Farmers and ranchers use off-road vehicles to check livestock and property, repair fences, control weeds, carry tools and feed, and move small loads. The right fit depends on the specific machine, terrain, task, passengers, cargo, attachments, and operator training—not simply whether it is labeled an ATV or UTV.
What farm and ranch jobs can an off-road vehicle handle?
ATVs and UTVs can make frequent trips around a property easier, especially when a task requires reaching remote areas or carrying equipment. Colorado State University’s High Plains Intermountain Center for Agricultural Health and Safety reports that Montana ranch focus groups identified animal handling, fence building and repair, weed control or spraying, and general transportation as common uses. Kansas State University Research and Extension also describes livestock checks, spraying weeds, and UTVs carrying tools, feed, and calves.
- Livestock work: Check animals and move supplies or feed. Use the vehicle only in a way suited to the animal-handling task and the machine.
- Fence work: Carry tools and materials to repair or build fencing.
- Weed control: Reach treatment areas with a compatible sprayer, while following pesticide-label directions and safe operating practices.
- Property and crop checks: Travel between fields, pasture, and other areas to inspect conditions.
- General transport: Move people in designated seats, or carry tools, feed, and other small loads within the vehicle’s limits.
These are examples, not a guarantee that every vehicle can do every job. Confirm that its design, capacity, tires, terrain suitability, and approved attachments match the work.
How do ATV and UTV roles differ?
An ATV is commonly a compact, single-rider machine used to travel around a property, check livestock, or perform work such as spraying. A UTV is typically more cargo-oriented, with designated seats and a cargo bed; many models include seat belts and rollover protection. Those design differences can make a UTV a more practical choice when a task involves carrying equipment or more than one designated occupant.

Do not assume a category name establishes a particular vehicle’s capacity or safety equipment. Before choosing a machine for a job, check its manual and manufacturer documentation for:
- Number of designated occupants and required restraints
- Payload and towing limits
- Approved attachments and mounting instructions
- Terrain and slope guidance
- Protective features and operating controls
What should you consider when spraying from an ATV?
A compatible ATV sprayer can support spot spraying and other weed-control work, but liquid and equipment change how the machine handles. Montana State University Extension recommends balancing the load, choosing a system with the lowest practical center of gravity, and using an internally baffled tank to reduce liquid surges. Match the sprayer’s loaded weight and mounting arrangement to the vehicle manual.

- EXPANDABLE TOWING CAPACITY: Designed with a rear hitch for connecting additional same-model yard carts only, this yard cart helps increase hauling capacity when more space is needed for outdoor tasks
- REMOVABLE SIDE RAILS: This garden trailer includes durable steel side rails to help secure loads during transport. Remove the rails easily for convenient loading and compact storage
- HEAVY-DUTY STEEL BED CONSTRUCTION: Built with a reinforced steel frame and 500 lb load capacity, this ATV trailer provides reliable support for hauling yard debris, tools, firewood, and outdoor materials
- ONE-PULL DUMPING DESIGN: The yard trailer features a quick-release dumping mechanism for easier unloading. A front handle helps simplify attachment and maneuvering during yard work
- 13" PNEUMATIC ALL-TERRAIN TIRES: Equipped with 13-inch air-filled tires, this dump trailer provides smoother transport across grass, gravel, mud, and uneven terrain for outdoor hauling tasks
- Use rear-mounted booms or other equipment designed to reduce pesticide exposure to the operator; keep booms low.
- Do not ride a moving ATV while spraying with a hand-held wand. If using a wand, stop the ATV before spraying.
- Consider speed, wind, terrain, and liquid movement, and follow the pesticide label.
- Flush tanks appropriately after use, following the equipment instructions and pesticide-label requirements.
Extension guidance supports the sprayer category and these design considerations; it does not establish that any particular brand or model will fit a given ATV.

Farm routes can include washouts, rocks, ditches, embankments, and uneven ground. Survey unfamiliar terrain before driving, plan a route around hazards, slow down on rough surfaces, and make smooth turns. Training and the specific owner’s manual matter: use them to learn the machine’s controls, limits, approved attachments, and maintenance requirements.

- HEAVY-DUTY HAULING: Move up to 2,200 lb of firewood, logs, rocks, soil, mulch and farm supplies; this ATV dump trailer turns an ATV, UTV or compact tractor into a capable off-road utility hauler
- BUILT-IN BOOM LIFT: Lift loads up to 300 lb from either side; the adjustable boom and stabilizer legs help one operator load logs, landscape rocks, pallets and balled trees with less manual handling
- WINCH-ASSISTED DUMPING: Raise and empty loads up to 400 lb; the tow-behind dump trailer helps unload dirt, gravel, compost, manure and debris with less shoveling
- TANDEM OFF-ROAD AXLE: Pivoting tandem wheels walk over roots, ruts and uneven ground while the articulating hitch lets the tow vehicle and trailer move independently across farms, woodlots and trails
- CONVERTIBLE CARGO BED: Remove the front and rear panels for long logs, lumber and fence posts, or use the 38.7cu. ft. steel bed for bulk material; the 2-inch ball coupler fits compatible ATV, UTV and tractor hitches
Carry people and cargo as designed
- Keep an ATV to its intended single rider; do not add passengers. Wear a helmet, eye protection, long sleeves, pants, and sturdy footwear.
- UTV occupants should ride only in designated seats and wear seat belts. Never carry people in the cargo area.
- Secure cargo and stay within the manufacturer’s load and towing limits. Account for how cargo or a liquid tank changes handling and stability.
Match the task and equipment to the machine
Before taking on a job, consider travel distance, occupant needs, cargo or towing, terrain and slopes, attachment compatibility, loaded center of gravity, protective design, and operator experience. A vehicle that can reach a work area may still be unsuitable for the load, attachment, or conditions there.
Follow the applicable instructions
General safety principles do not replace the owner’s manual, pesticide label, training, or local law. Registration, road access, age restrictions, and any farm exemptions vary by jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply where the vehicle will be operated. Agricultural safety centers and extension services offer training and educational resources.
