You receive a link from a seller to pay for the car you are about to buy. Should you trust it? A payment link alone is not proof that a seller owns the vehicle or that your payment will clear. KeySavvy, a Seattle company profiled by GeekWire in 2022, positions itself as an intermediary for private-party sales: it says it checks identity and ownership, handles payment and documents, and helps move the title transaction forward. Those are company-described safeguards—not independent proof that the service eliminates fraud.
What risk is KeySavvy designed to address?
Private-party sales can leave each side exposed. A buyer may pay someone who cannot deliver valid ownership or a title that can be registered. A seller may hand over the car before receiving verified funds. KeySavvy’s model is to step into a sale after the buyer and seller have found each other and agreed on a price, rather than requiring them to find the car through KeySavvy.
In its 2022 profile, GeekWire quoted co-founder and CEO Andrew Crowell describing the buyer’s title risk: “I think we can lower that trust barrier by being the educator,” said Crowell. “Not everyone knows that they could buy a car that they end up not being able to register, and they illegally drive this car and they just get stuck with it.” (GeekWire, August 13, 2022)
How a KeySavvy transaction is supposed to work
- Agree on the car and price directly. The parties can find one another on another marketplace; KeySavvy says its service works alongside listings elsewhere.
- Start the transaction through the seller’s payment link. The buyer and seller use KeySavvy to proceed with the agreed sale.
- Complete identity, ownership, and vehicle checks. KeySavvy says it uses third-party identity verification and a combination of public records, seller-provided information, and DMV records to verify ownership. It says it checks for loans and liens that could prevent registration and provides an NMVTIS report. Title brands are disclosed before payment. A buyer may separately purchase a CARFAX or AutoCheck report.
- Sign the documents electronically and arrange payment. The company says it creates an electronically signed bill of sale and processes the transaction as a dealer—buying from the seller and selling to the buyer. It says that structure enables title checks, temporary permits, and DMV-data access.
- Complete handover and title steps. KeySavvy says it provides a temporary permit and title instructions. Follow the instructions for the specific transaction and do not treat a link or a signed bill of sale by itself as proof that payment has settled or title requirements are complete.
These steps describe KeySavvy’s published process, not an independently audited measure of how often fraud is prevented. For its current description, see KeySavvy’s official service page.

What KeySavvy currently charges
| Charge | Current published amount | Who pays and when |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction fee | $99 for the buyer and $99 for the seller | The parties may split the transaction fee or have one side pay it. KeySavvy says it charges only when the transaction completes and does not charge a cancellation fee. |
| Seller loan-payoff fee | Additional $99 | Applies when KeySavvy pays off a seller’s loan. |
These are prices shown on KeySavvy’s official site, accessed October 4, 2026; confirm the fee schedule before beginning because published prices can change. The 2022 GeekWire profile reported a $49 buyer fee, and GeekWire reported $79 in November 2023; neither is the current published fee. (2022 profile; 2023 report)
How long verification and payment may take
KeySavvy says typical verification takes 15–30 minutes during business hours. That is not a promise that the entire sale will finish in that window: contact with a seller’s lender may delay the transaction, and payment confirmation can take up to one business day depending on the buyer’s bank. For sales above $50,000, KeySavvy says buyers must pay by wire transfer. These timing and payment details are the company’s current published terms, accessed October 4, 2026 (KeySavvy).

Who can use the service?
KeySavvy’s current site says the vehicle must have a U.S. title and the buyer needs a U.S. address to receive the title. It also describes optional financing through partner lenders and names JJ Best for collector-car financing. Availability, eligibility, and any associated terms depend on the transaction and lender; check directly with the provider before relying on financing.
What to verify before paying a private seller
Whether you use an intermediary or arrange a sale yourself, check the parts of the transaction that matter to both sides. A service’s stated process should not replace your own review of the vehicle, paperwork, payment terms, or applicable state requirements.

- Identity and authority: Confirm the seller’s identity and that the person signing can transfer the vehicle.
- Title and registration: Review the title and check for liens, brands, or ownership issues that could obstruct registration. Ask how any lien will be paid and released.
- Payment and handover: Establish what counts as confirmed funds, who verifies them, and when the car and keys are transferred.
- Paperwork and permits: Know who prepares the bill of sale, handles title reassignment, and provides any temporary permit or title-transfer instructions.
- Fees and timing: Confirm the total charges, who pays, accepted payment methods, and possible bank or lender delays.
- Eligibility: Check that the service supports the vehicle, title, and location involved.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
GeekWire’s 2022 story and 2023 funding report describe KeySavvy’s pitch and company history; KeySavvy’s current site describes its process, scope, timing, and fees. The sources do not establish an independent fraud-reduction rate or a current, balanced feature-by-feature comparison with other transaction services. Treat claims about preventing or reducing fraud as the company’s stated aim, not a quantified result. GeekWire reported that KeySavvy announced $2 million in seed funding from Porsche Ventures and Founders’ Co-op in 2023; funding is not evidence of transaction safety or effectiveness (GeekWire, November 6, 2023).
