A longer car loan term usually lowers the required monthly payment, but it also means paying interest for longer and can leave you owing more than the car is worth for a longer stretch. To see whether a longer term is worthwhile, compare offers with the same amount financed and rate, then weigh the full borrowing cost against a payment your budget can sustain.
What a car loan term means
A loan term is the number of months scheduled for repayment. Common offers may spread repayment across different numbers of months, but a longer schedule is not automatically cheaper just because its monthly payment is smaller. With the loan amount and rate held constant, spreading repayment over more months generally lowers each scheduled payment while increasing total interest.

That trade-off is easiest to judge when the offers finance the same amount at the same rate. If the offers also differ in rate, fees, down payment, add-ons, or the amount borrowed, the difference in monthly payment cannot be attributed to the term alone. The CFPB advises shoppers to compare the amount of the loan, APR and interest rate, loan length, and payment—not only the monthly figure.

How the term changes the payment and total interest
In a fixed-payment amortizing loan, each payment covers interest and repays some principal. Early in the schedule, a larger share of each payment generally goes to interest; as the balance declines, a larger share goes to principal. Extending the term spreads repayment over more scheduled payments. That reduces the required payment, but interest continues to accrue over a longer period.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) illustrates the effect with a $20,000 loan at 4.75%. These are rounded illustrative figures, not a current market quote or a personalized estimate:
| Term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Total of payments |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 months | $597 | $1,498 | $21,498 |
| 48 months | $458 | $1,999 | $21,999 |
| 60 months | $375 | $2,508 | $22,508 |
| 72 months | $320 | $3,024 | $23,024 |
In that example, moving from 36 to 72 months lowers the quoted monthly payment by $277, while adding $1,526 in total interest. The total-of-payments figures are the $20,000 amount borrowed plus the stated interest. The payment figures are rounded to the nearest dollar, so multiplying a displayed payment by the term may not reproduce the total exactly.
The illustration isolates term length by keeping the principal and rate constant. Actual loan offers may not do that: a lender may quote a different APR, and a deal may include fees or products that change the amount financed. Check the contract figures rather than assuming a term comparison alone explains the difference.

What the payment trade-off means in practice
The table shows why a smaller monthly bill is not the same as a lower-cost loan. In the CFPB illustration, the 72-month payment is $320, compared with $375 for 60 months, but the longer schedule adds $516 in interest. Compared with 36 months, the 72-month option cuts the required payment more sharply, but the borrower pays $1,526 more in interest under the same principal and rate assumptions. The monthly relief is real; so is the higher lifetime borrowing cost.
That difference matters when you decide how much vehicle to finance. A longer term may make a particular payment fit, but it does not make the amount borrowed smaller. If the payment only works because repayment is stretched, compare a less expensive vehicle, a larger down payment, or a different amount financed before treating the longer term as the solution. Any alternative should still be judged against the complete disclosures and your total monthly transportation budget.
The CFPB’s page, “What things can I negotiate when shopping for a car or auto loan?” states: “A shorter loan term, where you make a fewer number of monthly payments, will reduce your loan cost overall. While a longer loan can reduce your monthly payment, you’ll end up paying more interest over the life of the loan.” This describes the general direction of the trade-off when the other loan assumptions are held constant; it is not a promise about a specific lender’s quote.

What negative equity is—and why term length matters
Negative equity means the loan payoff is greater than the vehicle’s current value. For example, if the payoff is $10,000 and the car is worth $8,000, the borrower has $2,000 of negative equity. If the borrower sells the vehicle for its current value, that sale would not by itself cover the payoff; the remaining shortfall still has to be addressed.

Negative equity exists during any period when the payoff remains above the vehicle’s value. A longer term can extend the time exposed to that risk because principal is scheduled to be repaid over more months. Whether a particular borrower is underwater, and for how long, depends on the loan’s balance path and the car’s changing resale value; the term alone does not establish either outcome.
This is a comparison to keep in mind throughout ownership, not just when signing. The loan payoff is the amount needed to satisfy the debt at a given point, while the car’s value is what it could reasonably sell or trade for then. If those figures are close, changes in either one may affect whether there is positive or negative equity. A general term comparison cannot tell you exactly when that gap will close because the vehicle’s future market value is uncertain.
The CFPB’s consumer guidance says a shorter term, with fewer monthly payments, reduces overall loan cost, while a longer term can reduce the monthly payment but increase interest over the loan’s life. The practical tension is that a payment may be easier to fit into a monthly budget even as the borrower pays more for the loan and may take longer to build equity.
How to compare loan offers beyond the monthly payment
Use the lender’s paperwork and Truth in Lending disclosures to compare the full credit terms. APR is the yearly cost of credit that includes interest and mandatory fees; it is not necessarily identical to the stated interest rate. The finance charge shows the dollar cost of credit under the disclosed terms, while the total of payments shows what the scheduled payments add up to.

Compare the same vehicle and, as closely as possible, the same amount financed. Record the down payment, fees, and any add-ons that affect the amount borrowed.
- Read the rate details. Note both the stated interest rate and APR. Check whether mandatory fees are included in the APR and whether the offers differ in other charges.
- Compare the term and payment schedule. Write down the number of months, payment amount, and number of scheduled payments. A lower payment may simply reflect a longer repayment period.
- Compare total borrowing cost. Review the finance charge or total interest and the total of payments. Do not infer the cheaper loan from the monthly payment alone.
- Test the household budget. Include costs outside the loan payment, such as insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and repairs where relevant. A payment that fits by itself does not prove the vehicle is affordable overall.
When the offers differ in more than term, list the differences instead of treating the payment gap as a term penalty. For instance, a lower payment could reflect a smaller amount financed or a different rate; it could also reflect a longer term. The disclosure figures help separate those effects.

