BYD makes electric cars through a manufacturing system that includes its own battery research, design and production, vehicle production at scale, and efforts to source materials closer to new markets. The company’s disclosures show how batteries fit into that system, but they do not provide a complete current inventory of factories or independently measured comparisons with other automakers.
Why batteries are central to BYD’s manufacturing
BYD describes its battery business as spanning independent research and development, design and manufacturing. The company says those capabilities serve vehicles as well as energy storage, consumer electronics and rail applications. That makes battery production a core part of BYD’s manufacturing story, rather than simply an outside supply step; the description is BYD’s own account of its capabilities.

A dated example is the Chongqing FinDreams Battery factory. When BYD opened the site to media and industry guests in June 2020, it called the facility the only Blade Battery production base at that time and reported annual capacity of 20 GWh.

How battery and vehicle design connect
BYD describes its cell-to-body technology as integrating the battery system into the vehicle body so that it serves both as an energy unit and as a structural component. This is a description of the design approach, not an independently verified measure of performance or proof of an advantage over other manufacturers.

That connection helps explain why battery manufacturing matters to the vehicle factory: battery design and vehicle structure are related parts of the product. The available company descriptions do not, however, detail the complete assembly sequence at a BYD car plant or establish how much of each vehicle is made in-house.
What the production figures show—and what they do not
BYD’s 2025 figures show the scale it reported reaching: its 15-millionth new-energy vehicle (NEV) was produced at Jinan, and the company reported 4.182 million vehicles produced during the first eleven months of that year. These are company-reported milestones and totals. The period figure does not identify production by individual factory or provide a plant-by-plant capacity comparison.

A separate BYD supplier announcement in 2025 said the company had more than 30 industrial parks in several countries. That is a company statement; the announcement does not define the count in enough detail to treat it as a precise tally of vehicle factories. Industrial parks should not be assumed to be equivalent to car-assembly plants.

BYD announced voestalpine as a sheet-steel supplier for its planned passenger-car facility in Szeged, Hungary. The company linked regional sourcing to localized production. The announcement documents a supplier relationship associated with a planned facility; it does not establish that the plant has since started production or state its current output.
This example illustrates a supply-chain dimension of factory expansion: a manufacturer can seek regional suppliers alongside building production capacity in a new market. It does not establish how much of a BYD vehicle’s material or component supply is local in Hungary or elsewhere.

The documented picture is of a company that reports substantial battery capabilities, integrates battery and vehicle design in its cell-to-body approach, and has reported large production milestones while pursuing localized sourcing. The evidence supports describing those elements and their connection; it does not establish a measured manufacturing advantage over competitors.

There is not enough here to rank BYD against other automakers on factory automation, labor productivity, current capacity by plant, or the share of a vehicle made in-house. Those comparisons require matched measurements and clearly defined methods. Nor do the cited announcements provide a current, complete account of BYD’s factory network or the operating status and output of every overseas facility.
