Autonomous yard trucks do not usually take instructions directly from a warehouse management system (WMS) and operate independently from there. They work as part of a connected operation: warehouse, transport and yard systems provide shipment and facility context; a fleet or operations-control layer assigns and tracks moves; and the truck’s onboard systems carry them out. Status updates and facility events can then inform what happens next. The exact interfaces and workflow differ by deployment—there is no single truck-to-WMS connection that applies everywhere.
What “integration” means in a yard operation
A warehouse system and an autonomous truck have different jobs. A WMS may know that goods are ready to move, while a transportation management system (TMS) may hold appointment or carrier information. Neither fact alone tells a particular truck whether it is available, eligible for a task or clear to move through a specific part of a facility. Integration connects those kinds of operational context without making every system responsible for every decision.

In practical terms, integration means that systems exchange data or events that let work progress across organizational boundaries. One system may create or expose a move; another may assign it to a vehicle; the vehicle-control system may report its state; and gate, dock or yard systems may record events that affect the next step. Depending on the installation, this exchange can use APIs, webhooks, connectors or file-based methods. The presence of an interface does not, by itself, mean that all systems share one live database or use a common message format.
The four layers and their responsibilities
It helps to separate the operation into four functional layers. A particular site may combine some of them in one product, but the responsibilities still need to be clear.

Warehouse, transport and yard applications
WMS and TMS applications provide business and execution context: for example, an order, shipment, appointment or transport task. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) and yard-management systems may also provide information or receive updates. Kaleris describes yard truck, rail and shuttle management that includes assigning, prioritizing and confirming move tasks, with web-API integration to WMS, TMS and ERP. This illustrates that yard work may be coordinated alongside warehouse and transport workflows; it does not establish one standard division of duties for every site.
Fleet or operations control
The fleet-control layer organizes work across vehicles. It can receive or expose tasks, allocate work to eligible vehicles, track operational state and coordinate with other site or port systems. CAYT describes its fleet-management system as an “operation control system” that supports and manages its autonomous yard trucks and integrates with other port systems. This is distinct from the vehicle’s own sensing and control: fleet coordination decides how work is organized across the operation, while onboard control executes movement.
Vehicle and onboard control
The truck must sense and respond to its surroundings while performing a movement task. CAYT identifies sensor fusion and vehicle-control algorithms as elements of its system, alongside the truck and fleet-management system. A task coming from a warehouse workflow therefore should not be read as a route command or proof that a path is available. The vehicle-control layer and site design determine how a movement is carried out under the conditions of that deployment.

Gates, docks, restraints, cameras, sensors and human operators contribute events or decisions that can change workflow status. For instance, a check-in or dock assignment can inform warehouse work, while a restraint-related signal may be used as a condition in a yard-movement workflow. These are examples of signals that systems can exchange—not a guarantee that one event alone establishes every condition needed for a safe move.

How a move can pass from warehouse work to a truck
The following sequence is a conceptual example built from documented product capabilities. It is not a universal operating procedure: the sequence, decision points and responsible system must be set for the actual facility.
- Work becomes relevant. A warehouse, transport or yard application makes a shipment, appointment or requested move available to the operation. The event might be associated with an arriving trailer, warehouse work or a planned repositioning task.
- Operational context is checked. The fleet or yard-control layer receives enough information to evaluate the requested work. The needed context can include task priority and the vehicle or trailer involved, but the exact required fields depend on the product and integration.
- A task is assigned. Fleet control assigns the move to a vehicle considered eligible under the configured operation. A yard-management product may also support prioritizing and confirming tasks. A WMS request should not be treated as a direct instruction to a specific truck unless the installation explicitly defines that behavior.
- The vehicle performs the movement. The truck’s onboard systems carry out the assigned work using their own sensing and control. Facility conditions, local procedures and safety systems remain relevant while the move is underway.
- Progress and outcome are recorded. The operation can update task status as work starts, completes or encounters an exception. The update may be made available to warehouse, transport or yard applications so that later work can be coordinated.
- Facility events affect the next action. A check-in, dock assignment, loading-complete event, departure-ready status or exception may inform whether work can proceed, must wait or needs attention. Which event has that effect is a site-specific workflow decision.
For example, myQ describes check-in and dock assignment being sent into WMS workflows, as well as a dock-restraint release event triggering a yard-movement workflow. That describes a possible connection between facility events and downstream work; it does not mean every deployment should automatically release a truck whenever one particular message arrives.
What data and events may be exchanged
Integration is easier to reason about when a site distinguishes a task from an event. A task asks for work to be done; an event reports that something happened or changed. Systems may exchange both, but the same word—such as “ready”—can have different meanings unless the interface contract defines it precisely.

