A speed-trap number cannot tell you why a Formula 1 car is slow. Teams compare equivalent laps and track segments, then use telemetry and performance patterns to distinguish among aerodynamic drag and setup, power-unit or energy deployment, and corner-exit traction or conditions. The reasoning is different in 2026, when active front and rear wings and a changed energy-management context make season-specific comparisons essential.
Why a speed-trap reading is not a diagnosis
Maximum speed is the result of what happened before and during the straight. A car may reach the speed trap slowly because it left the preceding corner at lower speed, accelerated less strongly, encountered more drag, or used available power differently. A single speed figure cannot separate those causes.

Teams have access to telemetry—Formula 1 defines it as “Real-time data that can be used by a team to analyse a car’s performance while it is out on track.” Public timing and speed traces show only part of the picture; they do not reveal a team’s full telemetry, power-unit maps, drag measurements or confidential diagnostic process. Start with a fair comparison
Before attributing a gap to the car, compare like with like. The following are useful comparison axes inferred from the factors that affect performance, not a published universal team checklist:

The AD310 is not only portable, but also accurate and fast in performance. Moreover, it covers various car brands and is suitable for people who just need a code reader to check their car
- Use the same circuit and session, and comparable laps or runs.
- Note tyre compound and age, fuel or run phase where known, and whether either car had clean air or a tow.
- Account for weather, track grip and track evolution.
- Compare straight-entry speed, corner-exit speed, the acceleration profile, later straight speed, corner speed and sector time—not just the highest speed.
- For 2026, include the aerodynamic mode and energy-deployment context.
These details matter because a car with a tow or a faster corner exit can post a higher speed without having less drag or more power. Formula 1’s glossary also identifies tyre compounds, weather and track conditions as factors affecting traction. Formula 1 glossary
Locate where the speed gap begins
Divide the comparison into corner exit, early-straight acceleration and the later part of the straight. The shape and timing of the gap help narrow the questions to investigate, but they do not prove a cause.

If the gap is already present at corner exit
Look first at the preceding corner: exit speed, traction, tyre state and grip. A car that starts the straight slower has less speed to carry forward, even if its performance farther down the straight is otherwise comparable.

If one car stops gaining speed sooner
Drag and available power both remain possible explanations. A plateau or smaller speed gain is a clue to investigate alongside the full acceleration trace and other telemetry, not proof that the car has excessive drag or less engine power.
Test the aerodynamic setup against corner performance
Downforce helps a car generate grip in corners, while aerodynamic drag slows it on straights. The setup is a compromise shaped by the circuit and the total lap-time trade-off: a straight-line gain may come at the cost of cornering performance.

McLaren Aerodynamics Specialist Emel Cankaya described the contrast this way: “If a car spends a lot of time on straights, like in Monza, you need low drag.” She also explained that a smaller rear wing reduces drag, while a larger rear wing can help in Monaco’s low-speed corners. That illustrates why a speed-trap result alone is not enough to label a car “draggy”; it must be considered alongside its corner performance. Formula 1, F1 Explains

Consider power delivery and energy deployment
Acceleration differences can be consistent with different power delivery or energy deployment, but they do not establish an engine or power-unit deficit. The 2026 context matters: the FIA describes active front and rear wing flaps opening in Straight Mode to reduce drag and switching to a higher-downforce Corner Mode. It says the drag reduction also supports energy efficiency as the power units rely more heavily on electrical energy. FIA: 2026 technical regulations

Formula One World Championship Limited’s 2025 terminology update describes the 2026 MGU-K power increase from 120 kW to 350 kW. That is a rules-summary figure, not a measurement of a particular car’s output or proof of how a team deployed energy on a given lap. The same update describes downforce as approximately 15–30% lower and drag as up to 40% lower; those are public summary figures, not team-specific results. Formula 1 terminology update
Check traction, tyres and track conditions
A car that struggles to put power down on corner exit can carry less speed onto the straight. Traction can be affected by power-unit settings, tyre compounds, weather and track conditions, according to Formula 1’s glossary. That is why a straight-line deficit should not be attributed to the engine before exit speed and grip have been considered. Formula 1 glossary
Read 2026 rules figures in context
Published percentages refer to different summaries and should not be combined as if they were measurements of one current car. The FIA’s 2024 initial rules announcement gave design-summary figures of 30% lower downforce and 55% lower drag; Formula One World Championship Limited’s 2025 summary instead described approximately 15–30% lower downforce and up to 40% lower drag. Neither set establishes the performance of a specific 2026 car. FIA: 2026 technical regulations Formula 1 terminology update
