Formula E cars can continue racing when conditions allow, but rain does not trigger one automatic response. The Hankook iON is the championship’s all-weather tyre for the 2025/26 season; that does not make every downpour or waterlogged track safe. Teams assess the forecast and the chance of the circuit drying, while Race Control can let the session run, slow or bunch the field, or suspend it. Weather can also change the timetable and, if a race cannot be completed, affect the points awarded.
Do Formula E cars race in the rain?
Sometimes. Rain by itself does not mean a Formula E race must stop, and the championship does not use a single fixed procedure for every wet-weather situation. The deciding issue is whether conditions on the circuit allow cars to race safely, not simply whether rain is falling.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters because “wet conditions” can describe very different situations: a brief shower, a track that is drying after rain, or weather severe enough to make racing unsafe. The available Formula E guidance does not specify a rainfall amount or a universal grip threshold at which a race must be stopped. Race Control assesses the circumstances and can use different measures depending on the hazard.

So the short answer to “What happens when it rains?” is: the session may continue, be managed under a neutralization, or be suspended. Which response applies depends on conditions and the safety judgment at the event.

What the all-weather tyre does—and does not—mean
For the 2025/26 season, Formula E identifies the Hankook iON as its all-weather tyre. That describes the tyre used in the championship’s racing context; it is not a promise that cars can run safely in any amount of rain, through standing water, or in every weather condition. Track conditions and Race Control’s assessment remain decisive.
The championship’s Season 12 rules explainer lists an allocation of up to four new front and four new rear tyres per driver at a single-header round, rising to six new front and rear tyres at a double-header. These figures are specific to the season and the stated event formats, rather than a general wet-weather allowance. Check the applicable event regulations for the allocation in force at a particular round. Formula E’s Season 12 rules explainer gives the current season context.
An all-weather tyre also does not settle how fast a car will be in the wet, how much grip it will have at a particular circuit, or whether one setup choice will beat another. The championship’s published material cited here does not provide a wet-specific performance statistic or a universal wet-versus-dry pace comparison.

How teams prepare when the forecast is uncertain
Teams have to make setup decisions before they know exactly how the weather will develop. If rain is forecast, they must weigh the chance and severity of a downpour against the possibility that the circuit will stay dry or dry out. Preparing for one scenario can leave a team less well placed if the other occurs. The sources establish that this is a real strategic choice, but do not publish setup values or quantify the performance cost of either decision.
The main factors behind the choice
- Likelihood and severity of rain: a forecast of heavy rain poses a different planning problem from a low chance of a shower. A forecast remains uncertain, so teams have to consider both what is expected and what could happen instead.
- Whether the track may dry: if rain does not arrive, or conditions improve, a team that prepared for a wet track may face a different competitive situation from one that anticipated dry running.
- The grip and setup tradeoff: teams must consider how their preparation fits the conditions they expect. The available public information does not give technical setup numbers or establish one universally superior approach.
- The cost of being wrong: a team can lose out if its assumptions do not match the weather that actually arrives. The relevant risk changes as the forecast and track conditions evolve.
What the 2026 Shanghai E-Prix illustrates
Shanghai provides a dated example of the uncertainty, not a rule for every wet race. In a report dated 6 July 2026, Formula E described teams weighing whether to prepare for a downpour or gamble on the track drying. The report says the rain did not arrive and dry-weather runners had superior pace in the closing stages. That result shows how one event unfolded; it does not prove that dry preparation is generally faster or that a wet-weather setup is a mistake. Formula E’s Shanghai debrief describes the teams’ decision and the outcome.
What Race Control can do when conditions become hazardous
Race Control has options between letting a session proceed normally and stopping it. Formula E’s explainer describes the Safety Car and Full Course Yellow (FCY) as ways to slow or close up the field in response to hazards. A red flag suspends a session; Formula E identifies heavy weather as one reason a session may be red-flagged. These are tools for managing circumstances, not automatic steps that follow every shower.

| Situation or response | What it means for the session | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary running | Cars continue racing when conditions permit. | Rain alone does not establish that a stoppage is required. |
| Safety Car | The field is slowed and brought together while a hazard is managed. | Formula E describes it as a neutralization tool; a shower does not automatically require one. |
| Full Course Yellow | The field is slowed across the circuit in response to a hazard. | It is another possible neutralization, not a fixed wet-weather protocol. |
| Red flag | The session is suspended. | Heavy weather can be a reason for a red flag, but the source does not establish a rainfall threshold or say every wet session will be stopped. |
These options reflect a practical distinction: if a hazard can be managed while cars remain on track, a neutralization may be used; if conditions require the session to stop, a red flag can suspend it. Formula E’s flags, cautions, Safety Car and FCY explainer describes those procedures. For exact operational details at a particular event, consult the rules and regulations that apply to that event.

How rain can change the event schedule
Weather can affect more than the race itself. Before the 2026 Shanghai double-header, adverse forecasts led Formula E, the FIA, teams and manufacturers to amend track timings for both race days. The stated aim was to maximize track sessions while prioritizing safety and the experience of fans, guests and personnel. The notice was published on 3 July 2026 and concerns that event; it does not establish a standing schedule change for every race threatened by rain. The Shanghai schedule update records the change.
For viewers, this means that an event’s published timetable may not remain the final one when adverse weather is expected. A revised schedule is an event-management decision and should not be confused with a decision to red-flag a session already underway. Organizers may change timings in advance, while Race Control responds to conditions during a session.

What interruptions can mean for race distance and points
Neutralizations and suspensions can have consequences for the race’s distance and classification. Formula E’s Season 12 explainer says extra laps may be added for Safety Car and Full Course Yellow interruptions. Its current rules overview also says reduced points may be awarded if a race cannot be completed in full because of a red flag or inclement weather. The exact application belongs to the rules for the relevant season and event; these statements should not be treated as a promise that every interruption adds the same number of laps or produces the same points outcome.
The distinction is important: a neutralization that keeps the event moving and a red-flag suspension are not interchangeable. One can affect the number of laps needed to account for an interruption, while an event that cannot be completed may fall under the rules for reduced points. The applicable regulations determine the result in a specific case. Consult the Season 12 rules explainer and Formula E’s rules and regulations for season-specific detail.

There are two separate uncertainties: what the weather will do, and what Race Control will judge safe once conditions are known. Teams may choose a preparation based on a forecast that does not come true; organizers may revise track timings before the event; and Race Control may allow running, neutralize the field or suspend a session as conditions evolve. The existence of an all-weather tyre does not remove either uncertainty.

That is why it is misleading to infer a universal wet-weather pace effect from one race, or to assume that rain automatically produces a red flag. The 2026 Shanghai report offers one clear example of forecast risk: rain was anticipated, did not arrive, and dry-weather runners had better pace late in the race. It is evidence about that event’s closing stages—not a general performance law.
Historical context: a weather-affected long race
Formula E has previously linked unusual weather to a notably long race. In a Season 10 race-weekend explainer, the championship cited a Season 9 race time of 2 hours, 13 minutes and 56.532 seconds as the longest race at that time, associating the duration with “crazy London weather.” This is a historical race-time example, not a wet-weather performance statistic or a claim about the current record. Formula E’s Season 10 race-weekend explainer supplies that context.