| Bookings and appointment context | Relate an expected arrival or planned activity to gate, yard or warehouse workflows. | YARDtwin documents API coverage for bookings and related gate and yard functions; the exact fields and downstream action are deployment-specific. |
| Gate check-in | Record that a vehicle or trailer has arrived and make that status available to connected workflows. | YARDtwin lists gate check-in events. myQ describes check-in information feeding WMS workflows. Neither description establishes a universal check-in message. |
| Move task, priority and confirmation | Represent requested yard work, order competing tasks and record whether a move is confirmed. | Kaleris describes task assignment, prioritization and confirmation. Its public description does not establish a shared schema used across vendors. |
| Dock assignment and warehouse work | Associate a trailer or move with a dock and reflect when dock work starts or completes. | myQ describes dock assignment being sent to WMS workflows; YARDtwin lists warehouse work started and completed at the dock. |
| Restraint or dock-safety signal | Inform workflow logic about a facility condition before a related yard action. | myQ describes restraint disengagement as a yard-workflow trigger; YARDtwin documents dock safety warnings from sensors, including a door-opening example when a vehicle restraint is not engaged. These are product examples, not a complete safety case. |
| Departure readiness | Make a departure-related status available to yard or transport workflows. | YARDtwin lists departure-readiness events; the source does not define a universal meaning or say which system must approve departure. |
| Task completion or exception | Close a move or route unresolved work for review. | YARDtwin lists yard-task creation, completion and exception events. Local procedures must specify who or what handles each exception. |
The important design question is not simply whether a vendor says it supports a “WMS integration.” Ask which objects and events are included, which direction they travel, and what operational outcome each one is allowed to trigger.

Connection methods differ by system and facility
Several interface patterns appear in vendor materials, but they are implementation options rather than a common autonomous-truck standard.
- REST APIs: YARDtwin describes JSON over HTTPS REST APIs covering bookings, gate, yard, dock, trailers, seals, departures and reporting. Kaleris describes web-API integration with WMS, TMS and ERP. An API can support application-to-application exchange, but its existence does not establish which fields, update frequency or error behavior are included.
- Webhooks: YARDtwin documents signed event webhooks. Webhooks can deliver notifications when events occur; the receiving application still needs to interpret the event and decide what, if anything, to do next.
- Custom connectors: myQ lists REST APIs and custom connectors for WMS integration. A connector may bridge different systems, but the supported platforms and any site-specific configuration should be confirmed directly.
- Files and EDI-compatible paths: myQ also lists sFTP, bulk import and EDI-compatible formats for ERP or legacy systems. These approaches may suit systems that do not exchange events through the same API pattern, but the source does not specify transfer cadence or processing guarantees.
- Other workflow connections: myQ describes appointment data and notifications for TMS or carrier systems and event-triggered workflows for warehouse execution systems (WES) and automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). These are examples of facility integration paths, not required components of every yard-truck deployment.
Before treating two systems as interoperable, establish what is supported in the relevant product edition and site configuration. A protocol name such as REST or EDI says how systems may exchange information at a broad level; it does not prove that a specific yard truck, WMS and facility system already agree on message definitions or workflow behavior.
Decide which system owns each operational fact
When the same status appears in multiple systems, teams need an agreed source of truth. Otherwise, a facility can show conflicting answers to basic questions: Has the trailer arrived? Is it assigned to a dock? Is the move complete? Can it depart? Integration planning should name an authoritative owner for each important record or decision, and specify which systems receive a copy or update.
- Work request: Identify which application creates the requested move and which can change or cancel it.
- Trailer location: Define which yard or vehicle system records the current location and how other applications consume it.
- Task state: Agree on the meanings of assigned, accepted, started, completed, blocked and exception states. Do not assume that identically named statuses mean the same thing in different products.
- Readiness and authorization: Separate a status that reports a condition from an approval that permits an action. For example, a dock event may be informative without being sufficient authorization to move.
- Correction and audit: Decide how an incorrect or late update is corrected, and how the operation can see what changed and when.
This ownership map is a practical integration requirement, not a capability established for any one vendor by the product descriptions cited here. It should be resolved with the teams responsible for warehouse, yard, vehicle, dock and IT operations before live tasks depend on exchanged statuses.

