How fast was the life-size LEGO McLaren P1?
McLaren’s account gives the replica a maximum speed of up to 50 kph, which converts to about 31 mph. That is the best-supported figure for the car; the claim that it could hit almost 40 mph is not established by the official accounts cited here. No independent speed test is reported, so treat 50 kph as McLaren’s stated capability rather than a verified test result. McLaren Racing’s build account
Did Lando Norris drive it around Silverstone?
Yes. LEGO says McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris completed a lap of the 5.891 km (3.66-mile) Silverstone circuit in the fully drivable, full-size replica in September 2024. Norris described the drive as “Awesome. It was super nice.” LEGO’s September 12, 2024 announcement
What made the replica a working car?
This was an engineering project built jointly by LEGO and McLaren Automotive, not an oversized display model. Its basic chassis and axles used a steel construction. A LEGO Technic core connected to that structure, with a network of connected Technic elements forming the exterior skin and recreating the P1’s curves. McLaren says no glue was used and the connected elements stayed together through the Silverstone lap.

LEGO reports that eight motor packs, each with 96 LEGO Power Functions motors, provided 768 motors to imitate the original P1’s V8. The build also used Technic Function batteries and an electric-car battery. The official accounts describe working steering, suspension and brakes, along with electric propulsion. How big and complex was the build?
LEGO’s project figures describe a car made from hundreds of thousands of elements, with development and construction spanning thousands of hours. These are figures reported by the collaborators, not independently audited statistics.

The separate 1:8 LEGO Technic set
LEGO does sell a smaller model: Technic McLaren P1 set 42172. It is a 1:8-scale, 3,893-piece building set—not the life-size vehicle and not equipped with the replica’s 768-motor propulsion system. LEGO lists a 7-speed gearbox with two shifter drums, suspension, a V8 piston engine, an adjustable rear wing and opening dihedral doors. LEGO’s July 2024 announcement
LEGO announced the set for release on August 1, 2024, at launch prices of €449.99, £389.99 and $449.99. Those are historical launch prices, not confirmation of current price or availability.
