How Elon Musk’s Politics Reshaped Tesla’s Brand—and Its Reputation

Tesla’s reputation, purchase consideration and repeat-customer loyalty weakened as Elon Musk became more politically prominent, though competition, production and product factors also shaped the decline.

Tesla’s reputation has fallen sharply as Elon Musk became more politically prominent and harder to separate from the company. The evidence points to political entanglement as an important contributor, not a complete explanation: surveys show weaker public sentiment and purchase consideration, while registration data show a steep drop and partial recovery in customer loyalty. Competition, Tesla’s aging lineup and lost production also mattered.

What “toxic” means in Tesla’s case

“Toxic” is a metaphor for a brand association that has become a liability, not a measurable category. Tesla built its identity around stylish, high-performance electric cars and a climate-oriented vision. Over time, Musk’s public persona became closely tied to the company. When he took increasingly partisan positions, that association made Tesla’s reputation more politically charged.

There is evidence for each link in that explanation, but no single survey or sales figure proves that Musk alone caused Tesla’s decline. The strongest quantitative evidence here concerns the United States; it should not be treated as a complete picture of opinion in every market.

How far Tesla’s reputation fell

The Axios Harris Poll 100 ranking gives a clear measure of the change in overall corporate reputation: Tesla placed 8th in 2021, 63rd in 2024 and 95th out of 100 in 2025. These are annual reputation rankings, not sales results. In 2025 Tesla ranked last on character and near the bottom on ethics and citizenship. In the 2024 results, its rankings for products and services, vision and growth were comparatively stronger than its placements for character, trust and ethics. The contrast suggests that the company’s reputational weakness was not simply a judgment that its cars had become poor products. Axios’s 2025 account of the Harris Poll and its 2024 account describe the rankings and their dimensions.

A separate AP-NORC survey offers a snapshot of public sentiment. Among 1,158 U.S. adults surveyed June 5–9, 2025, 57% had an unfavorable impression of Musk, about half had a negative view of Tesla, and roughly a third viewed Tesla favorably. Ford and GM were viewed favorably by about six in ten respondents, and Toyota by 72%. The survey used AP-NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak panel; its overall margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points. These are dated opinions, not purchase records. AP-NORC’s survey report provides the methodology and findings.

Why Musk’s reputation could transfer to Tesla

The link between Musk and Tesla is unusually strong in consumer perception. Reuters reported that Caliber found 83% of Americans associated Musk with Tesla. In the same reporting, Caliber’s measure of Tesla purchase consideration fell from 70% in November 2021 to 31% in February 2024. Consideration means stated potential interest in buying, not a completed purchase or a forecast of sales. Reuters’s report on the Caliber findings connected the decline in consideration partly to Musk’s increasingly polarizing public and political profile, while noting other possible influences, including high interest rates.

That strong association creates a plausible reputational mechanism: people who object to a CEO’s conduct or politics may transfer some of that reaction to the company, even if they distinguish the CEO from the cars. Axios described Tesla as having been defined by its CEO and linked its reputation slide to Musk’s Twitter takeover and controversial political commentary, alongside other business and legal challenges. Those observations support an explanation, not an experiment isolating the effect of any one statement or political act.

What customer behavior shows—and what it does not

Surveyed interest and observed repeat purchases are different measures. Reuters reported S&P Global Mobility registration analysis showing Tesla household loyalty reached 73% in June 2024, fell to 49.9% in March 2025 and recovered to 57.4% in May 2025. These figures describe U.S. household vehicle-registration behavior in the specified months; they are not the share of all drivers who like Tesla. The decline began in July 2024, after Musk endorsed Donald Trump, and continued through the period of his government role. The timing is consistent with political backlash playing a part, but timing alone does not establish sole causation. S&P Global Mobility analyst Tom Libby told Reuters, “I’ve never seen this rapid of a decline in such a short period of time,” referring to the loyalty drop. Reuters’s report on S&P Global Mobility’s analysis also cites product and production factors.

Political association did not translate into an obvious, lasting gain among conservative buyers. Semafor reported in July 2025 that a Slingshot Strategies survey of 8,000 consumers found Republican respondents were 11 percentage points less likely to say they would buy a Tesla than in April, before Musk’s break with Trump. This is poll-based stated propensity, not observed purchasing. Slingshot Strategies pollster Evan Roth Smith told Semafor: “What he’s done by wrapping Tesla into his political adventures and, now, misadventures is very dangerous for the brand.” That is Smith’s interpretation of the survey, not a neutral finding. Semafor’s report provides the survey context.

Why politics is not the whole sales story

Tesla also faced an aging model lineup and tougher electric-vehicle competition. Reuters reported several weeks of lost production while factories were retooled for the refreshed Model Y. These factors can affect purchases and loyalty regardless of how consumers view Musk. On an April earnings call, Musk said Tesla did not see a demand reduction absent macroeconomic issues. That comment is the company leader’s account of demand, not independent proof that political reaction had no effect. Reuters’s loyalty report discusses these competing explanations.

A separate estimate puts a possible scale on the partisan effect, but it requires particular caution. In October 2025, Reuters summarized a Yale economists’ National Bureau of Economic Research working paper. The researchers estimated that U.S. Tesla sales from October 2022 through April 2025 would have been 67% to 83% higher—about 1 million to 1.26 million additional vehicles—in a modeled scenario without the “Musk partisan effect.” They also estimated competitor electric and hybrid sales were 17% to 22% higher as buyers shifted. This is a model-based counterfactual, not a count of identifiable lost customers or settled consensus; the result depends on the paper’s assumptions. Reuters’s summary of the working paper reports the estimate.

How to read the evidence

The measures describe different stages of a possible brand effect, so they should not be treated as interchangeable:

  • Reputation rankings capture broad judgments of the company across attributes such as character, ethics and trust.
  • Favorability surveys record respondents’ impressions at a particular time; they do not show what those people bought.
  • Purchase consideration and stated propensity measure reported interest, not completed transactions.
  • Registration-based loyalty tracks whether households repeat with Tesla, but does not by itself explain why they stayed or left.
  • Modeled counterfactuals estimate a hypothetical outcome under specified assumptions; they are not directly observed sales.

Taken together, the evidence supports a careful conclusion: Musk’s political visibility made Tesla’s CEO-brand link a greater reputational risk, and U.S. opinion, consideration and loyalty measures worsened during the period examined. The evidence does not establish that politics explains every change in sales, that every dissatisfied respondent changed buying behavior, or that the same pattern applies worldwide.