For a useful side-by-side, write down the amount financed, APR, stated interest rate, term in months, scheduled monthly payment, finance charge or total interest, and total of payments. Also note any difference in down payment, fees, or add-ons. If the vehicle and amount financed are not comparable, a payment comparison can be misleading even when both offers look straightforward.
APR and interest rate answer related but different questions. The stated rate is the interest rate applied to the loan, while APR expresses the yearly cost of credit including mandatory fees. That is why the APR can differ from the stated rate. Comparing both, along with the finance charge and total of payments, can help show whether a seemingly favorable rate comes with other costs.
Negative equity when trading in a car
If you owe more than your trade-in is worth, the difference does not disappear when you replace the car. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a dealer may add the shortfall to the new loan, use some of the down payment to cover it, or do both. Rolling the shortfall into the next loan increases the amount borrowed, and the old debt can make the new loan’s path to positive equity longer.
Before agreeing to a replacement deal, establish the current loan payoff and get a realistic estimate of the vehicle’s trade-in or private-sale value. Then check how the contract handles the shortfall and how much it adds to the new amount financed. Compare the new loan’s total amount and term, not just the apparent monthly payment. The FTC recommends negotiating the shortest term you can afford when rolling negative equity into a new loan.
The FTC’s consumer guidance, “Auto Trade-Ins and Negative Equity: When You Owe More than Your Car is Worth,” warns: “The longer your loan term, the longer it will take to reach positive equity in your new car — and the more you’ll pay in interest.” In a replacement deal, the existing shortfall can raise the new balance before financing for the next vehicle is considered. A lower-looking payment does not show how much of that old debt has been carried forward.
- Ask for the payoff amount on the existing loan and identify the date through which it is valid.
- Compare that payoff with the vehicle’s expected sale or trade-in value to calculate the shortfall or equity.
- Check the new contract to see whether the shortfall is paid from a down payment, added to the new loan, or handled in another way.
- Reassess the new amount financed, APR, term, finance charge, and total of payments after the trade-in figures are included.
Do not rely on a dealer’s monthly-payment figure alone to understand the trade-in. Ask how the payoff, trade value, and any shortfall appear in the written figures, then check the resulting amount financed. If the old balance is included in the replacement loan, compare that full amount and term with an offer that does not obscure the carryover.

How to interpret reported negative-equity averages
In 2024, the CFPB reported group averages for accounts with different trade-in equity situations. Accounts financing negative equity averaged monthly payments of $626 and loan terms of 73 months. Accounts with positive trade-in equity averaged $496 per month and 67 months, while accounts with no trade-in averaged $493 and 68 months.

These are averages across groups of accounts, not a controlled comparison proving that a longer term caused a higher payment or negative equity. The groups can differ in other ways, including the amount borrowed and vehicle or contract details. Use the figures as context for how negative equity and loan terms can appear together in reported accounts, not as a prediction for an individual offer.
Choosing a term that fits your situation
There is no single term that is right for every borrower. The choice depends on what payment you can manage, the total cost of borrowing, the vehicle’s age and value, the down payment, and the rest of the offer. Some financial experts cited by the CFPB recommend five years or less; that is attributed guidance, not a universal rule or a guarantee that any particular loan is affordable.
A shorter term can reduce the time interest accrues and accelerate principal repayment, but it requires a higher scheduled payment. A longer term can make the payment more manageable month to month, but raises total interest under otherwise identical terms. If the shorter option strains your budget once insurance and running costs are included, the right response is not necessarily to accept a longer loan on the same vehicle: consider whether the amount financed, vehicle choice, or down payment can change.
Before signing, make sure you understand whether any quoted payment depends on a longer term, whether the amount financed includes optional products or a trade-in shortfall, and how much the full schedule costs. A sound comparison balances a realistic monthly budget with the total repayment obligation and the vehicle’s likely value over the time you expect to own it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a longer car loan term lower the monthly payment?
Generally, yes, when the amount financed and rate stay the same: repayment is spread across more months. But the same CFPB illustration shows that its $20,000 loan at 4.75% costs $3,024 in interest over 72 months versus $1,498 over 36 months. These rounded examples are not current quotes.

How much more interest could I pay with a longer term?
It depends on the amount financed and rate. In the CFPB’s example of $20,000 at 4.75%, interest is $1,498 at 36 months, $1,999 at 48, $2,508 at 60, and $3,024 at 72 months. Compare the finance charge or total interest in your own disclosures.
Does a longer term automatically mean I will have negative equity?
No. Negative equity means the payoff exceeds the car’s value. A longer term can leave you exposed to that risk for longer because principal is repaid over more months, but the outcome depends on your balance and the vehicle’s resale value over time.
What should I compare besides the monthly payment?
Compare the amount financed, APR and stated interest rate, term, payment schedule, finance charge or total interest, and total of payments. Include differences in down payment, fees, and add-ons, and make sure the payment works alongside insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and repairs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat happens if I trade in a car with negative equity?
The FTC says a dealer may add the shortfall to the replacement loan, use some of your down payment to cover it, or do both. Confirm the old payoff and realistic vehicle value, then check how the shortfall affects the new amount financed, term, and total cost.
The Bottom Line
A longer term can ease the monthly payment, but under otherwise identical terms it increases total interest and may prolong the time your loan balance is above the car’s value. Compare APR, amount financed, term, finance charge, and total of payments, and account for the full cost of owning the vehicle—not just the payment.
