BMW used carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in selected parts of the 2011 M3 CRT—not across the whole car. The most substantial application was a sandwich-constructed hood, with CFRP also used in the bucket-seat structures, rear spoiler and a front air-channeling element. BMW’s design targeted weight where it could reduce it while retaining the component’s intended function.
What was the BMW M3 CRT?
The M3 CRT was a road-registered special edition based on the M3 Sedan, announced by BMW on June 24, 2011. The initials stood for Carbon Racing Technology. BMW said it would build 67 cars, making the CRT a low-volume engineering exercise rather than a routine M3 trim or a car whose construction represented every BMW body panel.

Its engineering story is specific: BMW paired a new way of making CFRP components from recovered carbon-fiber thread with carefully chosen applications on the car. The hood, seat structures, rear spoiler and one front air-channeling component are the parts identified in BMW’s launch description. The release does not describe the entire body as carbon fiber, so it would be inaccurate to call the CRT an all-CFRP car.

That is the manufacturer’s claim at the time of launch, not a statement that the method remains unique today. The significance for the CRT is that BMW was connecting a small-run car to a process it intended to use in later body production, including for the i3 and i8.

How did BMW make the CRT’s CFRP parts?
BMW’s process began with carbon-fiber thread recovered from production offcuts. The thread could be woven into mats of different sizes, impregnated with synthetic resin and then hardened. BMW said offcuts from body production could be reprocessed as feedstock, rather than treating every component as if it had to start with newly produced fiber.
The key point is not simply that the material contained carbon fiber. BMW described a route from recovered thread to shaped mats and hardened components, allowing the material to be used in parts with different forms. The company’s release does not give a detailed factory recipe, curing temperature, cycle time or cost, so those specifics should not be inferred from its summary.
This process also provides context for the CRT’s low-volume role. BMW introduced the sedan in 2011 with 67 planned examples, while describing a manufacturing approach developed ahead of CFRP body production for later models. The launch announcement ties the CRT to that technical direction, but it does not establish that every CRT component was made from recycled offcuts or quantify the share of its carbon fiber that came from recovered production material.

How was the M3 CRT hood constructed?
The hood was the clearest example of BMW’s layered approach. It used two CFRP moldings enclosing an aramid honeycomb structure. Instead of being a single solid slab of carbon fiber, the component was a sandwich: outer molded layers around a lightweight core. The construction is important because a description such as “carbon-fiber hood” can leave the impression that the part was simply a thick, solid carbon shell.
BMW gave two different comparisons for the hood, and each has its own reference point. It said the CFRP hood had the strength of a conventional steel equivalent at roughly one-quarter the weight. Separately, BMW said the CRT hood weighed around 50 percent less than the standard M3 Sedan’s aluminum hood. The steel-equivalent comparison is not the same as the comparison with the production M3’s aluminum component.
| BMW’s hood comparison | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| CFRP hood versus a conventional steel equivalent | BMW said the CFRP version had the strength of the steel equivalent at roughly one-quarter its weight. | BMW’s 2011 comparison; the release does not provide a separate test method or absolute component weights. |
| CFRP hood versus the standard M3 Sedan’s aluminum hood | BMW said the CRT hood was around 50 percent lighter. | This is a separate comparison with the production Sedan’s aluminum hood, not the steel-equivalent comparison. |
The aramid honeycomb is part of the hood’s construction, but BMW’s release does not publish its dimensions, density or independent strength-test data. The supported takeaway is the design and BMW’s stated comparisons, not a claim that all CFRP parts—or any carbon-fiber panel in general—will achieve the same weight reduction.

