AUTOSAR supports safety- and security-related automotive software by standardizing interfaces, platform services and implementation requirements—not by certifying a vehicle or guaranteeing that its software is secure. Classic and Adaptive address different ECU needs; their mechanisms can help teams build and integrate protections, but the finished vehicle still needs a project-specific safety case and cybersecurity design.
What AUTOSAR standardizes—and what it does not
AUTOSAR is a shared automotive software architecture and methodology. Its standards define basic system functions and functional interfaces so software components and electronic control units (ECUs) can be integrated across organizations and platforms. They do not prescribe every application’s internal algorithm.
That common structure can support reuse and portability, but it does not make components interchangeable without engineering work. Teams still need to validate integrations and account for project-specific configuration, hardware, calibration and requirements.
How Classic and Adaptive differ
Both platforms are part of the AUTOSAR ecosystem, but they organize software for different ECU and deployment needs.

AUTOSAR Foundation supplies common requirements and technical specifications intended to support interoperability between Classic and Adaptive, as well as compatibility with non-AUTOSAR platforms. The methodology describes how components and ECUs are configured and integrated; the architecture alone does not remove the need to validate each implementation.
How AUTOSAR supports functional safety
AUTOSAR safety requirements reference ISO 26262 and cover mechanisms that implementation teams can use to address safety-related behavior. The R24-11 safety requirements include requirements concerning configuration over the driving cycle, updates or upgrades across applications of mixed criticality, safe information exchange, corruption detection, safe initialization and verification. Earlier requirements material also describes monitoring control flow and managing execution order for applications with mixed safety criticality.

These are platform requirements and support mechanisms, not a shortcut to a completed safety case. Having an AUTOSAR module or requirement in a design does not prove that a particular implementation satisfies it, that the vehicle is ISO 26262 compliant, or that it has been certified. The R24-11 extract marks some requirements as draft, so their status must be checked in the applicable release when a project relies on a specific requirement.
What AUTOSAR security mechanisms cover
SecOC: authentication and integrity for onboard messages
Secure Onboard Communication (SecOC) is specified for resource-efficient authentication of critical data at the protocol data unit (PDU) level. Integrated into the communication stack, it uses cryptographic services through the Crypto Service Manager. Key and counter management can interact through the RTE.

The specification treats symmetric message authentication codes as a common compact approach while allowing abstraction for asymmetric approaches. SecOC helps a receiving component check the authenticity and integrity of covered onboard data. It is not encryption, and it does not by itself secure every message, ECU or external connection in a vehicle.
Broader platform security services
AUTOSAR’s security work spans more than PDU authentication. Its examples include secure communication between platforms, secure time synchronization, cryptographic APIs, key management and certificate handling, event logging, and secure diagnostics. These capabilities provide building blocks; a vehicle’s cybersecurity posture depends on how they are selected, configured, maintained and integrated with the rest of the system.

How does AUTOSAR ensure secure identity and data integrity when vehicles connect to shared cloud platforms?
AUTOSAR’s event Q&A points to TCP with TLS or to IPsec for secure vehicle-to-cloud communication. These are communication protections whose identity and integrity properties depend on the deployment’s configuration and credential or key management; AUTOSAR does not define the security of every cloud service that a vehicle may use. In particular, AUTOSAR says storage of data inside the cloud is outside its scope.
SecOC should not be mistaken for the cloud connection mechanism: it addresses authentication and integrity at the onboard PDU level. A complete vehicle-to-cloud design therefore has to consider the in-vehicle communication protections, the external connection, endpoint identities and credentials, and the cloud provider’s handling and storage of data.

What the recent implementation milestone means
On August 20, 2026, AUTOSAR announced CAPI 1.0 as its first common implementation of the Adaptive Platform, including source code and code generators. AUTOSAR says the source is accessible to its partners. The CAPI page describes the implementation as designed for ISO 26262 functional safety and ISO/SAE 21434 cybersecurity; that is AUTOSAR’s positioning, not a certification-body finding. Source access and licensing conditions are tied to the partner context, so they should be confirmed with AUTOSAR before relying on them.
What AUTOSAR adoption does—and does not—demonstrate
At its 2024 R24-11 release event, AUTOSAR reported approximately 2,400 incorporation tasks and more than 1,700 change requests, with more than 200 partners across 20 working groups. It also reported over 350,000 lines of Adaptive Platform code and nine new concepts. Those are measures of ecosystem and release activity, not evidence that adoption has reduced crashes or vulnerabilities, improved software quality, or shortened certification time.
AUTOSAR’s homepage attributes this statement to Günter Reichart, Former AUTOSAR Spokesperson: “If a company does it alone it is one proprietary solution. If it is shared and used by several partners it becomes technology, and with broad application it becomes state of the art and alleviates certification.” It is an industry spokesperson’s view, not a regulator’s or certification authority’s determination.
AUTOSAR also states that released platform files are provided for informational use and commercial exploitation of its intellectual property requires a license. That makes partnership and licensing relevant to organizations implementing the standards, but it does not change the distinction between platform support and proof of a vehicle’s safety or cybersecurity.
