How Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Buses Work: From Refueling to the Road

Hydrogen buses convert onboard hydrogen into electricity for an electric motor. Here’s how fueling, batteries, regenerative braking, depot needs and tailpipe emissions fit together.

A hydrogen fuel-cell bus is an electric bus: it stores hydrogen onboard, converts some of its chemical energy into electricity in a fuel-cell stack, and uses an electric motor to turn its wheels. A battery can help meet bursts of power and recover energy while braking. The bus must also be supported by a depot that can store and dispense hydrogen and maintain the vehicles.

What makes a hydrogen fuel-cell bus move?

The bus does not rely on hydrogen burning in an engine to turn the wheels. Instead, hydrogen is fed to a fuel-cell system, where it reacts with oxygen from the air and produces electricity. The electricity powers an electric motor, which provides traction. The U.S. Department of Energy summarizes the sequence this way: “The hydrogen stores energy, flows into a fuel cell, reacts with oxygen from the air, and creates electricity that powers the electric motor.”

That makes “hydrogen bus” a description of the energy source, not a different kind of drivetrain. The bus still moves electrically. Its defining difference from a battery-electric bus is where much of its onboard energy is stored and how the vehicle replenishes it: hydrogen is held in tanks and converted to electricity as needed, rather than all propulsion energy being stored in a large traction battery.

How energy travels from the depot to the wheels

1. Hydrogen is stored onboard

At a depot, the bus is refueled and carries hydrogen in onboard tanks. The fuel is supplied from those tanks to the fuel-cell system as the bus operates. Hydrogen is commonly sold by mass in vehicle-fueling contexts, but there is no single universal dispenser configuration, tank pressure, or fill time established for every bus and station. Those details depend on the specific vehicle and fueling equipment.

2. The fuel cell generates electricity

Hydrogen flows into the fuel-cell stack and reacts with oxygen drawn from the air. The resulting electrical supply is used by the vehicle’s electric-drive system. In practical terms, the fuel cell is an onboard electricity generator: it converts the stored energy in hydrogen into power for the bus rather than mechanically driving an axle.

3. The battery and power electronics balance demand

A fuel-cell bus may also have a battery. In a documented hybrid configuration, the battery can provide additional power when demand rises, such as during acceleration, and store energy recovered during regenerative braking. Regenerative braking captures some of the bus’s motion energy as it slows and makes that energy available again. The fuel cell can also recharge the battery when power demand is lower.

A power electronics controller manages the electrical supply delivered to the traction motor. The fuel cell and battery therefore have complementary roles in a hybrid system: the fuel cell supplies electricity, while the battery can help handle changing demand and capture recovered energy. The exact system design varies by bus, so one fleet’s component arrangement should not be treated as a universal specification.

4. An electric motor turns the wheels

The traction motor converts electrical power into motion at the wheels. In the historical BC Transit buses described by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the fuel-cell system was not mechanically connected to the drive axle. Instead, the fuel cell and battery supplied electric motors. That series configuration illustrates the electric-drive principle, but it is a particular fleet design rather than a claim about every fuel-cell bus.

How bus refueling works—and what cannot be generalized

Refueling starts with the bus at a station, commonly as part of its fleet’s depot operations. Hydrogen moves from the station’s supply and dispensing equipment into the vehicle’s onboard storage tanks. The fuel-cell system then draws hydrogen from those tanks while the bus is in service. This is the basic system-level path; station layout and equipment are not identical everywhere.

There is no reliable universal fill-time figure or tank-pressure value for hydrogen buses in the sources cited here. A specific answer requires the bus model and the station serving it. The same is true of station capacity and fueling arrangements. A historical BC Transit project included a hydrogen station, but that single project does not establish what every transit agency needs to build.

  • The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
  • During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.

For an operator, fueling is not just a vehicle specification. The station must fit the fleet’s service needs, and the depot must be able to support vehicle maintenance. The BC Transit project also included safety-related maintenance-facility upgrades. That is evidence of the planning involved in that project, not a universal checklist or a substitute for the station operator’s and jurisdiction’s current procedures.

A historical example: BC Transit’s 2009-model-year fleet

NREL evaluated 20 New Flyer H40LFR buses from model year 2009. The fleet offers a concrete example of how the components can work together, but its figures describe those evaluated buses and should not be read as current specifications or typical performance for new buses.