Which other M3 CRT parts used CFRP?
Bucket-seat structures
The bucket-seat structures used layers of CFRP around a recycled-paper honeycomb. BMW also said conventionally produced carbon was added to visible areas. This makes the seat another sandwich construction, but with a different core material from the hood: recycled-paper honeycomb in the seat, aramid honeycomb in the hood.
The material description distinguishes structural construction from finish. The visible areas received conventionally produced carbon, while the seat’s layered structure wrapped a honeycomb core. BMW’s description does not say the entire seat was a solid carbon shell, nor does it provide a seat-by-seat weight saving.
Rear spoiler and front air-channeling element
BMW also identified CFRP in the rear spoiler and an air-channeling element integrated into the front fascia. The release names these components but does not give their individual weights or quantify how much they contributed to the car’s total mass reduction. They show that the material’s use extended beyond the hood and seats, while remaining confined to specified parts.

How much lighter was the M3 CRT?
BMW reported a DIN unladen weight of 1,580 kg. In its launch material, the company described that as around 45 kg below the standard M3 Sedan. It also gave an around-70-kg difference when equipment was accounted for. These figures use different comparison bases; the 70-kg figure is not an alternative statement of the car’s DIN unladen-weight gap.
| Figure | BMW’s stated context |
|---|---|
| 1,580 kg | M3 CRT DIN unladen weight, as reported by BMW in 2011. |
| Around 45 kg less | BMW’s comparison with the standard M3 Sedan on the DIN unladen-weight basis. |
| Around 70 kg less | BMW’s comparison when equipment is accounted for. |
| 3.5 kg per horsepower | BMW’s stated weight-to-power ratio for the CRT. |
The overall difference should not be attributed to the CFRP hood alone. BMW gives a vehicle-level mass comparison as well as separate material claims for particular parts, but the cited launch figures do not break down every kilogram by component or identify how much of the total reduction came from CFRP. The equipment-adjusted comparison is useful precisely because a vehicle’s mass comparison can change when equipment content is taken into account.
How did the weight relate to performance?
BMW listed maximum output at 331 kW, or 450 hp, and claimed a 0–100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds. It also stated a weight-to-power ratio of 3.5 kg per horsepower. These are manufacturer specifications from the June 2011 launch, not independently measured results in the material cited here.

The figures place the CFRP work in the context of a performance sedan: BMW combined the CRT’s stated output with a lower vehicle mass than the standard M3 Sedan. They do not show that CFRP alone produced the acceleration figure, or allow a reader to isolate the effect of the hood, seats or spoiler from the rest of the vehicle’s engineering.
| Launch specification | BMW’s 2011 figure |
|---|---|
| Maximum output | 331 kW / 450 hp |
| 0–100 km/h acceleration | 4.4 seconds, claimed by BMW |
| Weight-to-power ratio | 3.5 kg per horsepower, as stated by BMW |
Where was the M3 CRT sold?
BMW said in its 2011 U.S. launch release that the United States would not receive homologation for sale because the worldwide production volume was very limited. That is a statement about U.S. homologation at launch. It should not be broadened into a claim about the CRT’s legality in every country, later import rules or a car’s registration status today.
The 67-unit planned production run helps explain why BMW described the CRT as a special edition, but low production does not itself establish current availability, condition or value. BMW M’s April 2026 retrospective reported that one CRT sold at an RM Sotheby’s Munich auction in summer 2025 for nearly €260,000. That is one historical auction result, not a current appraisal, typical price or promise of what another example would sell for.

What the M3 CRT demonstrates about BMW’s use of CFRP
The CRT is best understood as a targeted material application. BMW described a process that could turn recovered carbon-fiber thread into hardened CFRP mats, then showed how the resulting material could be used in specific components. The hood and seat structures were not described as uniform solid carbon pieces: both used outer material around honeycomb cores, with different core materials in each application.
That detail matters when interpreting the car’s weight claims. BMW gave a steel-equivalent comparison and a standard Sedan aluminum-hood comparison, plus vehicle-level weight figures on two different bases. Keeping those distinctions intact makes the engineering case clearer: the CRT illustrates where BMW used CFRP and what the manufacturer said about those parts, without turning the car into evidence for broader claims about every carbon-fiber component or every BMW model.
