British coverage largely hailed Max Verstappen’s drive from 17th on the grid to victory in the rain-hit 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix as one of the defining performances of his career. But the reaction was not unanimous on what decided the race: The Guardian praised his control while also noting that a red flag brought him a useful tyre-change opportunity. Verstappen’s post-race jab at the absent British press then became a story of its own.
What British coverage made of Verstappen’s comeback
Verstappen qualified 12th but started 17th after a five-place grid penalty for taking a new power unit. In the wet race, he fought through the field to win; Lando Norris, who started from pole, finished sixth.
BBC Sport: a great wet-weather victory
BBC Sport’s Andrew Benson called the win one of Verstappen’s greatest and one of the greatest wet-weather victories. The report emphasized the difficult conditions, the climb from 17th and Norris’s sixth-place finish. It also framed the result as a pivotal moment in the championship battle. The Guardian: a masterclass, with an important caveat
The Guardian’s Giles Richards described the drive as peerless and a masterclass, and wrote that Norris’s title hopes had been shattered. His account did not treat the result as skill alone: it also acknowledged that the red flag helped Verstappen by allowing a tyre change without the usual pit-stop time loss. Norris had already pitted and complained that the interruption gave Verstappen that advantage. Those points qualify the praise; they do not erase the overtaking and control Richards admired. Sky Sports: an emotional win and a “masterclass”
Sky Sports highlighted Verstappen’s description of the victory as emotional. He said: “It’s definitely an emotional win. This morning I was very upset and my emotions have been going from left to right today.” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner called the drive “a masterclass” and said that in those conditions “the driver’s skill really comes to the fore.” Read Sky Sports’ post-race report.

Why the result changed the title narrative
BBC Sport reported after the race that Verstappen led Norris by 62 points, with 86 points still available across the final three races. Those are the standings and remaining points from the 2024 São Paulo race weekend, not current championship figures. The combination of Verstappen’s recovery from 17th and Norris’s sixth place gave British reports a clear reason to describe the result as a major blow to Norris’s title hopes.
Verstappen’s dig at the British press became a second story
At the post-race press conference, Verstappen asked: “I have a quick question. I mean, I appreciate all of you being here, but I don’t see any British press. Do they have to run to the airport, or they don’t know where the press conference is?” The joke landed after weeks of criticism of Verstappen’s driving by some former F1 drivers. The Guardian reported that Damon Hill had compared him to Dick Dastardly, Martin Brundle had said his legacy was being “tainted” after Mexico, and Johnny Herbert had called his driving “harsh” and “over the top.” Those were individual judgments, not a single shared position held by British media as a whole. Broadcasters pointed to schedules and conference format
Grandprix.com reported that F1TV broadcaster Will Buxton described Verstappen’s remark as a “cheeky post-race dig at UK press” and said broadcast journalists are often working in the paddock at that time. Sky commentator David Croft explained that he does not attend the post-race conference for written media, regardless of who won; he distinguished it from Thursday conferences attended by both broadcast and written media. Croft put it this way: “For my part, as it’s a press conference for written media only, I never attend, no matter who’s won.” These explanations describe the work patterns and format cited by those broadcasters; they do not establish why every British journalist was absent. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was the British reaction unanimous?
No. The prominent reports sampled here shared admiration for the scale of Verstappen’s comeback, but they did not all emphasize the same thing. BBC Sport foregrounded the drive and championship consequences; The Guardian paired its praise with the red-flag advantage; Sky Sports highlighted the emotion of the win and Horner’s assessment. Secondary coverage summarized other British papers through the effect on Norris’s title chances. This is a picture of prominent coverage, not evidence that every UK outlet or journalist agreed.