Reported item BC Transit example How to interpret it
Fleet size and model year 20 New Flyer H40LFR buses, model year 2009 Historical evaluated fleet; NREL’s report page does not establish a current fleet count.
Fuel-cell power system 150 kW Ballard fuel-cell power system Specification reported for this fleet, not a general bus requirement.
Battery energy storage 47 kWh Rated energy storage reported for these buses.
Hydrogen tanks Roof-mounted, rated at 5,000 psi Specific to the evaluated buses; not a universal tank-pressure figure.
Reported range 337–381 km (210–237 miles) NREL reported this range based on minimum and maximum monthly average fuel economy and useful fuel in the historical evaluation; it is not a current universal range claim.
Drive configuration Series, charge-sustaining hybrid system; two 85 kW electric motors The fuel cell and battery supplied the motors; the system could recharge the battery at lower power demand and recover energy through regenerative braking.

The example helps explain why a range number needs its context. The 210–237-mile figure is tied to a specific evaluated fleet and to a calculation using monthly average fuel economy and useful fuel. It should not be compared directly with a current bus’s advertised range without aligning the vehicle, route, duty cycle, and measurement method.

  • 5.Then connect the 6V-12V DC power supply to the positive and negative wiring of the water electrolyzer part, and connect the transportation line of the electrical part to the electric energy after 2-3 minutes, the small motor starts to work, and the current is displayed on the current and voltmeter. Positive value.

What comes out of a hydrogen bus’s tailpipe?

At the vehicle, the fuel-cell reaction produces water and heat; a fuel-cell bus has no combustion-engine exhaust of the kind produced by a conventional diesel bus. That local tailpipe description is not the same as saying the entire energy pathway has zero emissions.

The climate and environmental impact depends in part on how the hydrogen is produced. Hydrogen made using different production pathways can have different upstream impacts, including emissions before the fuel ever reaches the depot. The Department of Energy explicitly distinguishes the vehicle’s operation from hydrogen’s production pathway. A fair emissions comparison therefore needs to consider the source and production of the hydrogen, not just what exits the bus.

What a transit agency has to plan beyond the bus

A fuel-cell bus deployment is a fleet and depot project as well as a vehicle purchase. A bus needs a reliable way to replenish its onboard hydrogen, and the operator needs facilities and processes suited to the equipment it adopts. The BC Transit project’s hydrogen station and maintenance-facility upgrades show two parts of that work. They do not prove that other fleets need the same station scale or facility changes.

  • Local rules and operating procedures: Use current official requirements for the relevant jurisdiction and the instructions provided for the bus and station. A general description of the technology is not a safety operating manual.
  • Whole-system performance: Evaluate vehicle performance alongside depot requirements, fueling logistics, route needs, and hydrogen production. Looking only at the bus omits important parts of operating the fleet.

How hydrogen buses compare with battery-electric buses

Both fuel-cell buses and battery-electric buses use electric motors for propulsion. The useful comparison is not “electric versus non-electric”; it is how the two systems store and replenish energy, and how well each fits a particular service and depot. Hydrogen buses carry hydrogen and generate electricity onboard, while battery-electric buses store propulsion energy in batteries and replenish it through charging.

Range, refueling or charging time, energy use, route suitability, vehicle availability, depot requirements, maintenance, and lifecycle emissions should be compared for the same geography and duty cycle. The sources cited here do not establish a current apples-to-apples cost or lifecycle-emissions comparison, so no general winner or cost advantage can be inferred from the mechanism alone.

Historical demonstrations and targets are not current specifications

A Federal Transit Administration report documents development and demonstration of a particular 60-foot articulated fuel-cell electric bus developed by New Flyer and demonstrated at AC Transit. It is evidence that this project took place, not proof that the bus is currently available for procurement or that its configuration represents the present market.

Likewise, the Department of Energy’s technical-target table labels its benchmark columns “2015 Status,” “2016 Targets,” and “2020 Targets.” Those labels identify historical program benchmarks; they are not current guaranteed prices, specifications, reliability measures, or vehicle-availability statements. A current fleet decision needs current, model- and location-specific information.

What to remember

  • Hydrogen fuel-cell buses are electric-drive vehicles: a fuel-cell system generates electricity and an electric motor drives the wheels.
  • A battery may support the system by supplying extra power and capturing regenerative-braking energy; the design varies by bus.
  • Refueling and maintenance infrastructure are part of fleet operation, but details such as pressure, fill time, and facility requirements depend on the particular bus, station, and jurisdiction.
  • Water and heat at the vehicle do not establish zero lifecycle emissions; hydrogen’s production pathway matters.