Plan for delayed, duplicated or missing updates
API and event connections do not remove the possibility of communication or workflow problems. The available vendor descriptions do not establish how every named product handles retries, duplicate notifications, events arriving out of order, connectivity loss or manual overrides. Those cases therefore need explicit answers in a deployment plan rather than assumptions based on an integration label.
Define what happens when a message is late or absent
For each event that can affect work, decide what the operation does if the expected update does not arrive. A task may need to remain pending, be checked in another system or be escalated to a person. The response should be appropriate to the consequence of acting without the update; do not silently interpret silence as approval.
Make repeated events safe to handle
Ask whether an event can be delivered more than once and how the receiving workflow recognizes that it has already processed the same occurrence. Also clarify what happens when two events conflict or arrive in an unexpected order. The sources establish that APIs and signed webhooks are offered in some examples, but they do not publish a common delivery or deduplication guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProvide an operational path for exceptions
A rejected task, blocked movement, sensor warning or inconsistent status needs an owner and a next action. Decide who sees it, how it is acknowledged, whether the task is held or reassigned, and how the systems are brought back into agreement. A manual override should be visible to affected operators and should not leave connected applications treating stale status as current.

Integration is not a substitute for a safety case
Systems can use facility signals to coordinate work, but connecting a restraint sensor, dock system or warehouse workflow to a truck does not by itself demonstrate that the complete operation is safe. CAYT identifies sensor fusion, vehicle-control algorithms and V2X digital infrastructure as parts of its system. myQ describes a restraint-disengagement event as a signal in a yard workflow, while YARDtwin documents sensor-based dock warnings. These are vendor descriptions and examples, not independent safety certification or a full account of how a site should manage hazards.
Before operation, the facility needs site-specific engineering and operating procedures, including the role of people and facility equipment in relevant workflows. Operators should verify which signals are safety-related, what conditions they actually represent, what happens if a signal is unavailable or contradictory, and how the operation is handled under the applicable jurisdictional requirements. An integration event should not be described as proof that a movement is safe unless the deployment’s engineering and safety process establishes that conclusion.
How to evaluate a proposed deployment
Use the following questions to compare architectures and scope an implementation. They focus on fit and operational responsibility rather than ranking products.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Clarify the system’s role. Is it controlling autonomous vehicles, managing yard tasks, connecting dock or gate events to warehouse workflows, or doing more than one of these jobs?
- Inventory the systems already in use. List the WMS, TMS, ERP, yard-management, WES, gate, dock and vehicle-control systems involved. Ask which exact products and configurations have supported connections and which would need custom work.
- Map data and event coverage. For each move, identify the information needed to create it, assign it, track it, complete it and handle an exception. Confirm whether each item is available through a documented interface and in which direction it moves.
- Set ownership and authority. Document which system controls each work order, location, status and approval. Specify whether an event is informational, a workflow trigger or authorization to proceed.
- Walk through real operating cases. Test the intended logic for arrival, dock assignment, release, departure and exceptions. Include a human review or intervention path where the operation requires one.
- Verify failure handling. Get explicit answers on retries, duplicate and out-of-order events, connectivity loss, stale status, manual overrides and recovery. The vendor materials summarized here do not establish that any particular system meets a site’s requirements for these cases.
- Validate the complete site workflow. Include warehouse, transport, yard, IT, vehicle and facility stakeholders. Confirm that integration behavior matches local procedures and the safety engineering for the actual site.
A product that exposes an API may still require mapping, workflow configuration or custom integration. Conversely, a file-based or connector-based path may be viable for a system that does not use the same interface pattern as the truck-control layer. The relevant comparison is whether the complete workflow works with clear ownership and recoverable failure handling—not whether every component advertises the same protocol.
What the available product descriptions establish—and what they do not
Vendor materials show examples of the roles and connections involved: CAYT describes an autonomous container-transport system combining an autonomous yard truck and an integrated operations system, with fleet control connected to port systems; Kaleris describes task assignment, prioritization and confirmation alongside WMS, TMS and ERP web-API integration; myQ describes facility events feeding warehouse and yard workflows; and YARDtwin documents REST APIs and signed webhooks for yard, dock and related events.
Those descriptions establish examples of product capabilities, not independent proof of performance or compatibility at a particular facility. They do not establish a universal architecture, common message schema, standardized truck-to-WMS interface, or a comparative productivity, cost or safety result. A site should verify current product availability, interface scope and deployment behavior with the relevant suppliers and its own integration and safety teams.
