Return the undamaged tool within 90 days and AutoZone says you’ll receive a full refund; keep it and the deposit becomes the purchase price. You can arrange a loan in a store or order online, but check the exact tool’s availability and return instructions before you rely on either route.
How does AutoZone Loan-A-Tool work?
- Choose a tool. AutoZone’s current program page lists nearly 100 specialty tools, including options for engine maintenance, air conditioning, pullers, and fuel systems.
- Arrange the loan. In a store, ask an AutoZoner for the tool and pay a deposit covering its purchase price. For an online loan, AutoZone says to order the tool like a regular purchase.
- Use and return it. AutoZone’s stated return window is up to 90 days. Return the tool undamaged within that period to receive a full refund of the deposit.
- Keep it if you want to own it. If you decide not to return the tool, the deposit becomes the purchase price.

How long can you keep a Loan-A-Tool, and do you get the deposit back?
AutoZone says you can keep the tool for up to 90 days. It says an undamaged tool returned within that window qualifies for a full refund. The deposit amount is tied to the tool’s purchase price, but the program page does not state a universal dollar amount; confirm the deposit for the specific tool when arranging the loan.
How do you return an AutoZone loaner tool?
AutoZone describes two return routes: drop the tool off at an AutoZone store, or, for an online order, ship it back using the return form. The program page says a store return can be made at any AutoZone location. If you plan to mail it, check the current form for the order’s packaging and shipping directions before sending it.

What tools are available through Loan-A-Tool?
AutoZone’s current page describes the selection as “almost 100 tools.” Examples include:
- Oxygen-sensor socket sets and serpentine-belt tools
- Compression testers and fuel-pressure test kits
- A/C manifold gauge sets, vacuum pumps, and A/C clutch-holding tools
- Power-steering pulley remover/installer kits
- Slide hammers and harmonic-balancer puller kits
- Fuel-pump replacement kits and fuel-injector puller kits
AutoZone’s Loan-A-Tool program video also gives a 23-piece ball-joint set as an example. The current selection and stock at a particular store can differ, so use the examples as a guide rather than an inventory promise.

How can you check whether your AutoZone has the tool?
Tool selection across the program is not the same as live inventory at your local store. AutoZone’s video advises customers to check with their local store for the needed tool; it also says a store may request one if it is not in stock. That does not establish a specific restock time or guarantee that a particular location can obtain it.
Before you travel or place an order, confirm the exact tool, its availability, and the deposit with AutoZone. Check that the tool fits your vehicle and repair job: the sources do not provide a comprehensive vehicle-compatibility matrix.

Should you borrow or buy the tool?
Loan-A-Tool is most relevant when a repair requires a specialty tool you expect to use infrequently. Buying may be more practical if you anticipate repeat jobs or need the tool on your own schedule. AutoZone itself points customers unsure about owning a tool toward the program on its Tools and Equipment page.
Make the decision by weighing these factors:
- Frequency: How often are you likely to need the tool?
- Cost: What is the tool’s purchase price, and what deposit will the store or online order require?
- Availability: Can you get the right tool when your repair schedule requires it?
- Fit: Is it suitable for your vehicle and the specific job?
- Return logistics: Can you return it undamaged within the 90-day window, and is the in-store or mail route workable for you?
There is no published comparative savings study establishing that borrowing is always cheaper than buying. The practical value depends on the tool’s price, how often you will use it, and whether the loan and return arrangements suit your repair.
