They did not show an unaided remote takeover of a Mercedes-Benz on the road. Tencent Security Keen Lab’s May 2021 assessment describes a chain that began with physical access to an MBUX head unit and later enabled limited remote functions in an experimental setup. Those functions included changing interior-light colors and displaying images on the infotainment screen—not steering or braking the car.
How the reported attack worked
Keen Lab’s report describes a broad security assessment of Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system, not one simple remote break-in. Researchers gathered technical material, built a test environment, and examined attack surfaces including radio. For the head-unit chain, they explicitly say physical access came first, followed by remote access.

The researchers summarized the result this way: “We have gained first physical access and subsequently remote access to the main infotainment ECU: the head unit.” Their report says this enabled certain vehicle functions remotely, specifically changing interior-light colors and displaying images on the infotainment screen. MBUX head unit
The head unit is the main infotainment computer. In Keen Lab’s account, the researchers first gained physical access to it, then demonstrated remote access and the limited functions described above. That sequence is materially different from an attacker reaching a car remotely without prior access.

T-Box
The report separately describes compromising an internal chip in a debug-version T-Box and sending arbitrary CAN messages. A T-Box is a vehicle telematics unit; the demonstrated debug-version setup is not evidence that the same result applies to an unmodified consumer car. Nor does the report say this demonstration gave researchers remote steering or braking control.
Which vehicles or software versions were affected?
Keen Lab says MBUX debuted in the A-Class in 2018 and was later adopted in model lines including E-Class, GLE, GLS, and EQC. This is a description of where MBUX appeared, not a complete list of affected vehicles. The published material does not establish affected model years, markets, software releases, or VIN ranges, and it does not prove that every vehicle in those lines was vulnerable. The technical report’s vulnerability table names five CVE identifiers: CVE-2021-23906, CVE-2021-23907, CVE-2021-23908, CVE-2021-23909, and CVE-2021-23910. They cover HiQnet message-length and count checks, a HiQnet type-confusion issue, code execution on the T-Box SH2 MCU, and an array out-of-bounds issue in the T-Box RemoteDiagnosisApp. Multiple table entries map to CVE-2021-23907, and the report also lists findings without CVE identifiers; it should not be read as five identifiers for every listed bug. Keen Lab dates its project and disclosure timeline as follows: work began internally in March 2020; the findings and attack chains were validated in an experimental environment in November 2020; Daimler was notified in December; Daimler confirmed the findings on January 15, 2021; CVEs were requested on January 21; and new fixes began rolling out on January 30. The public summary appeared in May 2021. Keen Lab says some fixes were already available and in rollout by Daimler’s January confirmation. What Mercedes-Benz owners can establish
The public report does not identify the VINs, model years, regions, or software versions covered by the fixes. It therefore cannot establish whether a specific vehicle has the relevant updates. Owners who want to check a car should contact a Mercedes-Benz dealer or the manufacturer’s service channel with the vehicle identification number and ask whether any applicable software or service action remains outstanding.
The findings should also not be conflated with CVE-2019-19561, a separate issue involving a debug-interface misconfiguration in Mercedes-Benz HERMES 1.5 that required direct physical access. It is not one of Keen Lab’s 2021 MBUX findings. NVD entry for CVE-2019-19561
