The rules then permitted a purpose-built racing engine if a limited number of corresponding road cars were produced. BMW’s approach was a bold interpretation of the homologation rules—not, on the available evidence, proof of cheating.
Why BMW built a V8 M3 GTR
The E46-generation M3 entered a competitive US GT environment where BMW judged the regular M3’s straight-six insufficient for the job. BMW M says its motorsport engineers developed a compact, lightweight V8 for the task. For the 2001 season, the M3 GTR used a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre P60 V8, rather than the straight-six found in the regular road car. BMW M’s history of the Strassenversion explains the engine choice and the car’s racing role.
How the homologation loophole worked
The sticking point was that the P60 V8 was not an engine offered in a series-production M3. BMW M says that, strictly speaking, this made the race car a prototype that did not meet the ALMS GT homologation rules. But the 2001 rules allowed a specialized racing engine if a small number of corresponding road cars were built. BMW created the M3 GTR Strassenversion as that roadgoing counterpart.
That is the substance behind the “loophole” description: BMW used the rule’s limited-production provision to homologate a race car with a bespoke engine. The term describes a contentious interpretation and advantage within the rules; it does not by itself establish that BMW broke them.

Race car and Strassenversion: what differed

The output figures are source-specific rather than a settled single road-car rating: BMW Group PressClub’s 2015 account gives 380 hp for the road version, while BMW M’s 2021 history gives 350 hp. The same PressClub release states 444 hp for the race engine. Those ratings should not be blended or treated as directly interchangeable.
BMW’s 2001 ALMS campaign
BMW’s US PressClub says BMW Team PTG and BMW Team Schnitzer began campaigning the M3 GTR from the third event of the eight-race ALMS season. The teams combined to win the final six races in a row, according to the company’s 2015 retrospective.

BMW M’s 2021 history describes a different result: first and third places in seven of ten ALMS GT races. That is not the same statistic as six consecutive wins, so the two accounts are best kept distinct. Both describe a highly successful season that put pressure on BMW’s rivals, including Porsche.
Why the rules changed for 2002
The small homologation run and the M3 GTR’s success drew a response from competitors and prompted a stricter production requirement. BMW M says the minimum rose from ten homologation models to 100 for 2002. BMW Group PressClub describes the change as a 100-fold expansion and says a comparable BMW effort became economically impossible.

The North American M3 GTR program ended after the 2001 season. BMW says the car continued in European competition, including the Nürburgring 24 Hours. BMW M sums up the US withdrawal this way: “Thus, the withdrawal of the BMW M3 GTR was sealed – after just one very successful season in US motorsport.”

BMW’s own accounts do not establish one uncontested total. BMW Group PressClub’s 2015 release says six cars were completed: three production-level examples that remain in the BMW Group Classic collection and three engineering development cars that were later recycled. BMW M’s 2021 history instead says ten road-legal cars were produced, while noting uncertainty about their locations and whether owners licensed them for road use.

Those descriptions differ in both the total and what they count. The safest conclusion is that BMW built a very small roadgoing run to support homologation; the cited official accounts should not be collapsed into a definitive count of cars produced, surviving or sold.
