That is the engine’s stated output—not the 1,700 hp quoted for the original TFG-powered Gemera hybrid system, which includes electric motors. The TFG shows what a bespoke, highly developed engine can achieve; it does not mean three-cylinder engines generally make hypercar-level power.
What is the Koenigsegg TFG?
TFG stands for Tiny Friendly Giant, Koenigsegg’s name for a 2.0-liter, twin-turbocharged three-cylinder engine developed for the Gemera concept. The company’s published specifications list 600 hp at 7,500 rpm, a redline of 8,500 rpm, and 600 Nm of torque from 2,000 to 7,000 rpm. They also list a 9.5:1 compression ratio, a 95 mm bore, a 93.5 mm stroke, and an engine weight of 70 kg.

How can a three-cylinder make so much power?
Cylinder count alone does not set an engine’s power ceiling. Power depends on how much useful work an engine produces and how quickly it produces it. A smaller number of cylinders can still support high output when the engine combines substantial airflow, effective combustion, and a high operating speed. In the TFG’s case, the relevant context is its 2.0-liter displacement, twin turbochargers, high specified rpm, and combustion-control equipment—not simply the number of cylinders.

Turbochargers help the engine move more air
A turbocharger uses exhaust energy to drive a compressor that pushes more air into the engine than it would draw in naturally. With more oxygen available, an engine can burn more fuel per cycle and produce more work, provided its fuel delivery, cooling, combustion, and other systems can support that operation. Koenigsegg specifies twin turbochargers for the TFG. The published specifications do not isolate how much power the turbochargers contribute, so it would be misleading to assign them a separate horsepower figure.
Engine speed matters as well as torque
Power is related to both torque and rotational speed: an engine can make more power by producing substantial torque, by producing it at higher rpm, or by combining the two. The TFG’s stated 600 Nm plateau runs from 2,000 to 7,000 rpm, while its stated power peak is at 7,500 rpm. Those figures describe different parts of the engine’s operating range; the torque value should not be mistaken for a separate horsepower rating or for a peak confined to one rpm point.
The 8,500 rpm redline is the manufacturer’s stated upper engine-speed limit. It is not the same as the speed at which peak power occurs, and it does not mean the engine should continuously operate at the redline.

Control systems help manage combustion
Koenigsegg lists Freevalve technology and closed-loop combustion control with in-cylinder pressure sensing. In broad terms, pressure sensing gives an engine-management system information about combustion inside the cylinders, while closed-loop control uses feedback to manage operation. These details help explain why the TFG is a specialized design rather than a conventional small engine with turbochargers added as a simple bolt-on change.
The specifications do not quantify the individual contribution of Freevalve, pressure sensing, or any other component to the 600 hp claim. They also do not provide enough detail to calculate a component-by-component power breakdown. The defensible conclusion is that these features form part of the complete engine design, not that any one of them independently accounts for a particular share of output.
Is the Gemera’s three-cylinder engine really rated at 1,700 hp?
No. The TFG itself is specified at 600 hp. The 1,700 hp figure belongs to the original TFG Gemera hybrid powertrain, which combines the combustion engine with electric motors. Calling the three-cylinder engine a 1,700 hp engine confuses the output of the complete system with the output of one part of it.

Koenigsegg’s technical specification describes three electric motors and gives both individual motor ratings and a lower combined electric-power figure. Those numbers are not interchangeable: adding the separately listed motor ratings does not mean all of that power is available simultaneously as the system’s combined electric output. The page’s 1,700 hp figure is the stated total for the original TFG hybrid configuration.
How the Gemera powertrain descriptions differ
Koenigsegg’s current Gemera model presentation describes a different configuration from the original TFG concept: a Hot-Vee V8 paired with the Dark Matter e-motor. The company gives that powertrain a combined output of 2,300 hp. Its history page recounts the Gemera’s initial presentation with the TFG and the later addition of the V8 for the client-specification version.
| Gemera configuration | Combustion engine | Published system output | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original TFG hybrid description | 2.0-liter twin-turbo three-cylinder; 600 hp specified for the engine | 1,700 hp | Combined hybrid powertrain, not the three-cylinder alone |
| Current model-page presentation | Hot-Vee V8 with Dark Matter e-motor | 2,300 hp | Combined hybrid powertrain, not the V8 alone |
The Hot-Vee explanation is relevant to the later configuration, not an explanation of the TFG’s output. Koenigsegg says the layout places the exhaust and turbochargers inside the V to make the engine more compact, alongside changes to airflow, turbocharging, charge cooling, and exhaust design.

The official pages establish a change in how the Gemera is presented. They do not establish whether the TFG version remains available to order or whether it will be built for customers. Do not infer either outcome from the concept’s original announcement or the current model page alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the TFG’s specifications do—and do not—tell you
They describe a specific engine, not a typical three-cylinder
The TFG is a bespoke Koenigsegg design. Its output should not be treated as a forecast for ordinary three-cylinder engines, which may differ in displacement, turbocharging, rpm limits, materials, cooling, control systems, and intended use. The example demonstrates that three cylinders do not impose a fixed power limit; it does not show that cylinder count is irrelevant to packaging, smoothness, cost, or durability.
Engine weight is not vehicle power-to-weight data
Koenigsegg lists the TFG at 70 kg. That figure refers to the engine as specified, not the weight of the complete hybrid system or Gemera. It cannot by itself establish the vehicle’s power-to-weight ratio, because that calculation requires the weight of the whole vehicle and a clear definition of which power output is being used.

Published output is not an independent result
The available figures come from Koenigsegg’s own technical and model information. They support accurate attribution—“Koenigsegg specifies”—rather than a claim that an independent test confirmed the numbers. The cited material does not establish comparative acceleration, reliability, fuel economy, or customer-use performance for the TFG configuration.
The practical answer
A three-cylinder can make exceptionally high power when it is designed to move and burn a large amount of air-fuel mixture across a high operating range. Koenigsegg’s TFG combines 2.0 liters of displacement with twin turbochargers, a 7,500 rpm power peak, and advanced combustion-control features. Its specified engine output is 600 hp. The separate 1,700 hp figure applies to the original hybrid Gemera system, while Koenigsegg’s current Gemera page presents a V8-based system rated at 2,300 hp.
