Chinese automakers are changing the global car market by combining a huge home-market manufacturing base with growing exports and overseas assembly. Their impact is greatest in electric cars, but the consequences reach the wider industry: competitors face new price and production pressures, while tariffs, local policies and consumer demand determine where Chinese-made cars can gain ground.
Why China’s car industry now matters worldwide
China’s position rests on more than export growth. It is a large production base, a major market for new cars and the world’s leading center of electric-car manufacturing. Those roles reinforce one another: high domestic volumes support factories and supply chains, while intense competition at home gives manufacturers a reason to seek additional buyers abroad.

Production scale spans the broader car industry
China’s car production more than doubled between 2010 and 2024, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 2025. The IEA also estimated that China accounted for 40% of global car manufacturing capacity. Capacity is the ability to produce, not the number of vehicles actually made or sold, so it should not be read as a 40% share of output.

Global car sales approached 80 million in 2024, and those markets together represented more than half of sales, compared with 20% in 2000, the IEA reported. Electric and hybrid cars drove recent sales growth, while sales of pure internal-combustion-engine (ICE) cars had fallen from their 2017 peak.

Electric cars are a particularly concentrated strength
The IEA estimated that more than 70% of electric cars produced globally in 2024 were made in China. That figure concerns electric-car production, not all cars. It reflects a manufacturing ecosystem built around vehicle assembly, batteries and related supply chains, rather than a single advantage or policy.
Chinese-headquartered manufacturers accounted for around 80% of domestic car sales in China in 2024, according to the IEA. The agency links their EV competitiveness to manufacturing scale, supply chains and battery-technology development, alongside industrial policies that included low-cost loans. Its analysis does not establish that any one factor alone explains the industry’s position.
How scale shapes prices and competitive pressure
Scale can make it easier to spread factory and supply-chain costs across many vehicles, but China’s domestic market is not simply a stable base for expansion. The IEA reported that Chinese EV manufacturing capacity was about twice domestic production in its 2025 industry assessment. Fierce competition and pressure on margins create an incentive to find more buyers, while also making it difficult to assume that announced capacity will translate into profitable output.

Affordability is one visible result of the domestic market’s development. Two-thirds of battery-electric cars sold in China in 2024 were cheaper than equivalently sized ICE cars, the IEA reported in 2025. This is a comparison of vehicle prices within China and a specific size match; it does not mean every Chinese EV is cheaper than every comparable car in another country. Prices overseas also depend on shipping, duties, taxes, equipment, distribution and local competition.

For other manufacturers, the challenge is not only whether they can match a particular sticker price. It is whether they can compete across product range, production volume, battery sourcing and speed of market response. A large manufacturing base can make rapid expansion possible, but local rules, consumer preferences and charging access still affect how many vehicles buyers will choose.
Why exports are growing—and where they are going
Exports allow manufacturers to use production capacity and pursue revenue when competition at home squeezes margins. China overtook the European Union to become the largest car exporter in 2024, according to the IEA. Separately, the agency reported that China had the largest share of global electric-car exports that year: 40%, or nearly 1.25 million cars. The latter figure is EV-specific and should not be confused with exports of all cars.
In its 2026 review, the IEA estimated that Chinese electric-car exports doubled in 2025. It also reported that Chinese-made electric-car sales in Europe reached about 940,000 that year, almost 50% above 2024. At the same time, Europe’s share of Chinese electric-car export value fell to around 40%. The picture is not a simple retreat from Europe: sales there rose, while the relative importance of other destinations grew faster.

More than half of Chinese electric-car sales overseas in 2025 were outside Europe and the United States, the IEA reported. Year-on-year growth in Chinese electric-car sales was 130% in Southeast Asia, 60% in the Middle East and 55% in Latin America. These are sales of Chinese electric cars, not growth rates for each region’s entire car market.

