An electric-car battery warranty can cover a defect, capacity falling below a stated threshold, or both—but the terms depend on the vehicle’s make, model, model year, market, in-service date and warranty booklet. Gradual battery-capacity loss is expected with time and use; it does not, by itself, mean the battery is defective or eligible for replacement. To know what protection applies, check the warranty for the specific vehicle and confirm its in-service date, mileage, battery-health measurement process and remedy.
What does an electric-car battery warranty cover?
A traction-battery warranty is a promise that applies for a defined period or mileage, subject to the terms for a particular vehicle. It may cover defects in materials or workmanship, capacity loss below a stated minimum, or both. Those are different kinds of protection: a pack can lose some capacity without having a defect, while a defect claim may be covered even if the battery still holds more than a stated capacity threshold.

Do not assume that a headline such as “eight-year battery warranty” means every battery problem is covered for eight years, or that the battery will be replaced if its range falls by a certain amount. The warranty booklet sets the covered conditions, how a claim is assessed and what the manufacturer may do to resolve it. Limits may be expressed as time, mileage, or whichever comes first.

For a specific car, the governing evidence is the warranty document that applies to its model year and market, paired with the vehicle’s in-service date and odometer. A model name alone may not identify the applicable terms: equipment, configuration, delivery date and country can matter.

How degradation differs from a covered failure
Lithium-ion traction batteries lose capacity over time and with use. Less available capacity can mean less energy stored at a full charge and, in turn, less practical driving range. The size and pace of that change are not established by a single universal rate; the reviewed manufacturer guidance describes variation with environmental conditions and use.
Capacity loss is not the same as battery failure. In a warranty that covers only defects, ordinary gradual fade may not qualify for a repair. Where the terms promise a minimum retained capacity or state of health (SoH), falling below that specific threshold may create a capacity-related claim, but the booklet still governs the test and remedy. A threshold is a contractual trigger in that warranty, not a prediction that every battery will reach it or an automatic promise to install a new pack.
SoH is a measure of a battery’s condition relative to a reference capacity. It should not be treated as a direct range reading: driving range also depends on conditions and energy use, and the reviewed sources do not establish a universal conversion from SoH percentage to miles or kilometres of range. A dashboard range estimate by itself is therefore not a definitive battery-capacity test.

BMW of North America’s warranty information states: “Due to its inherent technical design, the high-voltage lithium-ion battery’s capacity will decrease over time and with use.” That is a manufacturer explanation of expected change, not an independently measured degradation rate.
How long is an EV battery warranty?
There is no single term that applies to every electric car. The examples below illustrate how manufacturer and regulatory terms differ; they are not interchangeable or a substitute for the exact booklet. The U.S. manufacturer examples relate to their specified vehicles or programs, while the Volkswagen example concerns UK terms.

These examples show why a warranty headline is not enough. A term may protect against defects but not promise a particular retained capacity; another may state a capacity threshold only for a defined vehicle group or market. A mileage ceiling can also end coverage before the calendar term expires.

What California’s battery-warranty rule requires
For vehicles within the California Air Resources Board regulation’s scope, the manufacturer must warrant covered BEV and PHEV batteries against defects that cause SoH to fall below a stated level for the applicable period: 70% for model years 2026 through 2030, and 75% for model year 2031 and later. The period is eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Confirm that the vehicle and model year fall within the regulation and read the applicable warranty for the measurement method, exclusions and remedy. The 70% and 75% figures are regulatory coverage thresholds for those cohorts; they do not describe the typical condition of a battery at eight years.
How often do EV batteries get replaced?
A battery replacement due to failure is different from gradual capacity fade. In an April 22, 2024 summary, the U.S. Department of Energy reported that a Recurrent study of about 15,000 plug-in electric vehicles found battery replacements due to failure in 1.5% of model-year 2011–2023 vehicles, excluding replacements associated with recalls. For model years 2016–2023, DOE reported the rate was well under 1%.

Those figures describe failure-related replacements in the study population, not ordinary degradation, the share of batteries below a warranty threshold, or a forecast for every newer battery design. DOE notes that observations for newer vehicles will improve as more years of data accumulate. A low historical failure-replacement rate does not mean capacity never declines, and it cannot establish the health of an individual used car.
How to check coverage on a particular EV
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the VIN, model, model year, market, delivery or in-service date, odometer reading and battery configuration if the manufacturer distinguishes configurations.
- Get the applicable warranty booklet. Use the version for that model year and market, not a generic warranty summary or terms for a similar model. Ask the dealer or manufacturer to confirm that the document applies to the VIN.
- Separate defect protection from capacity protection. Look for what counts as a defect and whether the warranty separately promises a minimum capacity or SoH. If a threshold is stated, note its percentage and whether it is defined as retained capacity, net energy content or another measure.
- Check the clock and mileage limit. Establish the in-service date and current odometer. Determine whether the stated duration ends at a specified year or mileage, whichever occurs first, and whether any separate component or program has different limits.
- Read transfer, exclusion and maintenance terms. Verify whether coverage continues for a subsequent owner, what conditions can exclude a claim, and whether required maintenance or records apply. Do not assume the answer from the vehicle’s remaining basic warranty.
- Find the claim test and remedy. Ask how the manufacturer measures battery health, where the test is performed, what result qualifies and whether the remedy may be repair, module replacement, pack replacement or another corrective action. A warranty threshold does not, by itself, establish that a whole new pack will be installed.
- Keep the confirmation and diagnostic record. For a claim or purchase, retain the booklet, VIN-specific written confirmation, date and mileage, and any manufacturer or dealer battery-health result. These make it easier to distinguish a range concern from a warranty-defined capacity result.
What to check before buying a used EV
For a used vehicle, the key question is not only “How long is the warranty?” but what protection remains for this particular VIN and next owner. The original in-service date determines how much time has elapsed; the odometer determines how much of any mileage allowance remains. Transfer rules can affect whether the next owner receives the same coverage, so have the manufacturer or dealer confirm it rather than relying on a seller’s general statement.

- Confirm the threshold, official measurement procedure and where an authorized test can be obtained.
- Ask what exclusions or service conditions apply and what remedy is available if the test qualifies.
- For any battery-health inspection, ask what was measured, by whom, under what procedure and on what date; do not treat a dashboard estimate alone as a definitive capacity result.
These checks matter especially when the car is close to either its time or mileage limit. They also help separate a useful battery-health assessment from a blanket assurance that a used pack is “good.” The reviewed sources do not establish one universal inspection standard or a universal replacement price.

What happens when the warranty expires?
After coverage ends, a capacity concern or failure may become the owner’s responsibility unless another applicable protection exists. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says manufacturers typically do not publish battery-replacement pricing and that an out-of-warranty replacement is expected to be a significant expense. Because cost depends on the vehicle and repair, a generic figure would not reliably tell an owner what a specific replacement will cost; request a dated estimate for the exact car.
DOE also describes second-life uses for lithium-ion batteries, while noting that their economic viability is still evolving. That broader possibility does not establish that a particular vehicle pack can be reused, repaired or replaced economically. For a real repair decision, obtain a model-specific diagnosis and estimate rather than inferring the remedy from general battery information.
Sources and market boundaries
The examples and guidance here draw on Tesla’s U.S. warranty page, BMW USA warranty information, Ford U.S. owner-manual content, Volkswagen UK warranty terms, the California Air Resources Board regulation, and U.S. Department of Energy consumer and statistical summaries. Their coverage differs by vehicle cohort, country and legal scope. Because warranty terms can change and vehicle cohorts have different booklets, the VIN-specific manufacturer document is the controlling reference for an individual car.
