automatically
FIA timing is based on the vehicle passing the measured start and finish points. Timing equipment must be automatic, accurate to 1/1,000 of a second, and triggered by the automobile’s passage without human intervention. A person reading a clock, a dashboard display or a speedometer is not the official timing method described by these rules.
The equipment must have an official verification certificate issued less than two years before the attempt, and that certificate must still be valid on the attempt date. The system must preserve timing-event logs. Appendix D recommends parallel, redundant systems that are fully independent; this is a recommendation, not a requirement stated in the cited provision. Independent backup timing can help corroborate a result, but it does not replace compliance with the required equipment, certification and recordkeeping.
4. Make the runs required for that category
For FIA open-course speed records up to 10 miles, excluding acceleration records, the calculation uses consecutive runs in opposite directions. The rule allows no more than 60 minutes to complete the opposite-direction run used in the average. That interval is part of this defined open-course procedure; it should not be presented as a general deadline for every record format.

The two directions provide a check against a result that might otherwise reflect conditions favoring one direction. The official figure for a covered attempt is therefore not simply the fastest pass. The prescribed pair and the rule’s calculation govern the result. For acceleration records and other categories, consult the specific applicable procedure rather than assuming the same paired-run method.

5. Calculate from the official times
For covered open-course records, the FIA calculates speed using the average of the times from consecutive runs in opposite directions. The calculation is based on those recorded times and the applicable measured distance, with the precision and conversion rules specified in Appendix D. It is not a speedometer reading, nor should an observer independently substitute a preferred rounding method.
Appendix D prohibits correcting, rounding or modifying the recorded times. This matters because a small change to a time can change the calculated speed, especially at high speeds and over short distances. The official calculation therefore preserves the timing data as recorded and applies the rule’s required precision and conversion rather than smoothing or editing the input.
6. Submit the record for adjudication
At the end of an attempt, timekeepers prepare and sign a report and submit it, along with the original timesheets, to the stewards. That paperwork connects the calculated result to the underlying timing evidence. A published event result or a claimed run is not the same thing as a record that has completed the formal adjudication process.

Homologation depends on compliance with Appendix D and on the automobile’s record class. A record claim should therefore be described as formally recognized only when the applicable authority has accepted it through the proper route.

Which attempts use opposing-direction averaging?
The table summarizes the scope that can be stated from the FIA rules described here. “Not established here” means the cited material does not provide a universal procedure for that category; the applicable rule must be checked before describing a particular attempt.

Why a speedometer or GPS reading is not the official result
A speedometer reports what the vehicle’s instrument displays, not an official elapsed time over a surveyed record course. For the FIA process described here, officials measure the course, time the vehicle’s passage at the start and finish automatically, and calculate speed under the applicable rule. The timing method and the course measurement together establish the evidence behind the figure.
The distinction also explains why a dramatic pass does not by itself settle a record. A result must use the correct category and procedure, have valid timing evidence, and pass through the required reporting and adjudication route. A device reading or an event announcement may describe a run, but it does not on its own demonstrate that the result has been homologated as an FIA world record.

How to compare two land-speed claims fairly
Before comparing headline speeds, check the information that makes each figure interpretable. If a report omits a material detail, treat the comparison as incomplete rather than assuming both records were measured under equivalent rules.

- Authority: Is the claim an FIA world record, a national record adjudicated under an ASN, or an event result?
- Category and class: Is it an acceleration, flying-start distance, standing-start, time, endurance or other record?
- Course: What type of course and measured distance were used? Was the course surveyed under the applicable rule?
- Start method: Was the attempt standing-start or flying-start?
- Run format: Was the result one-way, or did the applicable rule require consecutive runs in opposite directions?
- Timing evidence: Was timing automatic, sufficiently precise and supported by a certificate valid on the attempt date? Were timing-event logs retained?
- Record status: Is the figure an event result or a formally adjudicated and homologated record?
These checks prevent a common category error: treating every number labelled “land speed record” as if it represented the same distance, start, course and validation process. A valid comparison needs like-for-like claims, or a clear explanation of how the procedures differ.
An example of an officially listed world record
The FIA’s world-record page identifies ThrustSSC, driven by Andy Green, as the outright world land-speed record holder, with a figure of 763.035 mph (1,227.985 km/h) over one mile from October 1997. The FIA also states that ThrustSSC exceeded the sound barrier at Mach 1.016. These are figures and descriptions reported by the FIA, not a general estimate of what a land-speed record run entails.
Record lists can change, so a current claim should be checked against the FIA’s official record list and the specific category named. The figure above is the FIA listing available on 9 October 2026; it should not be read as proof that every land-speed category uses the same course, run format or calculation.
What makes a result verifiable?
A verifiable result is a documented chain rather than a single number. The course distance has an appropriate survey basis; timing is automatic and supported by valid equipment certification and preserved logs; the required run or runs follow the correct category rule; and timekeepers submit signed reports and original timesheets for review. The authority then decides whether the application satisfies the requirements for that class.
That chain is why the governing authority and record category belong alongside any quoted speed. Without them, readers cannot tell whether the figure is an FIA world record, a national record, an event result or a claim measured under a different method. The headline speed may be the most visible part of the story, but the measurement and verification procedure is what makes it an official record.
