This capability is called vehicle-to-vehicle communication, or V2V. It is separate from autonomous driving: not every car has V2V, and the available evidence does not establish that self-driving systems universally need messages from other cars.
How do autonomous cars talk to each other?
In a standardized V2V system, one vehicle transmits a safety message and another equipped vehicle receives it over a wireless connection. One specified example is the SAE J3161/1 LTE-V2X profile: an onboard V2V safety system sends and receives SAE J2735 Basic Safety Messages (BSMs) over a PC5 sidelink. A receiving system can use the information for a safety application, such as awareness or a warning.

The simple version is: a vehicle shares information about its state, another vehicle may receive it, and an onboard application may use it to help inform the driver or vehicle system. That description applies to equipped systems, not every car on the road. A message may not be present or correct, and a standard does not guarantee that every nearby receiver gets every transmission.

- The message definition: SAE J2735 is a dictionary of V2X message structures and data elements. It defines the format and contents of messages and is designed to work independently of the communications protocol beneath it.
- The communications link and profile: This describes how a system transmits and receives messages. In the SAE J3161/1 profile, the link is a PC5 sidelink for LTE-V2X. The SAE J2945/1 profile instead specifies light-vehicle V2V safety communications using a DSRC link and IEEE 1609 / IEEE 802.11 standards.
Keeping those layers distinct matters: a message dictionary is not itself a radio technology. A vehicle’s ability to understand a particular message format does not, by itself, mean it can communicate over every link or interoperate with every deployment. The applicable profile and implementation matter too.
What happens when one vehicle sends a message?
- An equipped vehicle creates a message. Its onboard V2V system prepares a standardized safety message describing information about the vehicle’s state. SAE J2735 supplies the message-set dictionary used in the LTE-V2X example; the catalog summary does not enumerate every data element for this article.
- The system sends it over a specified link. Under SAE J3161/1, the message travels over the PC5 sidelink. The standard’s catalog description identifies requirements for an onboard V2V safety communications system, including standards profiles, functional requirements and performance requirements.
- Another equipped system may receive it. The receiving vehicle can use the information in a safety application, for example to support awareness or produce a warning. Whether a message is received and what an application does with it depend on the deployment and system; the standard’s existence is not proof that every nearby car is participating.
- The message is one input, not a complete account of the road. It can add information from another equipped vehicle, but the available sources do not establish that V2V messages are always available or correct, or that they replace a vehicle’s other ways of perceiving its surroundings.
As an illustration, if two equipped vehicles exchange safety information, one vehicle’s system might use the received information to support a warning. That example describes the role of V2V; it does not promise a particular warning, response time, or crash outcome. Those depend on the system and situation.
How do DSRC and LTE-V2X compare?
DSRC and LTE-V2X/C-V2X are two standards paths readers may encounter in V2V discussions. The cited standards describe different profiles and communication links; the available catalog summaries do not support a universal ranking for speed, safety, range, reliability or availability.

The standards summaries are not a substitute for the full standards text or a current inventory of deployments. Is V2V the same as self-driving?
No. V2V is a communication capability; autonomous driving describes a vehicle’s driving automation. A connected vehicle can exchange messages without being self-driving, and an automated vehicle is not automatically dependent on messages from other vehicles. The cited sources do not establish that all automated driving systems use V2V or require it to operate.
V2V may give an equipped system another source of awareness, but a message should not be treated as a guarantee that the road is clear or that another vehicle will behave as expected. The available evidence does not show that V2V alone prevents crashes, makes a vehicle safe, or substitutes for the vehicle’s other safety functions.

Where does V2V fit in V2X?
V2V is one part of vehicle-to-everything communication, usually shortened to V2X. The U.S. Department of Transportation describes V2X as including communication between vehicles (V2V), vehicles and roadside infrastructure (V2I), and vehicles and pedestrians or other vulnerable road users (V2P). That wider frame matters because connected-vehicle systems may receive information from sources other than another car.
These categories describe who or what communicates; they do not mean every vehicle or road user has compatible equipment. A V2V message specifically concerns communication between equipped vehicles. Infrastructure or vulnerable-road-user communications are distinct V2X paths, not proof that a given car can access them.
Do self-driving cars need to communicate with other cars?
The standards show how V2V can be implemented, not that it is a universal requirement for automated driving. A vehicle may be designed to use V2V as an additional information source, but the sources cited here do not establish that every automated vehicle relies on it, nor do they show that every vehicle on a road transmits compatible messages.

- Easy to Install: Car side seat gap filler is easy to install, simply insert it into the gap between the seat and the center console, gap seat filler for car can fit tightly without affecting the normal adjustment of the seat and the use of the seat belt
- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
That distinction is practically important. A driver or passenger should not assume that a car will receive another vehicle’s message, that every vehicle has the necessary equipment, or that the absence of a warning means no hazard is present. V2V is a capability for equipped systems, not a universal communications network covering all traffic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is available to U.S. consumers?
NHTSA’s consumer-facing Automated Vehicle Safety page says no vehicle currently available for sale in the United States is fully automated or “self-driving,” and says vehicles currently for sale require driver attention. It distinguishes driver-assistance features from higher levels of automation and describes testing and pilot operation in limited, restricted locations and conditions. This is U.S.-specific consumer-market context, not a claim about every country or every test program.
That scope also helps separate three different questions: whether a vehicle has a driver-assistance feature, whether it communicates with other vehicles, and whether it is fully automated. One does not establish the others. A feature label or a V2V standard alone cannot tell a buyer that a particular vehicle is fully self-driving or equipped for a particular V2V profile.

What real-world results do the cited sources establish?
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS Deployment Evaluation resource reports that a Utah DSRC corridor deployment improved transit reliability by 12 percent and reduced late bus arrivals by 40 percent. The result is attributed to that specific deployment; the page extract does not state a publication year. It is not a general estimate of V2V performance, a measurement of self-driving cars, or evidence that all deployments produce the same outcomes.
NHTSA reports 39,254 motor-vehicle crash deaths in 2024. That is general U.S. road-safety context, not a measure of V2V effectiveness. Neither figure establishes that V2V prevents a particular crash or quantifies a typical benefit for an individual driver.
What should a driver infer from V2V?
- If a system is equipped: it may exchange standardized safety information with other compatible, equipped systems and use received information in an awareness or warning application.
- If a nearby car is not equipped or compatible: the cited standards do not make it a participant in that exchange.
- If no message or warning appears: that does not establish that the road is hazard-free or that other vehicles are communicating.
- If a message is received: it is an additional information input, not a guarantee that the information is complete, current or correct.
The useful mental model is a limited, standards-based exchange between compatible systems—not cars sharing everything they sense, a universal network of all traffic, or a substitute for a driver’s attention.