Sales and exports are not always identical measures. The IEA’s 2026 trade chapter draws on EV Volumes, CAAM and GACC data and notes that reported exports can differ from overseas sales when exported cars remain unsold in destination markets. Inventories therefore matter: shipment growth can precede customer demand, and rising stock can become a constraint rather than evidence of durable market uptake.
How local assembly changes the route into a market
Exporting complete cars is only one way to reach buyers. Automakers can also assemble vehicles in the destination country, including from semi-knocked-down (SKD) or completely-knocked-down (CKD) kits. These approaches involve shipping vehicles in partially or fully disassembled form for final assembly locally. The IEA identifies them as ways to respond to trade measures and policies that favor local production.
In 2025, Chinese-owned overseas manufacturing capacity for both ICE and electric cars was estimated at about 1.7 million cars per year, with more than half of that footprint in Southeast Asia, according to the IEA. This is installed capacity across the two powertrain types, not actual annual output. The difference is important: the IEA estimated that capacity use for battery-electric production was around 20% in Thailand and below 15% in Indonesia that year. A factory or assembly line can exist without running near its potential.

Local production can help manufacturers navigate rules that make importing complete vehicles less attractive, but it is not a guaranteed workaround. A company still needs customers, reliable suppliers, workable production economics and compliance with local requirements. Trade policy can also change: the IEA said policies hardened in parts of Southeast Asia toward the end of 2025 and pointed to new duties in major Latin American markets as added pressure on imported Chinese electric cars. The applicable treatment varies by country, vehicle and production arrangement; there is no single tariff rate that describes all Chinese cars or markets.

Why the impact looks different from region to region
Figures for different markets often use different denominators. The share of all cars sold that were made in China is not the same as the share of electric-car demand supplied by Chinese-made EVs. The distinction helps explain why a presence can be significant in one measure and more limited in another.

Europe: competition alongside active trade policy
China’s growing presence in Europe intersects with a large local manufacturing base and changing trade conditions. ACEA reported that EU-based manufacturers supplied 73% of EU car sales in 2025; cars made in China accounted for 7%. The association also reported that Chinese imports surpassed one million units and that EU exports to China fell 43% in 2025. These figures describe a broader car trade relationship, not only the electric-car market.
Emerging markets: availability and industrial choices
In many emerging markets, imports can quickly increase the range of electric cars available. But vehicle supply alone does not ensure adoption. Charging infrastructure, import duties, incentives and goals for domestic manufacturing all shape the price a buyer sees and the role imports can play. A market can welcome more EV choices while also trying to develop local assembly or protect existing producers.

ACEA reported worldwide car registrations of 77.6 million in 2025, up 3.5% year on year, and global production of 78.7 million, up 4.2%. China’s production rose 10.4%. These all-car figures provide context for the market in which the more specific EV export and demand changes are taking place. Registrations, production and exports measure different stages of the industry; they cannot be treated as interchangeable totals.

The same distinction applies to manufacturing capacity, output, shipments and sales. Capacity describes potential production; output counts cars made; exports count vehicles shipped across borders; sales reflect vehicles sold in a market, subject to how the source defines the measure. Comparing them without their scope can make growth look larger or smaller than it is.
What could slow or redirect the shift
The next phase is not assured by the growth of the last few years. The IEA identifies rising overseas inventories and changing trade policies as constraints on Chinese electric-car exports, while also noting that export growth continued in early 2026. Both facts matter: manufacturers are still seeking overseas markets, but the pace and destination of shipments can change as stock builds or market-access rules shift.
- Trade measures: Duties and other rules can raise the cost of imported cars or make local assembly more attractive, changing the economics of a market-entry strategy.
- Inventory and demand: Cars shipped but not sold add stock in destination markets. If customer demand does not keep pace, factories may need to adjust output or export plans.
- Local production: Announced or installed capacity does not guarantee sufficient utilization, competitive costs or a dependable supply of buyers.
- Consumer conditions: Purchase prices, charging availability and vehicle suitability influence adoption, even where imports expand the choice of EVs.
For the global industry, the result is not one uniform takeover but a reshuffling of competitive pressure. Chinese manufacturers bring manufacturing scale and a strong EV position to more markets; incumbents, governments and consumers respond under different local conditions. Production, trade and assembly will continue to adjust as those conditions change.
